Pizzagirl, the trend now seems to be to layer a number of pieces together. I have taken to wearing the smaller dainty pieces (like your diamond) with other short but chunkier beaded necklaces. Mostly Silpada, which I have a lot of because SIL sells it.

OK, I need a pic here, I never thought of really mixing my “good” diamond drop with costume jewelry. Help!

Gourmetmom, yes, I remember watching her matches on TV and seeing flashes of a diamond covered bracelet. Tennis bracelets were all the rage then.

PG, maybe you could have the diamond re-set into a ring with another stone (emeralds, sapphires, or rubies) in the same size and shape placed on each side of the diamond.
Like this - but with the diamond in the middle flanked by the other stones.

That’s very pretty, TutuTaxi - I’m still looking to maintain it as a necklace, but I appreciate your suggestion!

Pizzagirl, would you consider an enhancer for your diamond solitaire necklace? A slider like this one:

I happily avoided the whole diamond thing and went for a sapphire solitaire on a platinum band. I get lots of compliments on it but I mostly like having something different. We designed our rings together and shopped for the sapphire (which turned out to be more difficult than selecting a diamond).

That’s exactly what my diamond necklace looks like–I had it made from a ring I inherited from my grandmother and I wear it almost all the time. I think it’s classic, and if it screams “aging forty-something”, that makes this “just-turned sixty” look terribly youthful!

PG - You could add other small charms to the necklace, keeping the diamond in the middle. How long is the chain? If it is past the collarbone, it probably does look dated. A shorter necklace that stops right at the collarbone is more contemporary.

Gourmetmom - that is exactly what stepdaughter did when her grandfather gave her a solitaire pendant with her grandmother’s diamond. Her diamond is in a bezel setting, which looks a little more contemporary, and she wears it with a small disc charm with her initial.

Here is one possibility. Mena Suvari (on the left) is wearing 3 necklaces, including a small one with a charm: [Max and Chloe Blog - Jewelry and Fashion Accessories](http://www.maxandchloe.com/blog/tag/sarah-jessica-parker/)

This is more like what I often do, which might work with the solitaire (near the bottom): [gifts ? The Pleated Poppy](http://thepleatedpoppy.com/category/gifts/)

Re gold jewelry possibly coming back into height-of-fashion status: the NY Times report that on the recent Fashion’s Night Out, one of the windows of Tiffany’s had a live model painted gold, wearing all gold jewelry. (What goes around, comes around…)
