Weeder classes

haha that’s nice
we should have a collection of CC’s FAQs or something

yeah boelterhall made a thread (or at least i think it was him) several weeks or months ago. we’ll probably have a new “Current BRUINS to take questions!!” thread for the incoming class. =]

some faqs i see are:
socal mentality
minimum senior year gpa
holistic admissions
how to calculate uc gpa

I am really scared of weeders, please comfort me?

honestly, there’s weeder classes at every university… there’s just no way to get around them. so, with that, just don’t worry about it too much and study hard.

Hahaha… it’s pretty amusing actually… the passage that I cited. From my experience, it is not as bad as the person I quoted above makes it. (Perhaps I’ve just been lucky so far? I am aware that it gets worse as one progresses and the ‘weaker’ students get weeded out.) I went to a pretty crappy high school and I was getting ready to get screwed over for being poorly prepared. It has been OK so far.

As long as you keep up in your work and keep up in your courses and get help when you need it, you should be fine. No one will be breathing down your neck, reciting whatever they had learned the night before to freak you out and no one will be ripping out pages from textbooks or other sources. It is not intense, from my experience, until you realize what the class averages are. Wahahaha! :stuck_out_tongue:

My favorite line is this one:

dont take more than two weeders a quarter. if you do, your gpa will die a slow and painful death

I think it would be a good idea to enroll in four classes at the beginning. Suppose you wanted to take the first chemistry class of its series and one of the life sciences courses (where the latter is considered to be significantly weeder where the former just depends a bit). It would be wise to take two other easy GEs (general education courses or core requirements) along with this or a combo of a GE and something like English composition 3 or whatever so that you can decide to take the two “weeders” and the easy GE or just go along with the easy GE and writing class and the one “weeder” course. There is no penalty or charge or whatever for dropping a course (in the early stage of the quarter) or for having 4 courses. This makes shopping for courses slightly easier after getting an idea of how difficult it would be to manage courses… or heck keep all 4 if you feel like you can do it. Sure, you might invest more work at the beginning of the quarter but it might be worth it if there is any uncertainty.

“dont take more than two weeders a quarter. if you do, your gpa will die a slow and painful death”

yet this doesnt stop people i know from taking 4 science classes

Yes, they’re called engineers!

or extremely ambitious pre-meds
