Weight Loss for Dummies

Page 3… How’s everyone doing? Hope you are still in love with your veggies and healthy proteins… :)

Well, Bunsen Burner. I was more in love with my ash-roasted eggplant last night until I poured in a can of diced tomatoes only to learn that the can was bad. :(

And to top that off, I was smited a good one by my Theraband, which I’d stretched over the top of a door to do pulldowns on; something that has worked just fine up until now. This time, while the band was at maximum extension, it came off the door and smote me across the top of the bra area. Ouch. And when the t-shirt came off, I have a lovely welt the entire way across. Which is still visible this morning.

Long way around of asking: I need something to wedge in a closed door that has a biggish loop through which I can thread either a Theraband or a stretchy tube with handles for my exercises. Any suggestions? (I already own all the bands and tubes I think I want for the moment, but I wish not to be smote again. Ever.)

Week two of returning to RW.

Did three miles yesterday, two today. Rest day tomorrow. I feel great, but I am determined to gradually add distance and frequency.

I do love my veggies!

I have a pot of White Bean Soup on the stove:

1 large onion chopped
2 large carrots chopped
1 rib of celery chopped
a little garlic
1 box low sodium Pacific brand veggie broth
1 can fire roasted chopped tomatoes
thyme
summer savory
rosemary
bay leaf
can of navy bean, rinsed and drained.

Saute the veggies until celery and onions are translucent. Add tomatoes, broth and spices. Simmer for a couple of hours. Remove the bay leaf, add navy beans. Simmer a little longer, use immersion blender until it is at desired consistency. I like a few beans that are still whole.

If I had planned I would have used dried beans, but hey, I’m not perfect!

arabrab, I’m sorry, but I am laughing so hard at the image of you being "smote’ - “smitten?” - by your theraband! And I love the fact that you used the word, “smote,” twice!

worknprogress, I make several versions of that soup these days, often using fire-roasted tomatoes. Basically, I saute some chopped vegetables, the more the better, add canned tomatoes, vegetable broth, lentils or canned beans, spices, cook, puree with immersion blender. It’s so satisfying, and both kids love it.

arabrab,
Would a towel hook screwed into the upper portion of the door work for your band so there won’t be any more “smoting”?

The max HR goes down a little with age, supposedly, but not dramatically. Mine doesn’t seem to have dropped much at all, since I’ve hit close to it at the end of some races and my last real max test was many years ago. Again, the max HR isn’t the fitness measurement- it’s just a number unique to you.

I’m not sure a towel rack would be strong enough, but I’ll take a look. Thanks for the idea.

Are you all paying for WW, or do you just know the plan and follow it that way?

Am trying to lose weight, but it has been a lifelong battle. PCOS, plus chemo and other essential meds that tend to put on the lbs have been obstacles. Am also a carbo addict, though my impetus to eat is curbed by watching DH eat with abandon. That, and my mom is totally bedridden after falling and breaking her femur at age 64. It never healed.

Did Curves for a while, but I keep on messing up knees and shoulders. (One of the long term side effects of my chemo drug is connective tissue and joint problems.) Am considering switching to a local gym to bike and treadmill. Fatigue is also a huge issue; I work 20 hrs a week and that is all this bod can handle. Kick it up to 25 and I am taking 5 hour naps on my days off and the weekends.

OTOH, I have lost 22 since April just by eating healthier. (Even my boss noticed today, and he is CLUELESS!) Have far to go, though I would be happy with another 60, which would not render me thin, but a lot healthier.

DH and I plan to go to Israel next spring and I want to hike Masada.

CountingDown: What made a huge difference for me about a year ago was reading the book "Why We Get Fat’ (or something similar) by Gary Taubes. It explains why for some people at least it is virtually impossible to lose weight eating carbs. It helped motivate me to think that perhaps I needed to do something different (eliminate carbs as much as possible), rather than to try harder at what I had been doing (low-fat). I have lost about 25 pounds in the last year (and would like to lose 10 more, but if I don’t, I am at a weight I can live with). And I have not struggled with being physically hungry the past year. If I slip a little, those carb cravings do come back, but at least I know what to do now.

I’m a lifetime member of Weight Watchers. I pay for their etools…it’s $12.99 a month (it’s that much for each meeting). I can used these etools on my IPad for tracking food, finding info about the diet, getting recipes, tracking weight and activities, etc. I figured I’d try doing it without going to the meetings (which I truthfully do NOT enjoy…when you only have 10 pounds to lose, everyone looks at you funny when you walk in the room). I weigh in once a week using my own scale here at home.

Tomorrow is “weigh in day”…stay tuned.

I will say, because I’m a lifetime member, clearly I’ve been to PLENTY of meetings in my life and I have a clear idea of how to follow this diet (the new one is very similar to the past one…with the online calculator, I have no trouble figuring out my “points”).

My understanding is you can do WW online, but truthfully I think if you haven’t ever done the program before, you should do the meetings (and NO I don’t work for them).

Well, upon awakening this morning to the sound of torrential rain outside, I proceeded to have a lively debate in my head about whether to get up in the dark and go to the gym for the free group training session at 6 am. Finally the good beat down the evil and I went. It was great! Four of us including the trainer. She had us doing circuits of weights, squats, treadmill, etc. I’m sure I will need a walker tomorrow to get around!

Aren’t you the determined little exerciser! Good going!

Good for you, EPTR! I’m impressed.

Countingdown, welcome to the thread. Like others here, I have been able to lose weight easily by limiting carbs. I reduce “bad” carbs as much as possible and limit good carbs to around 50% of calories. Some people on the other thread eat only 30% of calories as carbs, but I don’t feel right if I go that low. I eat more protein than I used to and many more vegetables. I don’t restrict fat as much as I used to, but I don’t go crazy, either. I try to stick to “good” fats like olive oil.

I used to do WW online, but find the free tracker on LiveStrong much more helpful. WW tracks only total “points” and I find that I need more information on content. I set the tracker to lose 1 lb per week, and that is what I lose if I meet the calorie goal.

One resource that I found very helpful in understanding and dealing with my carb addiction is the “sugar addiction” book by Kathryn DesMaisons. Her website is radiantrecovery.com.

Weighed in today…down one more pound. At this rate, it will be Christmas before I meet my goal!!

P.S. I just downloaded the free version of the Livestrong tracker…how do you know what to set it to to lose a pound a week? I guess that feature must be on the FULL ($2.99) app.

I was not even able to enter anything to try this app…I just deleted it.

^You can set it on the computer version.

Rescuing from page 3 to report that I’m down another half pound for a total of 11 lost.

It’s going very slowly now (1/4 lb/week) because I’ve been too overwhelmed for the past couple of months to track food or exercise, but I am eating less and different kinds of foods from before.

Good for everyone who weighed in today! Whether you lost 1/4 of a pound or two pounds, its still a loss. Picture a 1/4 pound of butter that is no longer on your bod!

As predicted I am stiff as a board today after yesterdays boot camp at the gym. Don’t know how I will keep up with 150 kids today. Hope there isn’t a fire in the building or I’m outta luck.

Hi, my name is Snowball and I am a carbaholic  My husband is a chocaholic, but carbs (well, bread) come in a close second!

For dinner tonight we are grilling and I was at Whole Foods and decided to get their premade chicken kabobs to serve with a salad and green bean. Usually I would have a starch with dinner as I really crave pasta, rice, potato, etc… Tonight I figured to drop the starch. I was doing so well until I ran into the samples of bread; there was fresh olive bread out! I didn’t buy it, but it took all my willpower not to. Now all I can think about is bread, so I have decided to add Quinoa unless I get this craving out of my head/stomach before it is time to make dinner.

For those of us that feel the need to continue to add a starch to their meal, what would be the best? I am not really well versed in nutrition, but want to learn which starch would be the best if I HAD to eat it with my dinner! For pasta I have switch to the whole wheat and we do eat smaller portions than in the past. While we both would like to lose 10 lbs., neither of us are overweight; just gain some middle age weight and know we would be healthier without it.

I eat only whole grain pastas and brown rice these days. There are some very good whole grain/high fiber breads that are delicious…of course you can’t eat a whole loaf:)

I find that a small helping of brown rice with my dinner is just right (1/2 cup is fine for me)…or whole wheat pasta.
