Weight Loss for Dummies

OK…weighed in today…at .4 pounds more than last week (how??? I don’t know). BUT funny…I checked my online WW account and I weighted exactly the same amount two years ago when I was on this diet…and also had gained just a tad that previous week. Then I started my downhill trend.

I have that Livestrong app on my IPad and I still haven’t figured out how to enter the number of pounds I want to lose per week to get the number of calories I can eat. I have the free version but it says I should be able to do this.

I eat potatoes a lot (thus my nickname of “Spud”) but I eat them in moderation and only do the decadent versions once in a while.

I saw a recipe last night that I have been obsessing over. It was spaghetti squash stuffed with roasted veggies. They roasted the squash and veggies, then “spaghettied” the squash and put it back into the shell with the sauteed veggies and a little bit of marinara. They did top it with cheese, but one could leave that out or use a healthier cheese in a small amount. It looked incredibly fabulous and it was almost exclusively vegetables with minimal fat.

thumper1- I was having the same problem yesterday. I don’t know what I eventually did but I finally hit a page that asked me for my weight and height and how much I wanted to lose each week.
I have also been keeping track of my hip and waist measurement. My hip measurement is the same after my vacation but while my weight is also the same my waist is up 2 inches. I would assume it is my carb bloat.
Yesterday did well till the late afternoon when I made the drastic mistake of purchasing a bag of peanut butter cookies at Whole Foods. Ate two in the car on my way home. Three more before bed. My big mistake was putting those cookies in the cart!
I realize I am good at the calorie tracker when I am doing well. When I slip I tend to not put it on the chart. Knowing I have slipped I just figure on to the next day. I think I need to track the slips to increase my awareness of my patterns.

zoosermom- recipe sounds delicious. Would your H and kids consider eating it for dinner? at my house I would have to make a 2nd entree for the rest of my family.

Thumper,
Once you are on your My Plate page, go to the tab that says Calorie goals.

Mom60,
I too find lapses in my tracking when I slip up. Trying this week to track every morsel.

Guys, guess what? My friend Jan, at the paleo/low carb food blog, has been nominated for Shape Magazine’s top Healthy Food Blog award! I am so proud and excited. If you have used any of her recipes, and feel inclined to vote, here’s a link to find the details. [Vote for Me on Shape.com?? | Jan’s Sushi Bar](http://www.janssushibar.com/?p=12351).

Does anyone have a good spinach lasagna recipe that isn’t too complicated? I moved a year ago and can’t seem to find some of my old recipes.

zm, that recipe sounds fantastic! I’m going to try it this weekend.

I love spaghetti squash. I use leftovers in soup. I make a vegetable soup with one of lentils/beans/chana dal every week, and usually puree it. Butternut or spaghetti squash thicken it and make it smooth.

Alumother, I’m so happy for Jan! I’ve been making her Honey-Mustard Chicken Legs for months. I’ll go vote for her.

I’ve never thought of that! I’m stealing your idea.

Sewhappy - here’s my recipe. I always use no boil lasagna noodles and I think they actually work better:

3 c. crushed tomatoes
1/2 c. chopped mushrooms
1/2 c. chopped red bell pepper
1/2 c. chopped onion (I just chop up a whole pepper and a large onion)
1/2 c. red wine or red grape juice
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 T honey (I use 1 T agave instead)
tsp dried basil, rosemary, oregano and thyme
1 1/2 cups lowfat or nonfat ricotta chees
8 oz lasagna noodles
1 pound fresh spinach, wash, drained well, and chopped
4 oz. lowfat or nonfat mozzarella cheese

Saute mushrooms, red pepper, carrots, onion & garlic in small amount of oil in a large heavy saucepan. When translucent, add tomatoes, wine or grape juice, honey, and spices. Simmer for 20 -30 minutes

Preheat oven to 350

To assemble, place a layer of sauce on bottom of lasagna pan. Cover with a layer of noodles. Spead ricotta chees over noodles and top with a layer of spinach. Add another layer of noodles, another layer of sauce and top with grated mozarella. Bake for 35 minutes.Let stand for 15 minutes before cutting.

workinprogress- sounds delicious.
With inspiration from this thread I went to MyPlate and finished my food log for yesterday. With the 5 peanut butter cookies I finished the day over by 300 calories. Today is a new day. Oatmeal plain for breakfast.
Alumother- thanks for the reminder about Jan’s blog. I used several of her recipes when you first directed us to her but I haven’t checked out her blog for awhile. Thanks for the reminder.

worknprogress - what a great recipe, I love that it’s from a homemade sauce vs from a jar but still manageable in number of ingredients and labor. Will make tonight. DH wants to go meatless two nights per week, fish two nights per week. I’m trying to support him on his goals. He’s three years older than me and in man-years that’s more like five years older than me so I figure I need to change my approach.

Alumother - I cast my vote for Jan but noticed that she is trailing. Looks like a great blog.

A friend made minestrone soup last weekend from summer’s last tomatoes. It smelled so good I wanted to put some behind my ears for perfume! Amazing what a difference fresh tomatoes can make. it did not inspire me to buy enough heirlooms at the farmer’s market to cook with them, but maybe next weekend. . .

Jan’s stuff is yumm. Vote for her Sushi Bar! We can’t let something like Fat Free Vegan Blog take the top spot! What is it - fat free vegan food? Steamed spinach?

Thank you everyone! Yes, she’s new to the game, and nowhere near as self-promotional as other food bloggers. Fat free vegan must be, um, air salad? Oooh, I’ll go Facebook this link too.

Mominva…I can enter my calorie goals…but where is the place where you enter how much weight you want to lose and it tells you how much you can eat? I don’t seem to see this on the Livestrong Lite version (even though the description says it should be there ).

Thumper,
What I see on my Calorie Goals page is a place for personalized calorie requirements.
There I enter age, height and weight.
Just below that is Goals: with dropdown box: eg. Lose 1 pound per week.
and below that is an drop down for activity level.
Then save and calculate.

There is a link to enter your own calorie goal; perhaps your page is set to that…

OK…I see now that I need to upgrade to the paid version of this application on my IPad to be able to personalize my goals. Since I have a lot of this on my WW app…I’m not thrilled about paying for another one.

BUT another question…I can’t seem to enter my bike riding under activities…I’ve typed everything you can think of into the search…bicycle, bike, stationary bike…and I get “no match found”. Maybe THATs not included in the freebie either??

Thumper,
I am on the free version on my laptop. I can do this and I found Bicycling under the Fitness tab. Maybe instead of the App you should enter the site through a browser.

ZM–someone just gave me a spaghetti squash. Your post is so timely!
