Weight Loss for Dummies

^^^ Perfect advice.

Keeping track of your calories and nutrients (fats, sugars, - lots of sugars are hidden) on Livestrong will help you to see how your diet truly is.

And good for you for tackling the exercise room!

Dizzycat - I would second mathmom’s suggestion and her observation. I know I have had period of times when my weight was just STUCK and I was so discouraged. Now this will sound crazy, my DH says it isn’t possible, but I actually lost more weight once I eliminated diet sodas. Don’t know if that is part of your routine, but it made a difference for me.

Hang in there. Stick with healthy changes, do your aerobic and weight training workouts and your body will change.

dizzycat - you would probably get a lot of good information and help at this wonderful CC parent cafe site:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/838576-diet-exercise-health-wellness-support-thread.html

dizzycat, I’ve found that if I track what I eat at Livestrong, I steadily lose 1 pound a week. If I don’t track, my weight stays the same, whether I feel that I am eating well or not. Exercise doesn’t seem to make much difference in weight, although it makes a huge difference in how I feel.

I agree with sewhappy that the people on the other thread would be very helpful. There are some real experts on exercise routines, and they are very generous with information and support.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice. I’ll definitely start tracking what I eat more seriously. As for the tape measure, the only change I’ve seen is up on top! I put weight on around my middle; my hips are the same size they were when I was 20 pounds lighter.

@WinP: I’ve never been a soda drinker (diet or otherwise), but your story reminds me of a coworker who once mentioned that he lost 10 pounds in a month just by giving up diet soda at lunch.

Dizzy cat how old are you and are you male or female

Nothing much to say, just bumping the thread up a bit. Lost .5 over the last week; altogether down 1.8 in two weeks. Fine by me since I expected to gain with both Thanksgiving and DS being home for 10 days. Back to a stricter eating regimen to better fit the lovely old (er, vintage) blue sequined dress that I plan to wear New Year’s Eve. Delighted to be back into it but apparently it did stretch at some point in the past since it’s labeled size 11! I know I wasn’t a size 11 when I last wore it…

Ooohh, Marilyn, you just gave me an idea! I had a size 13 Jessica McClintock dress that I wore to a big formal event back in the good old days (I was less than 115 lb back then). I probably needed a 9, but that was the only dress in the entire store that fit my budget of a graduate student - I bought it. I had no money for alterations, so I laced the back as tight as I could, wore the thickest padded bra I could find in my undies drawer… Since the guests at that fundraising gala got drunk pretty quickly, no one really noticed that my dress did not fit perfectly. DH thought that I looked like a princess!

I’m going to dig in D’s closet to see if the dress is still there and if it fits me now. If it does, I know what I will wear for New Years! :)

If you track your progress by measuring your waistline at navel level, you may notice it more than on the scale, since exercising can cause you to gain muscle which can “hide” the fat loss from the scale.

Generally, your waistline should be less than half your height for good health. Very lean people may get down to 42% of their height or so.

So here I thought at Thanksgiving that my mom was admiring my new body but apparently she was aghast at my hair. She just called and offered as a Chanukah present to treat me to a professional coloring and styling at her place. Granted I was way overdue on my self coloring, but she kept asking if I wanted red hair. I did change my shade to a warm brunette (from dark brown) a while back (and L’Oreal completely changed their temp color line), and when I don’t keep up it fades to a reddish color over the 15-20% gray. But I’ve chosen not to go professional (too much time and money to keep up), and if I did want to do it I would go to my own stylist! Maybe I should have put this in the rant thread…I’m sure she never thought how insulting that might sound.

Now I’m wondering that was the main topic of conversation with SIL in their car all the way back home. Food was great, Marilyn finally lost weight, but OMG her hair!!

My mother noticed my weight loss last week.

I just found out that she is part of that huge and long-term nurses study that has produced so much good research on diet and nutrition. She’s also in another study on exercise in older people (she’s in her 90s). They provide weights, fitness facilities and training and monitoring of what you do. She showed me the weights that they gave her. She told me that a lot of people her age have no muscle tone at all. It was kind of interesting discussing workout out with her - I discuss this with two of my sisters who work out a lot - I think that my other sister is just starting to work out.

Had a great weigh in on Friday…still on the downward trend. I do a lot more moving on the tennis court nowadays. People are starting to notice!

Videos, please!

Someday I’m going to do a video of myself playing - I just need to buy the equipment to do that sort of thing.

You could hire someone to do it, I’m sure. All those wedding videographers would love to have a client who didn’t need to be filmed on a weekend…

I’m rescuing this thread from the third page to contribute this recipe I found for a fantastic winter salad. I made it twice this weekend. Everyone loved it, including S1 and S2. I followed the recipe exactly.

[Tricolor Bitter Greens Salad Recipe | MyRecipes.com](http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/tricolor-bitter-greens-salad-10000000592305/)

We all must have had a very busy weekend…

I think I walked at least 3 miles at the mall on Sunday.

Hope you were wearing sensible shoes ^^^^^^^

I know you have been bedeviled with a ornery knee - pamper the darn thing or else recovery time will be so much longer. I KNOW if I had been more careful when I first suspected my stress fracture it would not have taken as long to heal. Tip #1 - do not rush to the marble/tile dance floor for every Motown or Blues Brother son. Taking heels off does not really diminish damage.

I am ALMOST back to my usual routine. I don’t think I am quite back to pre-injury speed, but I am not concerned. What I am postponing is any thoughts of competition which would require a resumption of speed work. I think I will just wait until spring.

I am about 2 pounds higher than my lowest weight and I am going to be vigilant these next few weeks. I do not want to go into January any heavier than I am now. February is a big month for me and I want to feel my best.

NYMomof2 - thanks for sharing the bitter greens salad recipe. I printed and will try tomorrow. It sounds delicious.

I hope you like it, sewhappy. The first time I made it, I forgot the shaved Parmesan, and it was quite good without it.

Yes, the next few weeks will take fortitude and strength. I have been going to the gym every Tuesday morning for Boot Camp and then going on my own and trying to replicate the circuits that we do. I know I work much harder when the trainer is there watching me than I do alone! Today (about a month into this routine) I am able to do full push-ups and have increased my weights on most of the exercises. The trainer was very impressed!

I will keep that at the front of my mind when faced with the truffle and cookies.
