For example, I am eating spaghetti bolognese, only on cooked carrots instead of pasta. Tastes delicious, good mouth feel.

^^^^
No. Now c’mon. Carrots instead of pasta?! No. You can pretend all you want, Alumother but I will never believe that it tastes as good as a legit spaghetti Bolognese with a touch of cream and homemade fettuccini and a touch of cinnamon and a good grated parmesan. No way.

Good for you, though! :)

It does to me. No cream, either:).

Okay, I’m in. I have a 30th high school reunion this summer and need to shake off 10 lbs that snuck up on me ever since my D went to college in 2009. I don’t need to look like a model, but I would like to look a little more trim and fit than I feel right now. (I was voted most athletic in high school … ugh, how do you live that up 30 years later?)

Anyway, it has crept up on me …5 lbs when my D left for college in 2009 when she was a freshman, then I exercised off 3 and held it, then gained 5 lbs the next year, and I did the yo-yo again … 2 lbs off, but still a net gain since 2009, and then finally this year, 5 lbs again, so I’m really +5-3+5-2+5 = 10 lbs and some tight clothes!

I just need a little push … I told myself that I have this week to send out graduation invites, finish up some house projects, and then back on my exercise and healthier eating routine.

Can someone PM me next week to make sure I don’t forget my promise to myself?

If I can get up early and exercise for a week then I think it will kick start me enough to start the good habits again.

Also, I like the ketosis concept … if I see the science behind why I can’t have that Hershey bar after lunch I may create some extra willpower just by seeing that stick turn the right color.

Not to worry…at your 30th, no one will remember whom they voted for what, LOL!

I remember reading about this in the Atkins book. They had a menu for 7 days listed (and you were supposed to eat the same thing for the next week). I think that I would need something like that (or maybe pre-packaged meals) to do induction. It’s not how I normally eat…

I’ve lost about eight pounds since February. I’ve been sick the last two weeks and exercising less as a result so I think I gained one pound back. I’d love to hit the ten pound mark.

SnowflakeVT–can you pack a snack that is better for you than a Hershey bar? Or is the candy in a machine calling to you? :D

Pack nuts, cheese, anything high in protein & low in carbs. Maybe a few chocolate chips in a mix you make yourself, so you have your chocolate fix. :)

I stayed the same during my conference, including a banquet dinner at home last night! Ok, that was awesome, but now I have to get a push over this stagnant space. Water, water, walk, water, water, walk.

mommusic … I think I will have to pack snacks to avoid the temptation of the snack area … it’s worse than a machine … you put money in a jar and take one of like a hundred bad things (Hershey bar, Skittles, chips, etc.). The snacks are from Costco and an empty office is reserved to display the junk. Some other group maintains in and I just have to not go there.

Anyway, I found the ketosis strips this morning at CVS and also the raspberry ketone tablets. Does that really work, and if so, how do I use the strips to tell if I am burning fat properly … if the color is anything but tan (lowest color) do I assume I am on the right track or do I need to reduce carb intake enough to move to the middle of the strip?

I did stop by the grocery store this morning and only bought healthy fruits and snacks. Check! Now I just need to make wise choices at this Kentucky Derby party later today.

I really retain a lot of water, I just started my period & I lost four lbs in one day.
Being married to someone who weighs the same as they did in high school, is a PITA.
But at least he is getting better about not trying to sabotage healthier eating. ( he used to insist on having ice cream & such in the house at all times, now he just buys it for a treat, and tries to make sure he eats all of it so I am not tempted)

Snowflake,
Re ketostix: I try to stay on the third darkest, but dip to the fourth on occasion… I have never gotten to the top two darkest!
This time around I am seeing a nutritionist who has an impedance scale, so I learn my fat vs muscle vs water loss. It has been interesting- in the pounds I am losing, I am not losing any muscle yet, yay! (I wish we all had one of these machines in our homes- very helpful, to say the least…) Eating a lot of protein is helping with that, I suspect.
I would say ANY level of ketones is good, and more probably is better in terms of fat loss, but it depends on you, what you can tolerate in terms of comfort, and in terms of what reducing carbs does to your ketone level.
***To all in ketosis- DRINK AT LEAST 8 GLASSES OF WATER A DAY! This is CRUCIAL to pass all the wastes. It is healthier, anyway, better for appetite control, a good way to avoid sugary beverages, and good for the skin!

What are those raspberry ketone tablets? What do they do, etc.???

I have been reading a book called “The lean” although the woman is vegan. She has some good ways of managing food. For example on day # 1 you just drink water along with your regular diet, then day #2 you adopt a new habit. pretty soon you are crowding out, the bad habits with the new ones. I think many of her ideas ae good, although I need to eat eggs and some dairy. I have to limit soy. I have been working on changing my choices and habits and I am proud to say I am making headway.
I have a friend who lost 80 pounds through diet and exersize. She looks awesome. I an into her in the store and we are going to chat about food. I want to know what you can REALLY eat and how much you need to exersize from someone my age who has done it. I am really happy for her, she is just glowing, and is loving practicing things from 50 Shades of Gray (I think the name of that book) wink wink

I read from one of you about in the last week or so about raspberry ketone tablets. Has anyone found that this actually works? I don’t like any kind of drug to lose weight, but if this is relatively harmless and based on science, I might try it.

Answer to raspberry ketone question (from Dr. Oz website):

What is raspberry ketone?
Raspberry ketone is an aromatic component present in raspberries and other fruits. It can also be produced synthetically in a lab.

Why has raspberry ketone been targeted for weight loss?
Scientists had previously shown that pungent compounds with similar chemical structures, such as capsaicin and synephrine, had lipolytic activity – causing fat breakdown – in rats fed a high-fat diet and in in vitro fat cells.

What did scientists do in the lab?
In one experiment, to test the effect on obesity, mice were fed a high-fat diet plus raspberry ketone for about 10 weeks. Other experiments were carried out in vitro (in test tubes, petri dishes, etc.).

What did scientists learn about fat cells?
Researchers observed that, compared to controls, raspberry ketone decreased the amount of fat in the liver and visceral adipose (abdominal fat) tissues of mice. It also significantly increased norepinephrine-induced lipolysis (the decomposition of fat) in some rat fat cells.

Researchers also tested in vitro fat cells with raspberry ketone and found that they showed greater evidence of breakdown when compared to controls.

What did scientists find out about the relationship between raspberry ketone and adiponectin?
Adiponectin is a protein used by the body to regulate metabolism. Higher levels are associated with fewer fat stores. Scientists studied the effects of raspberry ketones on in vitro fat cells and observed a higher secretion of adiponectin when compared to controls.

That is fascinating about raspberry ketone!
I do eat berries on my lo-carb diet, including raspberries, but I suspect that one would need to consume a higher concentration of the ketone than found in a small serving of the berries! I will look for it when I shop next. Thanks for the info!

This raspberry ketone breakthrough is very good news for obese rats that are looking to lose weight. I wonder if or how well it works in humans.

^^LOL! Those rats have all the luck…

Scientists have studied the effect on IN VITRO fat cells. Looking forward to what some of you have to say about the effect on IN VIVO fat cells (around your middle).

So who wants to replace the rat with themselves and be our experiment and then report back?

In the meantime, I have these ketone strips and I’m going to use them to give me visual feedback on whether or not I actually reach the fat-burning stage. Between now and when my house projects wrap up this week, I can at least eat healthier and try to go into the zone before I kick it up a notch with more regular exercise.

Congrats to all of you that have hit some goals, lost 0.5 pounds here and there and are generally on the right track. You are my inspiration!

Yes, rats and mice today live in a blessed, gloden age. They’ve discovered so many different ways to cure cancer in rodents that I can’t begin to count them up. The rats must be thrilled with all the progress we’ve made on their behalf. Unfortunately, only a small handful of those therapies have translated effectively into humans. Maybe we’ll be luckier with weight loss.

I’m not sure I’d be willing to eat a ketone by tablespoons. Of course, ketones are less reactive than aldehydes, but still…

LOL, coureur. The number of mice cured of cancer is so staggering, that if all of them were lined up, the line would circle the Earth multiple times. :)
