ellemenope–I am proud of you! It’s so hard to resist those warm pre-dinner muffins & rolls. One place near us has fresh biscuits that just keep coming. I could make a meal of them.

EPTR–I buy the Dreamfield’s pasta also. It’s VERY good and not grainy like whole-wheat pasta.

Trouble is, my H thinks he can eat the same amount of pasta when he’s in a restaurant and it’s NOT low-carb. :(

LOL, ellemenope. Don’t think I can lose 52 lbs!! I am down another lb. (even with my birthday celebration in there, and another dinner out tonight). Am 14# down, 5 1/2 to go to get to goal, though I’d like to lose a few more after that, just to have a cushion. In the past I’ve stopped at this goal # I have currently set. Will be nice to see if I can get below it.

I’ve found that eating high fiber oat bran cereal is filling and helps with the weight loss. I seem to lose when I eat it, and plateau when I don’t.

A dress I bought at the outset of this diet is now a bit too big Also shopped before I went to the beach and had to buy some in the junior dept, and in the adult dept I bought a petite small. Is that redundant? :)

Snowflake checking back in after graduation celebrations and relatives visiting. Had a great week, worked hard and played hard and ended up zero pounds lost or gained, so it was like I put weight loss on hold and didn’t lose ground with what I had already lost.

It’s great to be back in the fruit season - the peaches, cherries, and melon are delicious. And my tomato plants (grown from seed) have started flowering. I usually leave this up to DH but was inspired by the delicious heirloom tomatoes in San Diego.

I’ve been bouncing around the same pound for a while; the Wii fit has been teasing me by coming thisclose (like .2 lb) above Normal but keeping me Overweight. Arggh!

On the bright side, I bought two pairs of size 12 shorts at Kohl’s the other day, first time I’ve been that size since pre-baby. I was inspired by watching Mitzi Gaynor and her little white shorts in South Pacific, which I checked out of the library just for fun while DH was away. I wanted white shorts but weirdly enough all of the white shorts marked size 12 at Kohl’s were actually size 14 (I went to two different stores so believe the entire production shipped to our area was mis-marked). So I got both green and pink instead (good buy of the day; with my 30% off the final cost for both was a total of $15.60 for retail $34 apiece).

And yes plenty of water today; supposed to hit 100. I’ve seen forecasts ranging from 101 to 108 but it’s clouding over so it probably won’t even make 100. We shall see.

I started off today wit the best intentions…ate thoughtfully until around dinnertime when I got a phone call that stressed me out. I opened the wine and ordered the pizza.

It’s been too hot to cook or eat so I’ve been drinking a lot (iced tea with mint, lemon, and a touch of agave syrup or honey) and eating cold foods–salads with salmon on, lots of veggies.

Tonight before dinner it was still near 100 degrees and I desperately needed to water some things before they expired, so I fixed a plate of sliced cucumber, peppers, and cherry tomatoes with a slab of goat cheese also, and took it out to where I needed to hold the hose for a while. I was in the shade so it wasn’t so bad. :)

First time poster in this thread, student, not parent, but you knew that. Coming on here because after years knowing that I need to lose weight, I’ve finally given in and admitted I can’t do it without some kind of moral support.

I’m looking to lose >40 lbs (which will take me out of the overweight range) for my height and age, and am primarily doing it by a combination of a low-carb diet and weights. Started just a few days ago, yet to see clear results, but I’ll check in every day in the hopes of keeping myself accountable.

My long-term goal is to get myself into shape to play a sport at the club level. It may not happen this year, but that’s something I’m working towards before I graduate in 2014.

The Tuscan Bean Salad at Costco is pretty low calorie and absolutely delicious this time of year served cold. I grilled salmon early in the day, then served it cold with this salad and a green salad. Pretty health meal, I think.

Welcome, Peculiarities!
I’ll check in daily, too and we can cheer each other on. Don’t be discouraged yet, it’s too early to see any results. Just keep up the good work.

Jym, is that a formal diet or just another way of saying low carb? I bought a cookbook on the clearance table at Barnes and Noble. I think it’s called Low Glycemic cooking.

Congratulations on a really great decision. You are so smart to get a handle on it now!

Your approach (lower carb and resistance weight training) is a really sound way to attack it. Those are probably the two most effective things most of us can do for fat loss. At your age, I would expect you to see pretty rapid results.

Try to set small, incremental goals: say five pounds. That way, when you are faced with tempting choice, you can play little mind games. “No… I’m not going to have the bread with dinner. It’s just for a couple more days until I lose this five pounds, and then I’ll have some bread…” It’s a lot easier than thinking you have to give up bread forever (although that may, in fact, happen as you start to really enjoy being fit.

keep a food diary. a website and app called my fitness pal is great. They give you back calories if you exercised that day and you can monitor you fat, carbs, sodium, etc.
Another cool thing is that the mobile app has a barcode scanner so its easy to put things in. Their food database is huge - even from chain restaurants and such.

I’m no expert but I would think that your weight is fine for your height. There are charts online that you can find out the weight range for your height. Try Livestrong.com.

Congrats everyone - this thread is a great motivator and support group because you all seem to be doing so well. I’m particularly struck by how when you fall off the wagon due to a sinful brownie day, or a couple of weeks of being injured and not being able to exercise, you don’t just give up. You just keep plugging away. That’s so admirable.

I have a question about treadmills. I use an incline of 4 (whatever that means) and speed of about 3.4 mph. I only walk, never run, because I just hate running. Hurts my knees. This gets my heart rate up between 128 and 145 for about 20 minutes. I’m on the treadmill for about 30 minutes total. Is this good enough, or should 8 be doing something different?

Congrats on working out, hayden. I would imagine the steepness will affect your heartrate, but also cold aggravate your knees. You sound fine, at least to me (who is doing very little exercise, so its all good sounding to me!)

Hayden! Here’s the thing, in the world of maintenance a brownie here or there is just fine. Brownie death spirals, however, are to be avoided:).
