Weight Loss for Dummies

Those are great sites, Packmom. My DH wanted to try the new version of his current running shoes (he currently has the Asics GT-2160s) so I knew I couldn’t find the new 2170’s discounted at places like Overstock.

I forgot to mention, I ordered though my mrrebates link so will get an additional $2.50 back as well! :D

BTW I also like that my Saucony’s are made in the USA. I am not so sure the fabric and innerds are made here, but they are at least assembled in Maine. Thats better than nothing, I suppose.

Okay, at weigh-in at the gym I am down 1.6 pounds. Woo hoo!

EPTR, have to say it: I’m jealous!!! Good for you - I’ve been eating too much the last couple of days, so you’re inspiring me to get back on track–I am SO close to my goal!!!

Keep inspiring!

Ditto, SJTH. We are almost there. No change for me from yesterday. I guess I should have eaten the cereal yesterday, which I did not. Munched on fresh peaches, which I LOVE.

Jym,
Are you weighing yourself every day? I have sworn not to do that as my weight fluctuates and I get annoyed if it goes up a few ounces. I’m committed to a weekly weigh in, this time.

I have a job interview today that has my stomach in knots. No appetite. The silver lining to stress.

Marilyn - well, aren’t YOU something else!!!

Ah, those last five pounds. They are tough. And tough to keep off.

I do weigh myself every day. I know that doesn’t work for everyone, but if I see the numbers go up for two or three days, I revert to diet mode. I use the no sugar/no flour approach coupled with no carbonated drinks.

I also (and this probably sounds nuts) do “anticipatory” dieting. If I know something is coming up where I will be eating more than usual, I try to go super lean and fresh a day or two before the event.

Summer makes dieting easy for me. I just load up on fresh fruits and veggies and I am a pretty happy girl.

Some people have to weigh every day or couple times / day or more often. I do not know how much to eat in a evening if I do not weigh myself after work. Everybody’s weight fluctuates, mostly depending on salt and sugar intake as these tend to retain water in a body. Also, the diff. between morning and evening is about 2 - 3 lbs. I do not see why to stress about it though. You ate, you enjoyed, you gained, you will loose (if you want), and you will not loose (if you do not want to), pretty simple and straight forward, just some facts of our biology as part of animal world.
Do not worry about interview, EPTR! The less you worry, the better you will do. Your well being, including your mental well being is the most important, just do not let small events of life (like gaining weight or job interview) bother you, be happy. I always tell my own kid before her cruel 6 hrs exams, be happy that you are not sick and have supporting family and many firends, nothing, absolutely nothing zilch is anywhere close as important. Exams could be retaken, another job interview might be offerred, another pound could be lost or gained, too small to worry about.
Best wishes, whatever you wish will come true, enjoy the process!! If it makes you feel better, I was unemployed 9 times, went thru many many interviews in my life. The only way I know is to enter with the smile and be truthful about everything. One of my best jobs I got after admitting that not only I do not have experience, but I even do not know what the name of position stands for (it was an acronym). Not only I was good at this job, but I also enjoyed it very very much, you never know. And on top, they gave me more money than I have asked.

Be positive, this cliche always works!!!

I’ve gone back to tracking meals at Livestrong as I have basically stayed steady for the last year. Back when I started this (25 pounds ago) my goal was to find a level of eating that I could live with forever and hopefully would find some steady state at a weight I was happy with. Well the weight I have ended up at is really about 15 pounds more than where I’d like to be. There are some obvious areas to cut back, just slightly less caloric snacks is one. A little less indulging at parties and evening meetings. And maybe just a little more exercise. My goal is to try to cut 100 calories or exercise 100 calories more a day. We’ll see.

I weigh myself everyday. I’m well aware of the fluctuations, but if I’m up 3 pounds after a weekend (like last weekend), even if it’s salt it’s still a signal to cut back a little. (I’m back at last week’s weight thankfully!)

Good luck with the job interview, EPTR.

I am doing what mathmom is doing-- logging in what I eat on the livestrong website. I do it as often as possible, but do take breaks when we are away and it is really tough to figure out how to easily log in what is eaten at restaurants. On those days I don’t weigh in either. We were away this past weekend and the hotel had a digital scale nicely tucked under the sink, where it remained.

I find that if I don’t weigh in daily I am avoiding it. I understand the daily fluctuations, but still find it keeps me honest if I weigh in as often as I can. Livestrong gives little “awards” for logging in/weighing in for a certain number of consecutive days. Unfortunately those little digital award ribbons are not terribly meaningful.

Now that I am in “maintain” mode, I don’t log my meals onto My Plate. I do log in my fitness activities though. I weigh myself more often now (used to be once a week, but now it is every couple of days)–like WNP2, if the numbers start to creep up, I put the hammer down.

I am finding that my new eating regimen has become part of my new lifestyle. That’s good, because I really want to stay this weight!

LMNOP-
I hope I am not getting too personal, but did you lose 50 lbs?? That is amazing!!! I am in awe!

Damn, all I did was give up potato chips and I lost three lbs.
I loved those potato chips too.
:(

80 pounds, jym, over the course of a year!! (but who’s counting… :))

OMG, LMNOP, that is incredible!!! Super congrats!!! How did you do it???

LMNOP is our winner! Excellent!

I do want to point out that I am normal only in the very narrowly defined constraints of the Wii fit, i.e. under BMI of 25. Otherwise I am quite, um, eclectic. It will think I’m healthy if I hit a BMI of 22. Dream on, Wii fit!

Our overnight trip to Michigan tomorrow will probably bump me back into overweight, but the Sherman’s ice cream visit will be worth it.

I rarely gain on ice cream. It kills my appetite. Try it for breakfast. I love ice cream. My favorite is Costco, both Kirkland tab vanilla and over the counter soft ice cream, I love very berry sundae. I gain on ice cream when I eat it at the end of every meal for couple weeks, which I do on my all inclusive vacation. Ice cream in Mexico is uncomparable, it is beyond anything that I have ever tasted at home. I never feel sorry, pounds are gone when I go back to my normal “home” eating.
Best wishes, Marilyn, enjoying your Sherman’s and beautiful Ann Arbor if that is where you are going.

Thank you , everyone for your encouragement on the job interview and the weight loss. The interview is actually for a promotion as I am employed, thank goodness. Whatever happens, all is well.

Going to the gym today helped with the stress and anxiety.

Thanks MiamiDAP; we’re going to South Haven/Saugatuck since only one of is a big art fair fan (and Mich alumni). Go Blue!

^I missed our local art fair this year. We have about the same artists as in Mich. I always enjoy it. Yes, half (or more ) of locals are “Go Blue” people, I am not into sports except for Olympics, (but even Phelps was swimming at U of Mich. for awhile, they have gorgeous pool! You can buy anything with “Go Blue” anywhere here, including Dollar General.
Enjoy your trip, it cooled down a bit, thank goodness!! Do not get into calory counts, it can wait!

With all due respect, this is a thread about weight loss. Talking about ice cream and the best sundaes doen’t help my calorie counting!! And as for vacations, while one might not calorie count, still watching food intake is a good thing. Stick with it, everyone. It is a way of life, a lifestyle change, not a “diet”.

That said, I just hit the 15 lb mark!! Yay!!
