Weight Loss for Dummies

Anyone want to share some filling, simple breakfast ideas???

I usually take breakfast with me to work. In the summer, that often is Stonyfield whole milk plain yogurt with fresh fruit and granola (need the crunch). Because I can get carried away, I try to stay away from bread/butter stuff - like them both TOO much!

I try to keep it more protein then carb based, though some carbs are fine. Will do steel cut oats soon when it gets really cold.

I sometimes just micro a couple of eggs, sprinkle some cheese on top and maybe a little ham or leftover bacon if it’s in the refrig. Another thing I do is a big apple with either peanut butter or some sharp cheese.

Any out of the ordinary or just plain good breakfast ideas appreciated!

Way to go Marilyn!!! Congrats!!

I am trying to shed the few pounds I gained. Gained 5 (eek!) but lost half of that, which puts me back at 4.5 lbs from my goal.

Israeli breakfast? i.e. salad, tabouli, hummus, cheese, nuts, olives… There’s no rule that you have to eat traditional American breakfast food.

OK, do not repeat what I did yesterday : 2.5 bagels, cake, lots of fruit and nuts and a huge surprise on a scale, lost about .5 lbs. Well, I bet lbs will come my way today or couple days later. Unless my 3 hrs of exercise scared them off, but you cannot seriously rely on exercise taking care of that many calories, no way!!!
I cannot consume “Israeli breakfast” in a morning, there is no way. Just too much of too many various foods. My stomach is asleep and needs simplicity. Chocolate wakes it up every morning, followed by coffee (with chocolate) and then fruit(s) later all the way until lunch.
I would love to have “Israeli breakfast” for lunch or dinner, all my favorites and practically staple foods in my fridge. I would have it spread/divided into about 3/4 meals or so. I am a bit confused about salad AND tabouli??? Tabouli is a salad, at least in our locality.

I admit to La Brea Whole Grain bread and Justin’s Chocolate Peanut Butter washed down with two cups of Organic Breakfast tea with 1% milk.

Also fish oil and probiotics:). Don’t know how filling those are…

Way to go, Marilyn!!!

abasket :I eat 2 weetabix cereal , non fat milk with blueberries and at least 2 cups of Lady Gray tea. I feel full and sets me up for the day. Not very easy to take to the office. I Saw on pinterest little egg quiches made in muffin tins. Let me look and see if I can find a link.

Found it

This also looks yummy- but more for eating at home

Thanks for the reminder - I think I have those egg things ( or something similar) pinned!!!

Sometimes I scramble an egg with an extra egg white (or just use egg whites if you want) I put it in a small whole wheat tortilla and add a bit of monterey jack and salsa. Yummy.

Just got back from my first trip to the grocery store since joining WW. I think I did pretty well…mostly stuck to the perimeter of the store. The two biggest hurdles for me are getting in the nine daily servings of fruits and veggies plus getting activity points. I earned my first activity points for the 40 minutes I spent walking around the store. So that was cool.

My WW phone app has a scanner and I was scanning up a storm! It’s interesting to see what number of points are given to each food. If the barcode is not already, they have a calculator so you can figure out the points on your own. So, there I was, punching in the numbers and either throwing it in the basket or putting it back on the shelf. I tried to stay out of people’s way but I’m sure a few folks wished I would move along!

I have been on Atkins diet for 15 days, losing 10.6 lbs so far. My one daily constant has been salmon, but I have read that it isn’t safe to have fish more than a couple of times a week because of mercury levels. Some things I have read say that you only need to watch the consumption of large fish and that salmon is fine to have liberally. Can any of you clarify this issue for me?

GA2012MOM - About 10 years ago I went on a low carb diet and started eating lots of tuna salad. I came down with what I thought was a horrible flu, with the added strange symptom of extreme dizziness. I later figured out that it was almost certainly mercury poisoning. I took many, many months to get over my vertigo. For several weeks I couldn’t drive and even walking was a challenge. My advice would be to not risk it.

Pugmadkate - good for you spending the time in the store to make good choices - sounds like the apps you have are really helpful!

I can’t answer the fish question - you’re not sick of salmon yet?!

GA2012–I personally don’t know anyone who has done Atkins and kept the weight off long term. Some have lost over 30 pounds only to gain all back plus more.
I do know a couple who use it only short term (a week or two) to jump start a diet plan on a sporadic basis which seems to work for them.
No carbohydrates can cause mental changes, mainly depression which can come on very slowly. They don’t call carbs “comfort food” for nothing. Your brain needs them.
As great as fish is, mercury is a worry but salmon (wild salmon) is better than most and appears to have the lowest levels. But when you eat something everyday, even the lowest levels could become a problem. Mercury doesn’t go away–the body does not process it-so over time the levels build up.
Moderation in all things!

I did Atkins in the buzz years. Yes, lost 20 pounds but it all came back ( plus more) Hoping the healthy eating diet will sustain my weight loss for the next 30+ years.

GA2012MOM- can you switch chicken for Salmon? I eat a lot of salmon too, especially from costco. I don’t eat red meat, so fish is pretty much a stable for me. I have smoked salmon, cucumber, tomato on crisp bread for lunch a lot. I also like the cans of kippers ( also costco) It does worry me, that I eat too much of this type of food. Now the cooler months are coming I will have home made soup and fruit for lunch.

Hi all, I’ve been lurking here for a while, finally found the courage to jump in! My only child (DS) is a freshman, moved him to a college 1200 miles away where, thankfully, he is very happy and doing well in classes! I am a single parent, so now have some time for me (between helping my aging mom, handling all household chores and maintenance, pets, and working 45+ hours a week, but whatever).

Started Nutrisystem 3 weeks ago with the goal of losing 40 lbs. Currently down 8 and not starving by any means, so I am pretty happy so far. I have tried a few other programs in the past with limited success and weight regain +, so I’m cautiously optimistic at this point. The food is decent, and I am definitely eating more fruits and veggies than ever before, so it’s a start in the right direction.

My main problem right now is exercise. I have a road bike that I ride on occasion, but the weather here will not allow that for much longer. I find walking extremely boring…although I will try the walking over the feet advice above and see if that helps with my occasional singing knee. I think I just need that literal ‘push off the edge’ to get me going!

I do find all of your stories very uplifting and motivational, I think this may be the nudge I need. I have carried the extra weight since my kiddo was born to varying degrees (yes, a long time), but have always felt that the ‘thin’ me was inside just trying to escape. Any exercise advice would be appreciated, and congrats on all of your successes!

I love that - and how true - that you can feel the “thin me” wanting to escape!

Marilyn, you are an inspiration! Congratulations!

abasket, this is a variation on one of your themes. I like to mix steel-cut oats with nonfat plain Greek yogurt. I also add some chia seeds, some almonds or other nuts, and a few raisins or dried cherries. And I put in lots of cinnamon. This is incredibly filling and has protein.

That sounds yummy NYmom. I love steel cut oatmeal. Never even heard of Chia seeds. Had to look them up. Wow, they sound great. Do they have a nutty flavor? Would be good to eat just before going out for a run.
