I have started running on the treadmill at cardiac rehab. This absolutely blows my mind; the last time I ran was in early college. I am trying to run two minutes out of every five on the treadmill, and as things go along, build up to longer stretches. My running pace is 3.5 mph, but that’s OK. The rehab folks are thrilled silly. So am I.

I am finding that when I am stressed and worried (esp. about S2), I want to hide in the house and not go out and deal with the world, including going to exercise. That, dear friends, is PRECISELY the best time for me to go. It blows away my stress and is a much healthier way to boost my mood and keep me from eating junk because I am blue.

abasket, congrats on your 5k! I should go look at their regimen (and slow it way down).

The regime is “at your own pace”. - it’s a 30 minute workout every time . 30mins doesn’t mean 3 miles - early on, it might not even be two miles - but you build up over time.

Congrats Counting- you have grabbed onto life!!!

abasket - thanks for the words of wisdom. I did my two miles but added carrying 5 pound dumbells in each hand. It felt good, did not stress my knee or my neck and I got my exercise in for the day. Food-wise it was an ok, but not spectacular day. As suspected, too much cheese, but on the other hand, very few empty carbs! My goal now is as advised, msake sure to get in at least 30 minutes of exercise every day. Thanks everyone - the support here really helps keep it on track.

abasket – my jog around the lake with the kids was a somewhat similar experience. I was all like I’ll just jog and see how long I can keep up with you and that lasted for about 20 ft . . . even though they were going slow and I could watch them gradually fade into the distance . . .

Today is a super beautiful day, so maybe I’ll try that experiment again, LOL.

Today is a beautiful day and I’m about to go out for a brisk walk. I keep reminding myself that I want to keep up with my 3 1/2 year old grandson who hikes & climbs rocky trails in Israel!

Edit: And I have to report progress on the pull-up front: I can now lift myself about a foot off the ground! And if I jump up I can sustain a hold about 5 seconds! SO much better than when I started two months ago…then I thought I’d probably bust a tendon if I tried lifting my own weight.

So this is a weekend bound to be filled with parties - Memorial day picnics, graduation parties, etc.!

Let’s share some tips/motivation as we all anticipate tables of yummy food in front of us!

Here’s a couple from me:
I know there will be some foods I don’t want to give up - the dips, a dessert…so what can I give up to help minimize the damage???
have any grilled meats without buns
-add veggie condiments to meat to help provide fiber and help fill me up (lettuce, tomato, onion, etc…
smaller portions - have the pasta salad, but a SMALL amount.
make sure my plate is colorful - healthy foods tend to be have more color.

List your tips and then we can all think of each other as we approach the enticing food tables!!!

I find drinking a glass of water before I head to a party and starting with water or club soda once there fills me up and I eat and drink less. Other than that I really have nothing to add, though all the rain forecast for our area this weekend is likely to diminish the number of opportunities to indulge in picnic/barbecue food!

I don’t like pasta salad that much so I just don’t eat it. I try to alternate glasses of seltzer or water with wine. Keeps me from getting too tipsy as well as reducing the calorie hit. I like trying all the desserts, but I take truly tiny portions. I don’t mind cutting a brownie into quarters so I can also try the pie. :)

I can easily do without the bun on the burger. It’s the appies that get me. Use veggies for the dips rather than crackers or chips. Stick to wine over mixed drinks and drink lots of water too.

Does anyone have a good idea for a simple berry dessert for me (watching carbs) and H (type 2 diabetic)?

We are going to a dinner party tonight and I want to do something simple like mixed berries with a liquer and whipped cream but have never done that. Anyone have a tip?
