Thanks, I realize that I am very fortunate to be able to live this way.

Happy birthday to me … Had a little gathering last week to celebrate turning the big 5-0. Now I am looking forward to winter so I can cross country ski, which is my joy that just happens to be exercise.

I have not been making great food choices after our 5 lb challenge. However, I did sign up for a healthy living class that will be on Tuesday nights until my skiing starts. I am at least hoping I will meet some like minded ladies there that are also empty nesters. Maybe some in-person persuasion will encourage me to exercise more regularly.

Happy belated (?) Snowflake!!!

happy birthday snowflake, on birthdays one deserves to enjoy and relax a bit! May this special birthday be an inspiration to all we can accomplish in our fifties…

I am surprised to say, I have gotten to the point where on the days I don’t exercise it feels strange, and it now feels like a good habit that I previously never really had, I get to the gym 5 days a week for a 40 minute workout. Crazy work days with a crisis or two or a day where I had no sleep the previous night might keep me from exercising…

hit the 25 lb mark!

^^ Look at you!!! Congrats!

well…still struggling along…
Pretty much sticking to the new eating plan and feeling better for it (we wont talk about that bag of candy corn)
But the scale was not moving much…started adding just a bit of exercise into the day (50 stair steps every morning and night) and it seems to help!
I only down 4 pounds, but that is a start!
I am interested in the FitBit as well…anyone have it and recommend it?

Congrats Linds126.
Katie93mom-I am waiting for my Fitbit to arrive. It was on backorder at REI.
My Tuesday weigh in- same weight as last Wednesday. I am happy with that. I know I can get the scale to move downward if I stay somewhat on track.
Abasket-
I have never enjoyed exercising. When I was young my friends in HS and College called me the 100 lb weakling. Skin and bones and no muscle. I never felt athletic. I think that has stuck with me. I also have a genetic sacrum hip abnormality that has an effect on my ability to exercise. I play tennis once a week and try to walk a few other days.
I do try to have a stretching routine that I have from my PT that I try to do most mornings. I do counter pushups and planks. I gage my progress on how many I can do of each.
I don’t have a whole lots of vices to cut out. I don’t put cream or sugar in my coffee. I rarely drink alcohol. I don’t have chips or cookies in my house. I rarely snack between meals and rarely do I snack after dinner. I don’t drink soft drinks or any sugar drinks.
One thing that I did cut out which I think helped a ton is I have cut fast food down to just a few times a year.
Snowflake- lets start another month long challenge.

I don’t have a FitBit but I know lots of people on CC do - someone should start a FitBit thread where you can share ideas, # of steps, etc!!!

Mom60, sounds like while you may not enjoy exercise, you are getting a good bit of it. :)

abasket- I know what is good for me. My Mom died young and was overweight and suffered from diabetes. I want to have mobility and be able to do all that I want to do and not be limited by physical conditions that are within my control. I know that there are and will be things I can’t control but I know enough to know that all is easier when we are not carrying around extra pounds.
Plus I live with an exercise fanatic!

To everyone: what keeps you from exercise? - list your top 2 or 3 reasons.

Pain & exhaustion.
Im recovering from my knee replacement quite nicely, but aches & pain from the fibromyalgia & arthritis affects my stamina & motivation.
Im still walking the dog alot- but only on level ground.
If only he could take water aerobics with me, I am afraid to leave him more than 90 min as he is an anxious chewer.

Google just gave their employees FitBits and they’re all in a step challenge. My D works there and tells me it is really motivating the employees to get moving.

Happy birthday, snowflake and congrats lindz!

Well, thanks to stress I’ve lost 3 lbs. Unfortunately nibbling on the halloween candy is also a stress reducer
But I am not feeling quite as uncomfortable in some clothes as I had been. I got to within 1.5 lb of my goal before my birthday party this summer, but only for a few days because the celebration (birthday, fathers day, DS#1’s birthday and start of his new job, our anniversary…) were all around that same time and source of continued celebrating that added on the lbs.

Good news, its do-able. I am 6 lbs from goal, 4.5 from where I was this summer. I kept off the other weight I’d lost, thank heavens, but it was creeping back up, and I am short, so a few lbs makes a big difference. For better or for worse, the next few months will continue to be stressful (though one of my office computers getting fried yesterday with a boatload of very expensive programs on it compounded things). Arggh.

I’ve been reading through this thread the past couple of days. It’s very motivating. I joined WW two weeks ago and last week I was down 4.6 lbs. I’m going to get weighed in a couple of hours. I know I won’t be close to last week’s weight loss. Hubby’s doing the diet with me. Our excuses are that I’ve been dealing with colon cancer and he’s had both hips replaced this past year. That makes us sound ancient, but we’re both 54. We could both lose about forty pounds.

What keeps me from exercise? Too much time on CC!

I have found having exercise equipment at home a big help for when going to the gym just seems like too much time and effort.

What keeps me from exercising? Getting home late from work.
What makes me exercise? My dog hounding me from the moment I enter the back gate! He will go drag my tennis shoes out of the closet and bring them to me :-).

Haha I need to get my husband a dog!

Seriously, I know of several people who credit having a dog with saving their health.

Congrats to the losers and HB, snowflake!

Whenever I head out with the dog on a cold, rainy day I think about how I would not be doing it were it not for my hairy hound. We “escort” my husband into his office every morning, about a 2 mile round trip. I think having that relaxed time for a morning check in is also good for the marriage.

Thanks for the birthday wishes, you sweet people. I wish I hadn’t eaten so many salted carmel chocolate candies last night, though. We had a nice gathering and it was supposed to be no gifts, but a few people sneaked some treats and some wine into a gift pile. The good news is my weight has held steady, and my HDL cholesterol is 83, but my overall cholesterol as of a screening at work this morning was 213. More motivation to ciput out the junk.

What keeps me from exercising, working too late, and having a lazy dog. : ) He doesn’t care if we take a walk or just snuggle when I get home. Hubby does not motivate me, so he is for sale.

If you work, is it possible to get some exercise during a break or lunchtime??? I generally eat lunch at my desk, but often will take 20mins somewhere in the day to go out for a brisk walk - but I am on a campus so I can do that. Or 20 mins of exercise in the morning before work- an exercise DVD or treadmill?? Or exercise both days on the weekend and one or two during the week?? Gotta get it in somehow- be creative!!

You can send me the salted caramels. They are my absolute favorite.
