Weight Loss for Dummies

I have had the most frustrating experience trying to get back on track. I developed a cold on Christmas Eve, and have been sick ever since. We are going away at the end of January, so I’d like very much to get back to exercising and eating properly but it’s been hard to focus on that when I can’t sleep and only want to drink tea and eat toast! I’m really hoping to at least start walking on the treadmill for 30 minutes a day this week and work slowly back to my regular routine. That assumes, of course, I can stop coughing like a lunatic! Good luck everyone as we begin a new year…

I am working to get the eating under control, getting caught up at home during our week away. I have to figure out working the exercise in to be enjoyable daily routine. Once I start exercising and seeing results, I will be hooked.

I am trying to go to bed earlier or on time so I am not as tempted to snack. Brought my own lunch to work today, and am on day 4 of 4 of my 30 day exercise challenge. No weight loss yet, but don’t expect a shift until later this week. I will be very happy with one pound missing and content with 0.5 lbs.

I’ve added one small core strengthening to my day- not much but I do a wall chair sit while I’m brushing my teeth with my electric toothbrush. I figure every bit helps.

^That’s a good idea. I should do more core things daily. I hate them all. How hard is it to take a minute to do a plank? But I manage to avoid them all too often!

Made it to the Y last night for the first time since before Christmas (me and everybody else, the place was packed!). Ugh. Everything was hard but I got through it. Started tracking food and exercise on my phone. So I’m back in the saddle. I just need to stay there and keep riding!

This cold is still getting the best of me, but it has also made everything I eat taste metallic, so I’ve been pretty good on the food front. I thought I’d be able to start easy exercise this week, but I’m still way too worn out…so my trip “back on the wagon” will have to wait a few more days.

Hi everyone!

SOSconcern,
The results stalled :frowning: I broke through the plateau but then took a little holiday over new years, and then got talked into ordering something at a restaurant (I should have stuck with what I planned to order) that turned out to be good but VERY greasy. My stomach has been unhappy for 2-3 days, but the scale isn’t reflecting the cutback in consumption. I have been working out 3-4x/week which is a LOT for me. I will try to go later but I have some work that is on a deadline. I was also snacking at night, though it was healthy stuff (vegetables, or vegs and some tzatzaki). I am tryying to get back onto the no snacking after dinner routine.

VaBluebird, Amen to the “last third”! I joined the Y three years ago when both parents’ health took a nosedive. I’m doing everything I can to avoid that unhappy ending. (Though it was never about looks I must admit to buying ten or fifteen sleeveless shirts now that my arms are a little more shapely. ;))

My protein-heavy breakfast is muesli made with 1/4 cup rolled oats, 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt, 1/3 cup almond milk, 1/2 scoop protein powder and a little cardamom and cinnamon. I make a quadruple batch and split it among four pint canning jars; that leaves me room to stir in a small banana, berries or some other fruit. When I make it “to go” I mix in some raisins or other dried fruit.

I weighed exactly the same (to the tenth of a pound) this January 1 as a year ago. That’s a win for me.

H is weighing himself every day. I know for many this is counter-productive (too discouraging) but it seems to work for him.

Somehow this year is starting out with stress - maybe because MIL/FIL are doing poorly.

Looking forward to the football game on Monday too. DD is in the UA Million Dollar Band.

6 days after H began his ‘crash dieting’, he has already lost 10 lb. He is out for a run now (has the week off from work) and wants me to make him a tuna sandwich with jalapeno slices. He is using some of my tricks (like hot tea) but I am trying to talk him into having a hot bowl of oatmeal in the morning. He would not be able to do his dieting if he was diabetic, due to the long periods w/o food. He was 223, and his goal is 200. He is 213 now (he is 6’3") so he is fine with his weight and goal. Some of his weight gain was over last 3 months - I noticed he just kind of let himself go. He has new motivation I guess.

With just the two of us, I don’t have to spend hardly any time in the kitchen - just think up ways to mix up my low calorie meals to be ‘satisfying’.

I am avoiding the scale - it doesn’t motivate me. I stick to the plan, and over time I will be successful as I have in the past.

I sort of agree with another that you get certain food tastes out of your system and then you can avoid them better.

@1moremom, that is a win!

@SOSConcern, that’s great that your DH is on the healthy bandwagon. Although it would make me nuts to see my husband lose 10 lbs in a week. It takes me a couple months to lose that much. My DH is naturally very thin but has put on a little weight so he worries about it. I’m glad he is taking care of his health but he is so thin it makes me laugh when he complains about the weight.

And I’m more like you, stick to the plan and I know it will work. I check in with the scale about once a month.

10 lbs in a week? What did he do?

How often do you weigh yourself? I weigh once a week.

Rarely. Once every couple of months maybe? I rely on the mirror and the fit of my clothes.

H pretty much was on like a ‘starvation’ diet - ate maybe one small meal a day. Since his metabolism is not 3500 cal/day (which is what it takes to lose a lb) and he did consume some calories - 600/day maybe? 700/day something under 1000 calories for sure.

Some I am sure is ‘fluid’. Once he gets more exercise, muscle is heavier than fat. But he will be healthier.

I am avoiding the scale, but I may weigh myself once or twice a month.

I am trying to have him incorporate healthier eating…however he is an engineer, so he has to decide for himself (even though I am a nurse and have also met with a dietitian).

I weigh myself most days. It’s interesting to see how much variation there is. At least plus or minus three pounds. If I pick the right days a week apart I might think I’d gained or lost a lot. I’m trying to up the exercise and get other people to help eat the leftover sweets from Christmas. There’s an unopened panettoni that I’m not touching until ds’s girlfriend comes for a weekend, ditto for two hunks of cookie dough that are in the fridge.

H jogged 3.5 miles - he said he did’t ‘push’ himself. I am sure he enjoyed his sandwich. Now he is watching some TV before he goes back to his hobby activity.

I will see slow progress, but progress will come for me.

Sending encouragement out to all on this thread.

It’s raining and I’m stuck inside with the dogs. I would love to have a fresh baked cookie about now. Luckily I have no sweets in the house.
When I’m actively trying to lose I weigh myself daily. Like Mathmom I find the fluctuation interesting.

I read or heard on my Sirius XM Doctor channel this past week that daily weighing has been positively correlated to weigh loss and weight maintenance. So, I am moving back to the daily weigh ins so I can track the daily fluctuations. I haven’t been and I have gained, so the daily weigh in on back on my list in the morning.
