Weight Loss for Dummies

Watched the PBS, show In defense of food, michael pollan - which inspired me to eat more veggies.
The next day all recipes sent me this recipe. I made it, ate this mostly for several days, enjoyed it,too.
Two goals achieved- more veggies, and I felt lighter

JYM,

my call to the gym is all my buddies there. I know most of my class people by name. I have my fav’s that I like to work out near; they are younger than me and keep me going. There is such a feeling of warmth. I went to someone’s son’s Bar Mitzvah, and we have a crew that go out monthly to celebrate birthdays. When someone’s FIL died, we contributed for a tree in Israel.

Now I have a dilemna. I usually go to evening classes, but I always make the Friday aM class at West gym. Now, one of my fav instructors, called me today to say she is hired to teach Friday AM class in East gym. I want to support her, but I will miss all my buddies at West gym on a Friday AM. Third world problem.

Did I mention that I gave away my home machines? I still have the weights and bike, but I am definitely a gym person.

I don’t mind if people are on the equipment for a half hour but when they are on it longer I get irked. On my cardio days I do 30 minutes on the treadmill and 30 on a bike or elliptical then head home.

H is stuck at plateau, but he will push through quickly. He ate a banana this afternoon. Now is eating the lower cal potato soup I made Saturday, and two small ears of corn on the cob. Tomorrow, he will take two pieces of fruit to work, and walk at lunch. Not sure what I will have ready tomorrow night - have some good Chicken Quesadilla Soup (if he decides he can eat that…). And we have the excitement of the National College Football Championship game Monday night.

@bookworm maybe you can mix it up so you can also develop some friendships at the other gym.

Whoa, @SOSConcern , you have a lot going on! Good luck with the job possibilities, congrats on the weight loss, and am glad your daughter is fine (cars can be fixed). If you are looking for more exercise, my car could stand to be cleaned out  It sounds, though, like your DH might not be eating enough! A banana, soup, corn. He’ll starve!

Bookworm,
What will you do about your class vs your instructor? E vs W? I used 2 different gyms (one is a little closer, but it’s grodier and that’s the one with the tvs on the ceiling that show 3 channels (fox news, sports and infomercials). I go at different times, and don’t do classes, so while yes, I run into people I know at each gym. I don’t have the core group of buddies that you do. That sounds wonderful!!

Southjerseychessmom-
Do you recommend that PBS show?

momofthreeboys- Is there any delicate way, short of standing next to the equipment, to remind someone that they have overstayed their welcome on a piece of equipment?

I had a nice ahi tuna salad with friends for dinner tonight, but some popcorn seemS to be jumping into my mouth here at home tonight

Good job on the weight loss SOSConcern!
I need to go back and check out those recipes! Thanks.

to SouthJerseyChessMom, thanks for that link. That soup looks really good and filling.

^ I made the cabbage soup with V8 juice (apparently this recipe must have been a fat burning weight watchers soup from long ago)
Secret when I served it I put some cottage cheese in it for protein and creamy texture

And, Jym I do recommend the PBS show - it’s on demand now here in New Jersey

Good morning at the gym. Well it was barely morning, got kind of a late start, but 45 minutes or so of weight bearing stuff and half and hour on the elliptical.

DH and I decided that after our ski trip we’ll look for a new trainer. I don’t find the current one, though he is certainly a nice guy, motivating, and when I am there I don’t want him watching the tv monitor reporting sports scores. He can do that on his own time.

Hope you are feeling better, fallgirl.

Fallgirl, feel better. I got that cold on Christmas Eve and have been battling it ever since. While it has been a disaster for my fitness routine - I haven’t consciously been able to get back to it since - my fluid intake has been gargantuan and I think it’s helped my skin! Be good to yourself.

Whoa, runners mom, that’s almost 3 weeks. Are you sure it in’t more than just a cold?

Yes I know how ‘lame’ my H’s weight loss routine is, but in a few weeks he will hit his goal and then be a little healthier in his caloric and food consumption. I think his body is responding to ‘starvation’ and reducing his metabolic burn. I think he also wants to wear the quick weight loss ‘badge’. He definitely is “man from Mars”.

My timing was good at the dealer body shop, and got the write up for vehicle repair next week. Then I drove the 20 miles to TN to buy 6 powerball tickets (don’t play, it won’t pay) - AL is one of 6 states w/o lottery, but a Republican is going to introduce it in legislature, and maybe it will go this time. I figure with 94% chance that there will be a winning number at the next draw (22% miss chance at last draw), now is the time. Feel a little foolish doing the drive, but won’t if I win! Avoided buying a breakfast biscuit or other such high calorie thing and got a diet lemon-aid at Chick fil A, then made my coffee and oatmeal when back home.

Have to constantly remind one-self to make good choices all through the day…

One hour Zumba class. Living La Vida Loca! LOL.

I’m not a regular here, but I’m trying to be…happy to join with others on the same path.

I managed to go to Bikram yoga Saturday and Sunday, and to the gym on Sunday. I was so sore this morning. I am only just returning to exercise after my hysterectomy. My problem with exercise is that I cannot get myself to the gym or yoga after work. I just feel exhausted. Maybe I will set the goal to get out the door once this week after work. And then build upon that little success. Because I actually am happy once I’m there.

Food-wise–because of my recent cancer and my concern about a recurrence, I am trying to move towards more of a plant based diet. Initially I am trying to eat vegan 4-5 days a week. I like meat, eggs, and cheese, so it would be hard for me to completely give them up.

I’m also tracking on myfitnesspal. I gained weight after my surgery, so I’m hoping to at least be at my presurgery weight in a month which is when I see my doctor next. Then I’ll start working on getting the rest off!

Thanks jym, I did speak to my doctor about one week in when it looked like bronchitis so I finished a course of antibiotics. The cough, however, is lingering…I am much improved and can now sleep at night but it’s hanging on, and on, and on…this too shall pass!

Runnersmom, I tend to have the lingering cough thing whenever I have a resp. illness.

On the food subject, if any of you shop at Harris-Teeter, holy moly they have a 3 pound bag of Sunkist navel oranges for $1.47!!! AND…they are fabulously delicious.
I love it when I find myself craving good food!

Welcome, GCmom! So sorry about your CA and surgery, but it sounds like you are on the mend and getting back on track. One step at a time. Congrats on the weekend exercise! We’ve all overdone it and paid the price, but you’ll feel better and hopefully find a regimen that works for you. I totally get the after work fatigue. Somehow our cars just drive themselves to the house!

VaBluebird- yay on the Zumba and the oranges!! A Sprouts opened near us and they had 5Lb of cuties for $3 so I am trying to make that my snack.

I was hungry after working out with the trainer ( last time-- will be in the market for a new one) so cooked and ate 3 chicken legs (took the skin off after cooking) but was surprised to see that each is about 200 calories. Ouch.

Hope you are one the mend, runners mom.

I bought 2 or of very warm and soft socks for skiing today. One is supposed to be for DH, but… I might have to decide if the larger ones really are too large for me ;0. they are really warm, and were on sale at Tj maxx of all places. I paid $8 for one or and $9.99 for the other https://www.heatholders.com/

OK - so I have that delicious home-made Quesadilla Soup at home. No H came home “is there any of the tuna noodle left”? That was eaten up 1 day after making it last week (I use a large bag of noodles, a double can of cream of mushroom soup, and three larger cans of tuna). H ate some pretzels, and a fairly good sized serving of the tuna noodle. Plenty left for him for maybe two or three days…Hope BAMA can dominate the second half of this football game!!
