@raclut, that seems like a sensible approach. I love bread too. Many years ago, for about a year, I cut it out all together, but I really missed it and then ended up eating too much when I put it back in my diet. So now I just eat a slice with breakfast, if kids are around to help eat it, I’ll make garlic bread very occasionally and I’ll eat it at restaurants. (We don’t eat out more than once a month, so not too much. My husband is more anti-grains/carbs than I am, so for a while I wasn’t using pasta, or potatoes, or bulgur or most of the new grains that have appeared since the anti-gluten mania. However I’ve got a 23 yo living with us now - and I don’t think he needs to be on our eating plan.
I find I’m okay if I have strict rules for the food I want to cut out for the most part, but want to eat occasionally. Fried food only at restaurants. Cookies only at Christmas, or Girl Scout cookies or when the boys are visiting. Stuff like that.
I loved baking but have stopping doing that. My DD (19) has a sweet tooth but she is a skinny growing girl.
Nothing sticks on her vs me who just gains weight just looking at food.
I am making a conscious effort to cut on the bread. I have this book called, “eat this and not that” which has been a real help when grocery shopping. I try to shop the perimeter of the store. My routine gets really messed up when daughter is home on breaks and then I don’t feel like my normal self. When she is home I have to have a variety of things at home in the kitchen cabinets and fridge otherwise she says, “Mom there nothing to eat here.” She doesn’t see the healthy stuff in the fridge
Overall she doesn’t eat poorly it’s just she likes to have her treats available in case she wants it.
I really feel we don’t know what truly is in the foods we eat. Everything seems to be altered and artificial. When I look at the grocery circular I struggle to find the items on sale that I need because most of the sale is on the processed foods. For this reason I really like shopping at farmers markets during the spring and summer.
Oh I did order 4 boxes of girls scout cookies from my two nieces so that they wouldn’t feel bad. I am sure daughter would be glad to eat them but I heard that they can be donated to the troops.
I was just looking at it. It is very strict. For a vegetarian it would be difficult to do because it says no legumes.
This might be able to be done short term but I don’t think I could do this permanently.
I love GS cookies and supporting the scouts. I buy them and take the unopened boxes to work. I take out 2 cookies for myself and the rest of the box goes in the break room. By the time I have time to go into the break room, the box is long gone!
I did a very modified version of whole 30 to kickstart my diet, but refused to give up artificial sweetener for my coffee and I ate some cheese and a few nuts. I ate mostly fruits, veggies, fish, eggs and chicken, but I miss my carbs and cheeses. I could not eat like that all the time. I am back to mostly fruits and vegetables, with protein as well and some small snacks that aren’t allowed. I lost 7 lbs. in a month. Am getting back on track to lose more, but not that restrictive. To me, it’s a way of life, not about being “on” vs “off” a diet.
After just spending 2 hours on the phone (2 calls were disconnected) with the incompetent boobs at Kohl’s, I am ready for the gym. speaking of boobs, I have some good news/bad news. I ordered a front zip sports bra when I started the weight loss. It ran small and I really had to fight to close it and it felt like a straight jacket. Now, it fits. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not-- but that’s where I tend to lose weight first
Feel better!!
DH came with me to the gym. We then made a big salad, guacamole, asparagus, sweet potatoes and a T bone steak. Needless to say we have a lot of leftovers.
I finally managed to hit a 10,000 step day according to my iPhone (actually 11,200 steps). I did it by spending five hours at Safari Park outside San Diego. I can’t imagine spending the time to get that many steps in an regular day. I also can’t figure out how DH had 2,000 more steps when we were together all day. I was happy to see that my physical therapy for my ankle, which has included hip exercises, made a notable difference for my walking and standing today.
And let me add that a four month old tiger cubs is absolutely adorable.
Good job, Marilyn! DH and I had different readings on the iPhone app. Our legs are different lengths and I take more steps than he does. If that’s true for you too, that should mean that your would have more steps, not less, if your legs are shorter.
I’m short-waisted so my legs are relatively long but DH is six inches taller than me. Possibly his phone in his pocket registered steps during the tram tour but my phone in my purse didn’t. I went to the restrooms more than him so that should have added to my steps!
@jym626 I will do anything to avoid having to go to the doctor and pay medical bills.
I am realizing that I’d better take care of myself. Better late than never.
I want to buy some new spring clothes that fit well so that is also an incentive.
I’m a work in progress.
@carachel2 – you asked if anyone is doing Whole30. I started the day my son left after the holidays and was on it with 100% compliance for 16 days until I went to visit him in San Francisco for a long weekend. It’s really hard to stay compliant when traveling because even though I ordered smartly – grilled vegetables or grilled chicken, etc, the restaurant seemed to add butter or sweeteners to things. I do have to say that starting around day 8 I felt great – lots of energy and happy. I’ve also lost 5 pounds already. Even with the missteps in SF, I’m back on it and will do it for a full 30 days from here and slowly add things back in my diet. The hardest thing for me was not having cream in my coffee! But it’s not so bad now and I definitely feel better having been off sugar.
^ is there a book for the Whole 30 plan? I’m looking for a bit of structure to “jump start” a 8-10 lb weight loss.
I have a book from library called the “F factor Diet” because someone highly recommended it during a tv interview. All I know a couple years ago a cardio told me to increase fiber significantly to reduce ldl- two birds with one stone, lbs and ldl.
But, two of you, Jym and blackyeyedsusan make me interested in Whole30. Atkins has worked for me in the past, for short term loss.
( son getitng married in July so I have a goal- motivation high)
