Weight Loss for Dummies

Weekly check-in

Food: 3 non-vegan days (goal is 1-2)
3 days with processed sugar (goal is 1-2). I don’t feel terrible about my week as a whole. 2 of the non-vegan days were vegetarian and only included a little cheese and egg. And the processed sugar was not a sugar bender, just an item on each day.

Exercise: yoga: 0 (goal is 3)
Cardio: 1 (goal is 3)
Strength: 1 (goal is 3)
No excuses. I need to up that. I am getting a new Fitbit this week, so I will add a daily step goal.

Weight loss: 1 lb. (total of 11 since 1/1)

I ate really unhealthily last night and am feeling it today. I need to remind myself how much better I feel when I’m eating right.

WOW GCmom! Fabulous!! Congrats!!

I took a total food holiday yesterday. Went to a brunch and then an incredible 7 course dinner with wine pairing that was divine. Plan to get back in the saddle today.

Jym626, I think food holidays are necessary!

Yesterday was Christmas, GCmom!!

@GCMom, you are doing great! Wow. I haven’t been able to lose 11 pounds in a month since I was about 30 yeaars old! That is amazing!

@MichaelINKat, I also do weigh only once a week, same day, first thing in the morning, naked after going pee. I tried to switch to weighing every day and was too forgetful so I said oh heck, once a week is okay. Thanks for weighing in (ha,ha) on the subject for us!

The number one thing I have tried like crazy to avoid for decades are sweets, or maybe I should say sweets. Luckily for me, my dh has never liked sweets and we didn’t want the boys to develop sweet tooths (teeth?) either so it was easy to keep if off premises! And eventually, wonder of wonders, I lost my sweet tooth pretty much.
Nowadays, it has become bread and similar that I have to avoid. We buy only high fiber bread and I have usually only two slices a day. And let me tell you, I love bread and all its variations. Any kind, any time. So, I’m hoping I’ll come to feel the same way about bread eventually, that it just simply is no longer appealing. I never did eat much pasta or rice. Potatoes are still in my diet maybe once or twice a week. Gave up processed stuff long ago (except for whole wheat Ritz crackers) and gave up cereal.
It’s a challenge/struggle. Every single day. I am trying like crazy to avoid diabetes.
Interestingly enough, my TSH levels are high so I’m going tomorrow to see about that. I’m sure it’ll be more blood work first to get a definitive answer as to why but I guess I’ll be going on thyroid meds. I wonder if I will feel like I have a bit more energy. Anyone have an experience with that?

@VaBluebird I’ve only lost this quickly because it’s recently gained. I had surgery in October and gained after that, through the whole holiday season. I have a doctor’s appointment in a week and I was hoping to be at my pre surgery weight. But I’m still 4 lbs away, so I won’t quite make it. But I’m still very happy to be making progress!

I see a doc Tuesday pre-colonoscopy. That will be a ‘jump start’ on weight loss.

On another note, I talked to a friend who works in a company I want to hire in, and there is an opening in that dept, so she is going to put in a good word for me - which should help me hopefully get an interview. Have lots to keep me busy and hopefully with paid employment soon. I even felt so good on Friday I was doing housework. If I have a job, I know I can increase my activity level, structure my eating, and lose weight.

DD graduates from college in April - that will be a big accomplishment - since she is BSN - here is hoping she will get a job where she is pre-cepting.

Making healthy transitions in life.

Lots of good news, SOSConcern! Fingers crossed for all. And when you do your “prep”, use a straw and very cold water. Get that stuff in the back of your throat. Easier to choke down.

Well, enjoyed a diet holiday this past weekend. Back to the grindstone. Am meeting a friend for sushi lunch, though. Guess it will be sashimi for me.

SOSConcern, best wishes!
Being out of work was very depressing for me, all 9 times that I was out of work. I know exactly how you feel,…I myself may feel this way when I retire, retirement scares me a lot!

Zumba’d. Tired!

And yes, I have to go on Synthroid for my underactive thyroid. I do hope it perks me up a bit.

Still not brave enough to get back on the scale, and we did decide to take a trainer holiday for this month. So I went to the gym today. Ran short on time but did spend 45 min (30 on treadmill- about 2.2 mi) and then assorted upper/lower body and core stuff.

VaBluebird- I love bread too. I find even when I avoid it bread is still appealing. I have to really limit myself. It is a slippery slope. two of my favorite things are a toasted bagel with both salted butter and cream cheese and toasted sourdough bread with butter.
I’m going to try weighing myself just twice a week. Monday AM to gage the weekend and Friday AM to see how I did during the week.
My week in review- exercised 5 out of 7.
PT exercises just 3 days. Need to be more diligent
Ate really well all week. Friday is my splurge day and I had 2 fish tacos which were delicious. I ate the chips that came with them even though I told myself I would just eat a couple. Also had a small serving of cobbler on Saturday night with a spoon of ice cream. Because I need to lose about 9 more lbs I’m not having any snacks or sugar treats.

A serving of dark chocolate covered almonds or cashews is my go to sweet when I’m at my goal weight.
I have a lunch date Wednesday with a friend. That will be my challenge for this week

Bread? Who said bread?? One of the reasons I am not weighing in is we stopped at one of our favorite bakery/markets and one of the things that jumped into our cart was fresh raisin walnut bread. Yum! Its already gone!

Today was trainer day. And I did the bike since I was at the gym.

I 'broke even" on the Florida trip. Despite a lot of eating out and a lot of wine, I walked enough so that I didn’t gain any weight. Didn’t lose any either, but I didn’t expect to!

I got a lot of steps in today with a treadmill walk and a good walk with the dogs. And did my weight exercises too today! This is good as I was up some after a pot luck dinner Sunday night. I knew it was going to be hard for me to eat well but I was careful during the day and made much better choices on what to eat than I usually do! Hopefully I’ll get to try some yoga tomorrow.

Great news @fallgirl . I need to get started walking regularly again.

Well the prep is called “Suprep Bowel Prep Kit”. I am clear liquids the day before.

H found out they have new standards re his situation - the GI doc that retired said 10 years at H’s last colonoscopy, but the new GI doc said because he has had a polyp - he needs a 5 year colonoscopy, which is this summer. H was not excited about that news, but he knows to put up with it. We know too many people who have had colon cancer.H’s dad had a lot of diverticulitis and polyps; however H is eating a healthier diet.

I had forgotten how young and handsome the GI guy is. Super nice too.

Talking about CR*P, I got an email from the prospective company HR that “the senior management team has reevaluated the needs of the dept and regret to inform you that the search has been suspended…” Back to the job search drawing board…

Yes our co-pay for specialist went from $45 to $60. Minor nudging up. Now our “long term meds for chronic conditions” needs to go to mail in (90 day supply refill), but they seem to be free (otherwise if we use retail pharmacy, it is full price).

GI doc said we had a pretty restricted approved drug formulary (he had the prep kit as a drug rep sample so I got that free) - I just asked what kit they might have at this office or their other office. He knew with all my medical treatment I could use a $$ break (5 years ago, when I went to fill the script for the prep - I balked at the pharmacy price and called their office back for something more reasonable, and I got office drug sample).

Speaking of bread, I had some today. I’m trying to cut down and decided to read labels and make better choices.
I tried Kontos Greek Lifestyle flatbread. One piece has 15 grams of protein and 180 calories.
8 grams of dietary fiber and 2 grams of sugar. It comes in a four pack.

Saw it for the first time in the supermarket and it tasted pretty good.
