Weight Loss for Dummies

NYMomof2 - That recommendation came from me. I am so glad you liked her recipes! She’s also a wonderful person in the blogosphere, so I am way thrilled we’re supporting her here. Go 2 vegetable initiative!

Distance runners often have pretty good (if rather slimmer) physiques too. Here are a couple of shots of Kara Goucher. The one where she is waving the flag was taken after she had just won a bronze medal in the 10K at the World Championships:

My running injuries were in my 30s - I had several but I learned and
recovered from them. They had to do with overuse to fast, and
equipment. My modern injuries are from tennis but they are declining
with weight loss and changes in equipment and technique. I’ve never
changed my running technique.

Modern information technology can provide a good fix here. I keep track
of my shoe mileage on a spreadsheet. I understand that some running
websites allow you to track your mileage and your shoe mileage, similar
to LiveStrong’s dailyplate.

This is a common cause of plantars fasciitis and chondrolmalacia in
tennis players. Poor choice of racquets and strings and improper
technique causes a lot of tennis elbow and shoulder problems too.

Their arms look anorexic. Too thin. Nice quads, though!

idad, be very careful about what you say around that lady. Those “anorexic” arms can deliver a mighty punch  She looks just fine to me. :)

I think swimmers have the best looking bodies, but that is just my personal opinion.

Your typical runner isn’t a sprinter though and the sprinter gets
muscles through weight training instead of the sport itself.

I see in her profile that she also did short-distance running and
perhaps she did weight training for those events.

Let’s take a look at the top ten WTA (Womens Tennis Association)
players and we’ll add in Venus and Serena Williams who would most
likely be in the top ten if they hadn’t been out with injuries for the
last year. Then we’ll take a look at the top ten ATP (Association of
Tennis Professionals) players, without shirts of course.

These physiques aren’t outliers for tour players, except for Serena
Williams. I have never seen a stronger female tennis player

Thank you, alumother! I’m looking forward to trying more of her recipes.

Speaking of tennis players and fat loss, where’s the pix of Jillian Michael’s replacement as the trainer on The Biggest Loser, Anna Kournikova.

Anna K wasn’t all that great a tennis player but she received an outsized amount of media attention because of her looks. She was in the top 8 a long time ago but never won a WTA singles title.

So we are at the end of week two of the thread (I think)! It seems that most everyone is at least more aware of what they are putting in their mouth and trying to be more active. Baby steps, right?

Congratulations to everyone who has lost or maintained. If you don’t fit into that category, don’t get discouraged. We will need your support on the weeks that we falter or gain and YOU lose!

I like the thin runners’ arms a lot better than those tennis players. Some of those ladies are scary. They look like they could punch out Mike Tyson.

Most people’s blood cholesterol levels are not affected much by dietary cholesterol, but some people’s blood cholesterol levels are. It is rather hard to know which category you are in without careful experimentation (measure blood cholesterol before and after adding dietary cholesterol to your same diet before and after).

Re: runner / swimmer / tennis player / etc. body

Perhaps the different opinions may be based on whether one finds upper body muscle to be desirable. I have noticed that men are more likely to find upper body muscle to be desirable than women (or perhaps it is that people tend to find upper body muscle to be more attractive on men than women?) – a lot of women (but also some men) say that they do not want to lift weights because they do not want to get “too big” (too muscular).

Even if most women were trying to bulk up, they would find it practically impossilble to do. The hormones aren’t right for most women to add significant muscle mass. Heck, it’s not easy for most men (without steroids). It takes more than moderate weight lifting for bulky muscles. It takes intensive lifting and eating massive calories and protein.

The only way to “bulk up” is to get bigger by eating a signficant surplus of calories. At that point, you will either get fat or get muscular.

True, but a lot of people seem to believe that lifting any significant amount of weights will make them “too big”, not realizing the muscular athletes have to work very hard to get muscular. It is very hard to convince them that they won’t accidentally get “too big” if they lift weights.

… or swim 3-4 days a week, heck, even 5-6 days a week. My little niece was a very promising swimmer who enjoyed swimming summer league, but my sister did not allow her to join a year-round swim team because “swimmers get big shoulders”. Now this kid spends hours glued to her computer wasting her life away on Facebook. Very sad.

^^^
The irony is that a program of intensive large-muscle/whole body strength training (even bodyweight stuff like pushups or chinups) is the best exercise for shedding fat, getting leaner, and maintaining your weight. It really should be the starting point in a fat loss exercise program – the thing you do if you don’t have time for anything else.

I’ve “bulked up” from 250 pounds to 160 pounds doing strength training workouts three days a week.

DH just made me a very healthy breakfast in bed! Egg-beaters omlet, english muffin, small fresh fruit salad and coffee. What a guy. Diet resumes tomorrow-- 6/27 :)

It’s very confusing but as ucbalumnus pointed out - cholesterol in food doesn’t necessarily translate into high blood cholesterol. For example, somewhere a long the way, eggs got an undeserving bad rap. Recent studies show that an egg a day (and in some studies up to 7 eggs a day) did not increase the risk of heart disease unless there was a pre-existing condition like diabetes. From WebMD:

Can I make a happy complaint? My sons now want to eat all my healthy food, creating more work for me!
