As for eating a hot dog without the bun…what do you do with the mustard and onions? (Went to the ball park last Saturday and held myself to a hot dog with bun, onion, mustard, and water…really wanted a frozen lemonade and carmel corn, but just the sound of those items made my sugar rise.)

abasket- to answer the question. I have been adopting many of these guidelines for the last yr. I find that I go in phases. I have found I am “cheating” at times but find it much easier to have a few “bad” days and get right back on track. When I reduce the bad carbs I feel better. Thinner, less bloated and more energy. That is my incentive to continue. I could see myself continuing to live this way without feeling like I am missing something. Now when I do have a peanut butter cookie I savor it. I also find that if I am going to stray I want it to be worth it. Fresh cut fries from a local cafe or one of their desserts. My biggest change is I have not set foot in a fast food place in 18 months.
I still don’t love to exercise. CC and the health related threads have been the driving force in getting me out of my door.

I think that is the right way to look at it. To deny ANY splurges would make life not much fun - not to mention counterproductive. If you have a special indulgence once in a while, I think you’d be more likely to “be good” the rest of the time.

Just got back from a business trip to Denver…I tried to be keep up the new low carb bit, and for the most part succeeded, except for when I… a) had a hotdog with a bun at Coors Field (oh and 2 Coors Light’s), and b) discovered Freddy’s Steak Burgers. We’ll ignore the waffle since it had fresh berries on it… Time to get back to it now…

One thing I did find, though, when a co-worker wanted to go to a chain sub place for lunch (Jimmy Johns?), they had an “Un-wich” which was the sandwich in wrap form, except the wrap was lettuce! And…quite delicious! So I made myself one at the deli bar at work today. I might have a new favorite!!

I can report on mashed broccoli with horseradish. It was quite tasty, but aesthetically–it was troubling. Remember mashed peas baby food? It looked like that.

We’re big fans of JJ’s Unwich. My husband and I like to split the Gargantuan. I’ve been doing low carb for 5 months this weekend and I don’t see ever going back to high carbing. I feel so much better now. I have cheat foods on occasion but like everyone else said, they’d better be darn good cheat foods. I had some fries last night with truffle salt (worth the cheat) and woke up this morning with aching arms and legs which I now get with too many carbs. Now that I know that’s what’s causing my various aches and pains, I have a lot of motivation to not eat them.

Dinner was late tonight. I’d made a lentil soup, and it took longer for the lentils to cook than I’d expected. While waiting, starving, I ate a piece of French bread that my husband had brought home. Then I had the soup, probably about a cup. Now I have an awful stomach ache and feel as if I ate too much. It sounds like the famous carb bloat, but I’ve never had it before, or any stomach problems.

The French bread didn’t even taste good. Either it was a bad loaf, or I’ve lost my taste for it.

I think I OD’ed on fresh cherries during lunch, LOL. The season is just starting after a long delay due to the awful weather, and I’ve been itching to have some. I guess there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. :)

Making soup for dinner is a great idea! I think that’s what I’ll do tonight.

Well, I can top that. I had Chinese Food for dinner! I tried to stay with the meat and veggies and avoided the rice but the salt is doing me in. My fingers are swollen.

abasket- I think that whatever people choose to do to lose weight, your question is key.You have to enjoy what you eat. I have had a preference for organic foods, whole grains, veggies and whole foods since college. Haven’t eaten any meat except occasional seafood since I was 19. Post babies I decided to do WW- lost all the weight I wanted to, but- I found the processed food (ie 40 calorie a slice bread and “fake” salad dressings, etc.) unsatisfying on a permanent basis. I avoided even good fats, ate too many white carbs and gained the weight back over decades. I realize that WW may be very different now and different things work for different people anyways.
Two years ago lost all the weight in a different way. Eliminated all the "white " stuff, discovered I needed oatmeal for cholesterol health, eat healthy fats, only “real” food, lots of veggies, non fat dairy, protein and almost no bread or sweets. I am never “starving” or fighting cravings, no longer afraid of “blowing it”, can splurge for a big event (only want a few bites of a dessert now) and look forward to meals. It no longer consumes too much mental space. I started a regular exercise routine with the change in eating and really feel younger. This has allowed my weight to stay consistent. I finally understand- not a diet, a lifestyle.
I value this thread and look forward to trying the tips and recipes people are sharing.

Down a kilo this week. I’ve been eating vegetarian lunches, and we’ve had two vegetarian dinners this week, but I think it’s really just fewer calories and more exercise. (Not a lot more we are talking one or two mile walks and three visits to the gym.)

Hear, hear. That’s what I tell everyone I talk to who is “on a diet.” You can’t be “on a diet” because that suggests that at some point you’ll be “off the diet.” And you know what happens then . . . .

I can do about ten guy pushups and about forty on my knees.

The waist isn’t my problem. I’m pear shaped so all my problems are below the waistline. I have a thin waist and lumpy thighs…ugh.
Did a 5 mile bike ride this a.m. hoping to whittle the saddlebags.

DH and I had dinner w/ a bachelor friend last night who wanted to cook for us…grilled hot dogs, french fries slaw, baked beans. I couldn’t be rude so had a bunless hot dog w/ a little mustard, small serving of slaw and beans. Ate some watermelon when I got home.

Is watermelon a bad thing to eat? I really love watermelon.

^I’ve been wondering the same thing myself, so I just went on a carb counter website - watermelon is actually relatively low carb for a fruit. 11g per 1 cup. Watermelon is mostly water. I find it to be a good diuretic. Plan to have some this weekend! What’s the 4th of July without watermelon?
