Weight Loss for Dummies

LOL EPTR,
I didn’t think of that. The good news- I weigh probably only about 10 lbs more than when I married 27 years ago. That said, I was in better shape then, adn I am short, so 10 lbs makes a difference :(

I’m short, too. 5’1". When I got married I was, maybe 100 lbs, soaking wet. I won’t say what I am now but it ain’t that!

Being short is, in my opinion, a liability when it comes to weight. As you said, ten lbs. shows a lot on a petite frame. Losing weight often involves a very low calorie intake compared to people with more height to work with. Ughh!

Congratulations, EPTR and Youdon’tsay… jym, we want to see a photo when you get into that wedding dress!

My sympathies to you short ladies. Being tall is an advantage. My calorie allowance is quite generous. And I remember gaining 10 lbs in fertility treatments (I was thin my whole life until my pregnancy with S1 in my early 40’s) and I still looked fine.

Now there’s and idea for a thread-- us in our wedding dresses!! The way mine was styled, it probably would fit. The style is, however, a tad dated, though…

No way will I ever fit into my wedding dress! I would need to lose 15 more pounds and get some ribs removed. My first child who weighed 9 lbs. 4 oz. at birth would push on my ribs with his little feet to get more space and my ribcage never recovered. But if you’re posting pictures in your wedding dresses, I definitely want to see them! Maybe a new facebook group?

Please don’t flame me, ladies, but when we married over 30 years ago, I rented my wedding dress. Can you even do that anymore?

^ LOL,Never heard of it but it’s possible. I would have rented if I could. I bought mine for $140 (29 years ago) off a clearance rack. It’s been in a box in my attic for 29 yrs.
I have two sons. What will I ever do with the darn thing?

I’ve been at this weight loss thing seriously for about six months now. I’ve lost 31 pounds in that time and 38 pounds total since last year this time. I think my wedding dress in the attic might even be a little big on me today.

It’s mind over matter ladies. Stay strong. This thread is helping keep my feet to the fire.

Our homecoming court rented our dresses oh so many years ago. I bet you can still rent.

I think renting sounds like a great idea. My dress is also still in a box and my two boys will never wear it  It has long sleeves and a high neck so isn’t really what the girls are looking for right now even if I had someone who wanted to wear it.

Packmom and Izzie,
My dress was bought off the rack and had long sleeves an a high neck.
I think the alterations cost more than the dress ;-)

Mine was at my parents’ for many years, at least until both daughters passed me in height, so it would be of no use to them even if they liked the style. Mom donated it to a church organization that sent wedding attire to the poor.

One can rent designer gowns over the internet, so why not wedding dresses? My dress was street length, not fitted, and ugly so I no longer have it. I could probably get into it if the waist had elastic. Don’t remember.

I’m down at least a real pound or two from when I started maybe three weeks ago. Bathroom scale is weird and changes when I shift weight, so I can’t get too obsessive when I read it. I’m another shorty, 5’1", so five or ten pounds makes a big difference.

The 40th high school reunion is tonight. Wonder if I’ll recognize anyone, or if I will be recognized? My graduating class had something like 720 kids, so I didn’t know many of them even then. I was not super skinny in HS; I think I’ve been super skinny maybe two weeks in my adult life! So maybe I weighed five or ten pounds less in high school, but it sure was distributed differently!

Tonight, I will avoid the carbs; don’t want to bloat. Umm, except maybe a martini or two. No beer; too many carbs. Wine I can drink at home. I’m so pathetic; I’m wearing the same dress I wore at the 20th reunion. (I don’t get much use out of cocktail dresses. The style is super forgiving, obviously. The best part is the loose lace arms since my arms are fat as before but also flabby.)

My arms are more muscular than they were 27 years ago, and I weigh 20 pounds more, thanks to kids my rib cage expanded and thanks to breast feeding I am permanently bustier, so I doubt I’ll every fit in my wedding dress, but I’d love to try! Although it’s not particularly in style I still think it’s gorgeous. It was a 1930s antique I found in a consignment shop - very simple - ivory satin, v neck, beading at the around the midsection, a million buttons down the back, long sleeves and a slight train. It looked like something Katherine Hepburn might have worn.

Maybe we should all set a goal that when we get to our goal weight we will go out and buy a new gorgeous dress. Something that we would never have worn before getting to our goal.

My goal is to fit into my old gorgeous dress (i.e. my temperature dress). But if my plateau doesn’t break soon I don’t know …

My wedding dress was a sample; I think it cost $400 and I had it altered to take off the train. If you remove the big pouffy sleeves (that I slipped down off my shoulders after we left the synagogue), it would probably look fine today! At least it wouldn’t be far off from the dresses I see on “Say Yes to the Dress”! But doubt it will ever fit again - sigh.

Oh, yes. DD wanted to rent a Herve Leger dress for prom. Knowing how well she took care of her clothes, I nipped the idea in the bud - I looked up the prices of those dresses, and there was no way we could afford to pay $1500 for a ruined dress . She went to the prom wearing a $200 mermaid dress from Cache, looking like Audrey Hepburn and loving it.

I never had a wedding dress - we were too poor to afford a wedding. But… I just tried on the jeans DD wore in 8th grade - they fit!! Yay!

PackMom, we are going to have to call you PacklessMom…

Yesterday my wife took out clothes that I wore in the 1980s and I’m wearing them now. I’ve been bringing my newer stuff down to the basement in anticipation of storage or donation. There’s one suit (makes me look like a Chicago mobster) that I’d like to donate but I need to find a place that takes it - I wouldn’t want it ruined in a storage box.

Congrats, Packmom!

I just finalized my plans for a trip to Italy at Christmas. I hope to lose at least 20 more pounds by then. Maybe I will reward myself with some new clothes for the trip.

I’ve been following WW for 8 weeks now and I am down 10 pounds from when I started. Despite the fact that it is very slow going…it is working well for me because I can eat just about anything I want as long as I count it.

I have been eating a few too many WW deserts, though. I can’t eat just one…so I usually get 8 -12 pts a day on dessert…a habit that I need to break. This is where my lack of control (binging) is showing up…I need to get a handle on it if I am ever going to get control over my eating.

My carb addiction is getting better, though. Since WW puts a higher point value on carbs, I am doing better not raiding the cracker box and bagels. I am not craving carbs as much as I used to.

Be careful, BCEagle91, they will be recruiting you for one of those Progresso commercials!

I’m down 3 lbs, for a grand total of 55 lbs, from my highest weight over a year ago. so psyched, isn’t it weird how when you lose you instantly feel so much more motivated, well, duh, of course it makes sense, but why is it when you don’t lose, it’s so common to start eating, cheating with food? it would seem that if you’re not losing you’d be more motivated, but for me it doesn’t work that way. anyway, I am pleased to be back on the wagon so to speak.

wdaveo–I find the same thing about the dessert thing, glad ww’s points plus takes those high carbs into account now, bc in the past it was my downfall. I try to have sugarfree treats, ie. sf frozen fruit bars, sf pudding, it’s still a dessert but doesn’t get me going with the carb cravings. still need to limit those, but it’s progress…
