Weight Loss for Dummies

Here’s a similar recipe for margaritas that I use: 1.5 oz. tequila, 2 T. fresh lime juice, 4 T. water, 1/4 t. orange extract, 1 or 2 drops of liquid Splenda (EZ-Sweetz) or a packet of Splenda. That mojito recipe looks yummy, 12rmh18. I am going to try it.

Are we related? We are also Ice Snobs. Have been buying ice for years, even though we have delicious well water to use for ice. $1.69 can buy happiness…

We have been buying ice from the grocery store too while we were waiting for our new refrigerator to get here. It really is better! I love those crystal clear ice cubes.

If you really prefer the skinny margarita drink it. But a tsp of sugar is only 14 calories. It’s not going to make you fat - it’s the liquor that has most of the calories.

The problem is I don’t want a teaspoon of sugar - I want a jumbo margarita. And a 4 oz. serving of Jose Cuervo margarita mix has 24 grams of sugar which is almost 6 teaspoons of sugar. And a jumbo margarita probably has 3 4 oz. servings of margarita mix in it which is 3/8 of a cup of sugar.

Who else os thirsty?

Izzie, but how many calories are in the liquor of your jumbo margarita? It’s still the lion’s share.

Part of the problem is those mixes are way too sweet. I’ve always made margaritas from scratch. This is the recipe:

Authentic Margarita (serves 8)
8 oz tequila
6 ox. triple sec
3/4 cup fresh lime juice
salt for the rim
lime slices for garnish

We like it a little bit sweeter than this so we add 1 TB of sugar and we add 1 cup of water and then freeze it to get frozen margaritas.

waving at 12rmh because in the cafe my post count doesn’t go up! :D

Going out for Greek food tonight…will try to keep things in check but can’t make any promises! Hummus - eat the veggies for dipping instead of the pita, order tabbouleh, stay away from the fries…they do have a baklava dessert - baklava with fresh vanilla ice cream drizzled with honey - at the MOST I will just order one and the four of us will each just enjoy a couple of bites!

Moderation is the key. :)

Baklava was the groom’s cake at our wedding. :)

I’m glad we’re finally talking about alcohol!

^^even with the margaritas?? :frowning:

I’ve been following this thread for a while, and have finally got the courage to try to join all of you. My weight loss journey will surely be long, as I have a lot to lose (think Oprah Winfrey’s size). Would you all mind if I come along for the ride? I weighed myself today and am ready to start. I can use all the support I can get. Thanks:)

Austerity, my friend, caloric austerity! ;)

Could they hold the ice cream? I don’t think baklava needs it. Of course I never order baklava because I’ve never had restaurant baklava that held a candle to dh’s.

I went to a Mexican restaurant for a going away party. I had steak and shrimp fajitas. Had a little bit of rice and beans but skipped the flour tortillas. It was simply delicious but no margaritas here.

mathmom, if you get a margarita at a restaurant, the majority of the calories actually are from the mixer and the triple sec. Homemade margaritas are much better for you but keep in mind that triple sec has 103 calories per ounce with 11 grams sugar. It doesn’t make sense to me though to say well, I am drinking all this alcohol, I might as well add half the sugar bowl to it. I count carbs though, not calories so I really can’t be having sugar along with the high fat in a low-carb diet. Plus after having that high-sugar margarita last night, the reaction to the sugar I had is not an experience I want to repeat anytime soon. Homemade margaritas are great but most of my margarita drinking takes place in restaurants because when a group of friends or family members goes out, we seem to end up at mexican restaurants.

Welcome, Wonka!!!
We’re happy to have you and once we all have another margerita it is down to business!!

Seriously, everyone here is on a different journey. Some have a lot to lose and some a little but since we are emphasizing a healthy outlook and changing bad happens, how can it not work! :)

Welcome, wonka. I also have a lot to lose, which is why it’s dropping easily right now. We can keep each other company on this long road …

I’m going out to dinner tonight, too (again!) Summer is tough because i get together with a lot of friends that i don’t see regularly during the school year.

Anyway, it’s a fish place so I’m ahead of the game. I do know that a Margarita is in order!
