Weight Loss for Dummies

^^ Please check out our other group, too. It is also supportive, but can be a little intimidating. (Diet and Exercise thread) There is great information on kinds of exercises to do and food choices. Welcome! I bet yoga might help your shoulder if you have a good instructor who can help you modify poses.

Start by getting into physical therapy to get that shoulder going!

Congrats everyone. I am at a plateaum but havent been really diligent. I was going to work out today (sitting here in my workout clothes) but have a serious headache that tylenol didnt touch. I am doing laundry instead (the headache came BEFORE the laundry  )

Welcome runnersmom! You should probably get that shoulder looked at if you ahven’t already before you start working out.

Your post sounds so familiar to me! I have gained and lost the same five lbs four or five times now. This thread is the first thing that I feel like I can stick with because the accountability is friendly and supportive.

I’m glad your joining us!

Well, now that that time of the month is past, I’m down another pound, for 10.6! I’m happy about it, but, again, my knee is starting to bother me from all the walking. I feel like I might need to pull back a bit.

What’s amazing is how this attention to eating and exercise is yielding big results quickly. Makes me feel like even if I’m less diligent it will still work for me.

I haven’t told my story but I lost more than 70 pounds on WW more than 10 years ago, thanks in large part to all my running (I eventually became a marathon coach). But when I hurt my knee and could no longer run, it crept back on. The reality is I didn’t have to modify my eating when I was running because I earned so many points with the running. Once I didn’t have that crutch, on it came. My goal this time is to be moderate about the exercise and the food. Wish me luck!

Congratulations, Youdon’tsay, Marilyn, mathmom on the losses! I weighed on Wednesday and was down 5 lbs from the previous weighing 5 days before. I’d been on a plateau, though, for 2-3 weeks. Total weight loss 7 lbs, a little faster than my goal 1 lb/week.

Welcome, runnersmom! You do have a lot going on. Some of us here are in the same situation, but we are doing what we can to slowly change things for the better. It’s working well. I echo advice to get ye to a doctor and then an PT. I had a “frozen” shoulder for a year - very limited range of motion and painful. I finally went to a doctor who sent me to PT. I started at 3x/week and went for a total of 2 months, I think, tapering down on the frequency. If I’d realized how well it would work, and how quickly, I would have gone a lot sooner.

Agree with NYMom–operative words are “slowly”, “change”, and “better.”

Thanks all - this is what I meant by the supportive community of CC. MOWC, I have been reading the Diet, exercise etc. thread, but to be honest, IDad scares me  I do take note of the exercises discussed there, and am very interested in yoga. Interestingly enough, my other shoulder was “frozen” a couple of years ago, and this one hurts in a very different way, so I’m thinking I may have done something to it when I fell. Anyway, I will heed the advice echoed here and call the doctor - once I get the kid who’s leaving for grad school in Israel out the door! I know it’s one day at a time, so here’s to tomorrow.

Yes! Really, what’s the hurry, anyway. Today I bought a very casual t-shirt dress. I had my 21 year old D with me. I went into the dressing room expecting it to look too clingy and “lumpy”. But it looked nice. I thought I was seeing things so I pulled my D into the dressing room and whispered “whadda ya think?” She liked it. I asked her if I looked like a pathetic middle aged woman who thinks she looks good but doesn’t. She laughed and said she wouldn’t lie about something like that. So I bought it and I’m wearing it tonight, dammit!

IDad doesn’t do anything by halves. You should hear him on the subject of smoking and the one good thing about shutting down the politics forum is I can go back to liking him. He’s worth listening to though I think. And he makes me feel guilty enough about not doing more that sometimes I really do get nudged to step it up a bit.

^^^ Excellent!

Remember that iDad has lost over 80 pounds and couldn’t even walk down his driveway without getting winded. Don’t let him scare you. He’s just a strong advocate!

MOWC and BB–Thanks for the recommendations for products for my water exercise routine. MOWC, your description of walking in the lake and singing YMCA was hilarious…thanks for the chuckle:) I did great today, except for the part when I went into See’s candy store with my daughter (she was buying something for herself). I should have passed up the sample of candy, but I didn’t. I don’t think I’m going into one of those stores again. I can’t stop thinking about chocolate now. Those stores are too dangerous for me!

I want to know why you don’t have any of THOSE pictures on FB, MoWC!!!

great visualization. I will be down at our pool tomorrow. Can’t say it’s not warm enough. And next week, I just might try the yoga thing. OH, boy!

Okay…I am so frustrated. On Wednesday of this week I posted that I was half way to my goal. Today I weighed in and am up two lbs from Wednesday’s weight and up 1 from last weeks! ARGHHHHHHHH!

Just had to get that off my chest.

WHAT is going on?!!! I wish I could blame my period but that ship sailed years ago :(

EPTR - Could be just a fluke. Stay the course, reexamine the times you are in restaurants or at other people’s houses - who knows what they put in those dishes and drinks?

There has been a lot of eating out this week but I have really tried to be careful. And I’ve been exercising a min. of 30 min. per day. I logged back onto to MyPlate today because I had gotten overly confident about m ability to estimate my intake so that is probably a step in the right direction. Oh well.

EPTR, you will get on that scale and find better results soon I’m sure!

But you know, that is why I DON’T weigh myself - my clothes, my mirror and my energy level is my gage - weight - especially a pound or two (here or there, back and forth) would drive me crazy.

Good for you, EPTR, for getting back on MyPlate.

EPTR, 1-2 lb fluctuations are absolutely normal. My weight can be anywhere from 122 lb to 127 lb depending on how dehydrated or hydrated I am. Please do not beat yourself over such minor things. I think as long as you are staying the course, you will see the results.
