Weight Loss for Dummies

Oh. NYmom, we are twins. I did the same thing to my toe a few weeks ago and couldn’t exercise. Luckily, it wasn’t broken and it healed quickly. Yours will too!

I also empathize with the work on the house. While we have no home repairs gong on, we are in the third month of our bedbug treatment plan which is incredibly disruptive and routine shattering. You and I can commiserate and get back on track together. Hang in there.

Thanks, EPTR - I can imagine that bedbug treatment would be disruptive. I hope that it is over soon and successful.

I do have some good news to report. When this thread first started, before I lost any weight, I noticed something. At the gym, on a certain weight machine, there is a mirror that gives a good side view of the exerciser (me!) seated. The profile of my chest/midsection was 3 rolls, if you can imagine that. They were all about the same size, to my dismay. When I was on that machine yesterday, I noticed that the top “roll” - my bust- was by far the largest and most prominent (not that I am busty, I’m not, but in relative terms). The two lower rolls were fairly inconspicuous, much diminished. Progress!

Well! Let’s hear it for diminishing rolls! LOL! Good for you. I hate when you catch a look at yourself from a point of view that you are not used to seeing. It usually isn’t a welcome revelation. I’m glad yours was!

Isn’t it great NYMom? Sort of same thing happened to me. I had been noticing that when I drove the car, I had this big roll between my chest and waist that wasn’t there years ago. It bothered me. So that was one of my goals…to get rid of that annoying roll. Now that it’s gone, driving is more comfortable. Keep going!

NYMom, that is significant progress! And improved visuals are definitely motivating!

Even more so than the mirror at home, I always pay attention to my silouette in the door before I enter work. For some reason, there I can see when my hips look slimmer or if the middle area sticks out.

Started this morning with a warm cup of coffee (definitely cool outside today!!) and a homemade bran muffin that actually IS pretty healthy - my sister in law made them but it’s a great recipe that I have made before with all-bran cereal and baby food prunes (serious! Makes them nice and moist and provides the sweetness!)

For lunch I brought some leftovers from the weekend that should last a couple of days: homemade hummus, an olive oil tomato salad and some of my moms delicious sweet and sour cabbage - a weird combo, I know, but it will be a healthy feast for me!

Packmom, I’m with everyone else, keep up the exercise. Since you are running, it’s possible winter weather will slow you a bit there anyway. I’d allow yourself a few indulgences on the weekends. Congratulations!

I’m with Packmom on this one:

Although I’m the same height as you, Packmom, I have never been that low of a weight, not since college anyway. I’m starting out almost every day on the Wii Fit as much for the aerobic benefit as anything. Had my semi-annual blood lab done last week and am quite curious if the results will show much improvement. I’ve got some loose bulges and such now (like on the abdomen and under the arms) that show in some clothes but not others. I’m trying to add some toning exercises to my morning Wii Fit routine.

DH took a full body photo of me last weekend and I actually didn’t mind posting it on Facebook. In the past I probably would have edited it to just shoulders and above. I can now fit into an old favorite green skort that I probably haven’t worn in at least 5 years. It was part of an outfit that I wore to the Getty Museum and Rodeo Drive on a vacation so I have very fond memories. I still have the coordinating shell and blouse, purse, and straw hat - so now I can wear it all again!

Wish I had some eating tips but I haven’t really changed what I’m eating very much. I am being much more circumspect - we went out for burgers and I had one with a bourbon glaze and crispy onion rings - I skipped the bun entirely, just ate the burger and some of the rings - and about six small fries. I’m keeping up with caprese salads but that will end when the fresh produce is done for the season. Sometimes as a small snack I eat a half cup of Puffed Rice kernel by kernel. I also eat a lot of pistachios in the shell since it takes a while to open each one so makes a long slow snack. I’m still eating a lot more eggs - I like the whites of HB and fried eggs and just toss the yolks, so I get some protein with very little calories.

I’ve been lucky  in that DH and I have basically been staying at home while he recuperates from his hip operation - not going out, not seeing people, no major events. It’s kind of boring but allows me to control all my eating.

Well, I went back to work yesterday and felt good about getting back into a routine. I ate well and resisted the urge to eat a big snack at midnight. Had almonds instead. I just have to figure out a good time to get to the gym now that school has started.

Page 3 again?

I guess this weight loss thing really is one day at a time. Yesterday: an emotional high. I wore a new outfit to work and then to a dinner meeting of a group that hasn’t met all summer, so I was debuting the smaller me. Got lots of compliments, starting with husband and secretary in the AM, and ending with 16 year DD at night telling me “you are so pretty right now!” Of my dinner, I ate only fish and some green beans and literally 2 bites of a giant piece of carrot cake. Drank water. Did not eat any of the cracker stuff on top of the fish, or the side of rice, or the rest of the carrot cake. No rolls and butter. Did not have a real drink. And yet, this morning: up 0.8 lbs. ***? I know that by tomorrow it will probably be gone, but still. And on top of that, it is pouring and disgusting outside. This doesn’t seem like a fair way to have to start the day after a high. (OK. I’m done whining now. This was really just to bump us back to page 1.)

MJSMOM,
I bet it is water weight from the salty fish
Weigh yourself again after your morning caffeine beverage has its diuretic effect.

I just discovered that apparently we aren’t allowed even to use the initials for the expression that starts with What The _____. I used the initials in my previous post, but when the post came up, the initials were replaced with asterisks. Oops. Who knew? Sorry.

So, I am in about week 8 of no racewalking. It has not been easy. I need it for my physical and mental health. I KNOW there are lots of other things I could do - swimming, biking, etc. but I don’t enjoy them and so it is just not the same. I have continued to do weight training, but once again, doesn’t have the same benefits. MJS, I just thought I would do my own whining so you have company.

I have managed to keep my weight the same. I am really proud of my discipline. My dad was recently re-admitted to the hospital and I am making this public vow that I will not allow the stress of this readmission and the long hours at the hospital lead to crisis weight gain. It would be far too easy for me to head down to the hospital cafeteria and have a tuna salad sandwich (loaded with mayo, salt), a bag of chips (albeit lowfat) and a coke. I could eat that everyday it is my favorite comfort lunch. I am using this forum to swear that won’t happen.

So - thanks all!

Sorry to hear about your father, worknprogress. Hope he gets out of the hospital soon, not only for his own sake but for the sake of your healthy eating lifestyle.

Went to an Italian restaurant last night and ordered two dishes: Grilled eggplant, roasted peppers and gorgonzola cheese, Oven roasted; and fresh broccoli, olive oil, garlic, fresh pepper and lemon. Served hot.

It must have had gobs of calories with all of the olive oil and cheese, because it tasted VERY good!

mjsmom, don’t worry, it’ll prob. be gone tomorow. You made good choices at the restaurant and looked good in your outfit. Bravo! It is nice for people to notice.

I went back to work yesterday too and had a few people notice the weight loss. One person asked how much I had lost and then asked “how do you feel?” Would anybody ever say " I lost weight and now I feel terrible"?

wnp2…sorry about your father. Hope he’s well soon. Take some good snacks to the hospital so you don’t cave in and hit the cafeteria. How much longer until you can start racewalking again?

Yes.

I read in a book the author said, “I’ve heard lung cancer is quite an effective method of weight loss, but I don’t recommend it.” ;)

While walking/jogging around my track Tuesday morning, I must have stepped on my foot wrong. The pain was so bad I couldn’t finish, I didn’t walk yesterday, and today, I had to quit after only going around twice. I have never ever experienced a foot injury in six years of walking, but maybe it is due to upping my intensity to jogging part of the time. This is a real setback and has me panicking because I have tried to get walking the track as regular as brushing my teeth, and missing otherwise possible (no early appointments, no pouring rain) days with the prospect of missing more is likely to make me really crabby. Plus, I need that cushion of calories burned + raised metabolism because I like to eat like a lumberjack. Sorry for whining; grump, grump.

workinprogress- sending good thoughts for your Dad.
I had a frustrating day yesterday. I went out shopping with a friend. I decided to try on dresses. I could not find anything that I thought looked good. It was frustrating that despite losing quite a bit of weight my body just doesn’t look great in certain cuts. In jeans and a t shirt or sweater I look very good. In dresses my mid section still looked terrible. I have to remind myself that even at 100 lbs certain cuts don’t work for me. I have never had a defined waistline and I don’t have much on top.
CCSiteobsessed- I know how you are feeling.I also like the routine getting out each day and walking. My hip bursitis is in full flame up which is making exercise painful. Going to attempt to have them injected again tomorrow. H and I have a trip planned that includes lots of walking and lots of stair climbing. I want to go and have a good time and not feel like an old lady whining about all her aches and pains.

Mom60,
I remember reading an article once about weight loss and it talked about the fact that the shape of our body changes little when we lose weight. Our overall size will decrease but the shape stays pretty much the same. My thighs are always going to be larger than the rest of me because that’s my shape.
My neighbor, who is a personal trainer would suggest trying to workout the upper body so that your waist will appear smaller. I don’t know if i buy that. I have noticed (and have bought a few) a lot of shirts and dresses in the stores with shirred waists. They give the impression of a narrower waist. Check out GAP and Banana Republic.

eptr, I have thunder thighs too, the saddlebag variety (as opposed to the tree trunk variety). They’ve gotten smaller with weight loss but are still there.

Sigh, agreed. I never have a waist, no matter what my weight. The pants size may go down, but they always hurt at the waist.
