Welcome New Choaties!

@graceeeeeee we just talked on the phone with an AO (they called in light of the recent scandal). He said all of that stuff should come out around May

yahoo!! i’m so excited. i cannot wait to leave my current school!! @Nico.campbell

@applejuice007 the schedule is changing for next year so whatever you’ve seen about the schedule is not what it’ll be. The double course you are talking about, called American Studies or AmStuds, is taken as a double period class, kind of like a lab. The Science Research Program, or SRP, is taken junior year, junior summer, and senior fall, and no, you are not expected to have completed Bio. Typically, students put off either bio or APUSH until their senior year. You typically take 5 core classes at a time - English, language, history, math, and science. Anything else is taken as a sixth course. Some people take six courses all the time - I think those people are crazy, and I’m one of the top ten in the class, so clearly you don’t have to do it to be at the top.
@bantisse I’m not with admissions so I have no clue. Take what I say with a grain of salt, but what I’ve come to understand is that if you can pay full price they’ll take you off the wait list. Don’t hold me to that though.
Also, I think that race-segregating happens to some extent - there is a “black-group” - but it’s not like a fast rule. I think that there’s much greater segregation between day students and boarders.

Hi!

I was wondering about Choates STEM/science related courses. Are there a lot of options? If so, what are the popular ones?

Thanks!
Possible incoming freshman

@krvin12 If you go to Choate’s website, then academics, then curriculum, you can read course descriptions.

For Science at Choate, most freshman take Physics. It used to be Honors or regular highly based on your performance on SSAT exams both Math and Verbal. The Physics Floatilla in the Spring is a time-honored tradition where students try to make their way across the pond with carboard and duct tape.

Check out images of Choate’s Kohler Environmental Center. You can apply to spend time at the KEC and take all your classes there related to Environmental Science.

Also note that the KEC has its own chef and dining facilities. I hear the food is exceptional.

hi! i had a question. if i wanted to take psychology in my fourth or fifth form year, that would count as a sixth course, right?

Oh also: are there placement test, or will they just base your classes off of your SSAT scores? I know on the Exeter course sheets they explicitly said “for students with a quantitative percentile greater than 80%, etc” .

Do they have a japanese language class?

I’m a four-year senior at Choate. I know that decisions are either coming out/have already come out, and if accepted, it’s tough to make a decision about where to attend. If you have any questions about the school, feel free to ask! I know I had plenty!

No @CottonCandyTrill

@“Nico.campbell” yes, they do have placement tests. Sorry for the late response. I’m sure you must have received them by now

@graceeeeeee Hi! I apologize for the late response as a 4th former and higher, yes the class would most likely be your 6th course.

Attended Commencement 2017 in Wallingford and got a chance to tour the brand spanking new St. John Hall/Student Center. Wow! Between the new Math & Computer Science Center (Lamphier) and St. John Hall, and Kohler EC you don’t get any more top shelf than this. Class of 2021, you are attending probably the #1 top notch BS right now with superlative facilities among BSs. Don’t know of another one that can compare. Good luck in your careers. Remember to stop and smell the roses along the way, though. All work and no play…

I second @preppedparent’s comments. We are stopping at Choate tomorrow on our way down from Maine to drop kiddo back at USMA as he wants to see the facilities. The Kohler EC opened his freshman year, and he did get to enjoy the Lamphier center his last semester, but ground hadn’t been broken yet on the new student center before he graduated. That campus has changed so much in so few years. It was beautiful to begin with. It’s absolutely stunning now. You new Choaties are SO fortunate.

Most of us Choate students are a little less than a month away from the start of school. I’m hoping that this might be a good opportunity to revitalize this thread (please correct me if I’m wrong). If there are any questions I or other contributors can answer about Choate Rosemary Hall, feel free to ask here.

do you think that there’s a huge separation between day and boarding students? also, how hard is it to switch classes during the first week?

ALSO hmu if u wanna hang before school starts because I’m coming 4 days early
