Hi, I thought the second link offered some info re: commuters’ experiences as NYU students, as reported in the article in the link. I have no direct knowledge of what it is like to be a NYU commuter.

My S loves it at NYU (he lives in a NYU dorm) and aside from planning to study abroad in Shanghai junior year first semester, he does not want to leave NYU in NYC. He has thrived in the opportunities for learning, social interactions, fun and music outside of studies at NYU. He has a very musically-inclined part of him that is now blooming at NYU with the additional opportunities that are part of being in NYC. He has been doing music recording, planning and implementing gigs in various venues in NYC and NYU. He plans to do a summer internship to learn about management, technology, and networking issues in the music business.

Believe it or not, this is his “side” interest/ (serious) hobby. Academically, he is planning on pre-law with maybe double majors in History and East Asian Studies. He plans to be more active in the pre-law and mock trial team experiences in the coming years. He considers most NYU classes thus far to be worthwhile to help him think through academic issues and to be a better thinker overall.

I believe he would say there is no better school for him than NYU. Note that there are many NYU students who love NYU and its setting in NYC. For the right person, it is a “magical” place. However, if you are not a city person and an independent type who takes the initiative, life in NYC and NYU can be difficult. So the NYU/ NYC experience depends on your needs and your personality.
