I’m a first-gen student with a lower GPA(B+ average) at my ISL school, but I am well-liked and have student government positions. Realistically, the Max GPA I can achieve is a 3.77( A average next three years), but that is unlikely, so I’ll be in the 3.6-3.7low range more than liklely. I feel cocky saying this, but I think my college counselling office will pull for me at whatever my top choice is(Harvard but crap shoot chance unless some magic happens). Still, I’m wondering what schools students like me interested in, economics, finance, and public policy, but are mid-level applicants apply too. Big ones I see are BC and Wake as well as Trinity and Colgate. Also, I would like to crack 1500+ on SAT cause my sister got a 1440, and I want to beat her, but we’ll see.
Replying to keep it open
So if you go to a private school, where do kids like you go to college.
Are you a US Citizen? Do you have budget issues?
First gen helps - what level of math will you obtain? You’ve had language, etc.
Your school will know best - and until you have an SAT, you don’t.
A great school for all your majors would be Pitt, Binghamton, Ohio State, Maryland. These all have a PPE.
For smaller, I’d say Denison could work, Rhodes, Richmond (reach), Rochester (reach), and College of Charleston.
But again, until you have a test, it’s an unknown.
Talk to your college counselor to see where students like you end up.
Of course, budget / financial need will drive a lot.
Good luck.
kids usally go Wake,Bc,Northeastern if not t20s or Nescac schools but these are basiacally all athletes
ISL is an athletic league, and the schools are quite different in terms of rigor, for example. So part of the answer depends on which ISL school you are coming from.
Where kids go can be influenced by whether they are athletes, full pay, legacy, etc., so your CC can probably help you better understand destinations of alums in that context if you are trying to set expectations based on history.
Your odds might be improved by looking at schools in the Midwest, or even the mid-Atlantic, rather than New England.
Really, though, what matters most is what you are looking for - from major to size, geography, etc. Start there. My guess is your school has a good questionnaire for starting the process. Use the resources you have available to you.
It sounds like you have three more years left of high school. Is that correct?
OP, if you just finished freshman year, know that some colleges don’t look at freshman grades for admissions, so if you can pull out all the stops starting sophomore year, just do it! It’ll be much easier for your CC to advocate for you.
Economics, Finance and Public Policy sounds like a perfect match for Trinity. I’ll keep saying it, their influence in Hartford means kids are afforded internship opportunities both in school and summer at the State House, Mayors office and various finance and healthcare firms to add a real life perspective to their traditional Liberal Arts academic experience. Kids leave with strong resumes and academic grounding. Particularly strong in Econ and Finance.
Poster child for LinkedIn vs USNWR outcomes vs squishy “reputation”debate. #1 NESCAC and #4 Liberal Arts using the LinkedIn lense.
And lots of ISL-types.
im in one of the more rigerous school if that helps
Yes. Taking the SAT sometime this spring/summer
What colleges? Would love to stay in new England.
I heard its really fratty and white? I don’t really care about the really white part as I know men of color at trinity and its seems like they are doing good but im worried that it has alot of nepo babies that I can’t compete with. Would love to go there though and if my distances are solid enough im gonna reach out to them about track and field after this year!
Then you need to get info from the college counseling folks at your private high school. They will most definitely know how students from your school have done in terms of admissions at a variety of colleges.
Do you have any budget restrictions on your college options?
But since I am a ISL type it will be eaiser for me to relate to students in the NESCAC prob
You’d need to look by school - your CC can help.
But they know, particularly for kids at BS, that the transition freshman year can throw you off your game.
As an aside, Trinity is definitely worth the look for your interests. Union’s proximity to Albany and its schedule offers much of the same.
I dont have the data on me but i can giver like a overview I think anywhere from 35-45% to t20s, another 15-20% to elite LAC(Athletes) and the rest to a combo of t30-t50 schools and t25-t40 LACs. Is what I saw badically last year. Budget yeah really looking for somethinf sub20k so i can graduate with no loans or really minimal ones as ill be getting parent help and outside scholorships and stuff( Net price calculators ive done come around 20-25k so with scholorships and parental help i wont need to take out a crazy amount on loans if any)
how would you feel about fordham as another option? it has a good reputation in the finance world as a punch above its weight non target/lower semi target
The cost will be a big driver for you and is important to understanding up front.
If I could count the number of times I’ve heard “I hear it’s white and preppy, but I know people of color who go there and are happy.” I’ve got two sets of African American friends who sent their kids there and are telling everyone to send their kids there for the reasons I mentioned above.
I think Trinity is suffering from vestiges of the past when they were decidedly WASP-y and conservative; the baby Dartmouth of the NESCACs in the late 80’s (old folks on the board will understand the reference). Somehow Dartmouth moved from under that reputational cloud while Trinity apparently hasn’t. And the frat thing is likely about the well-publicized fight between the school and alums about I don’t know what.
But you go to an ISL now, so not sure why competing with Nepo-babies would be a problem. You’re doing that now.
My buddies son ran for them and they seem sprint and jumps heavy and distance light. Not sure if that will be the case when you get there, but you can never be too deep in distance. Especially indoors.
Trinity and Conn College both give Merit Scholarships, so get your grades up and tighten your laces and you may qualify. Don’t know about Econ and Finance at ConnColl, although I’m sure they’re good. Another school that doesn’t get enough love here.
