What are Financial Options for my situation so I dont have to drop out?

Can you find a family member or family friend to consign for you?

@itsgettingreal17 I have asked; however, everyone has said no

Then you really are out of options and will need to take a year off, save up the money you need, then go back and finish. You can’t get the needed loans on your own.

@itsgettingreal17 thank you for your honesty. I am looking into the military as well if nothing works out for me. I don’t have anywhere else to move to and I will probably be kicked out soon so i dont think I will go back to school.

So, I just want to thank everyone for their time. I appreciate it.

what does this mean???

@thumper1 I meant honors program
I apologize for the mix up.

What does it mean? graduated from “honors program”?

Am I recalling correctly that you have a double major…or a minor or something? Any chance you could complete ONE major and graduate sooner?

Choose ONE major and graduate as fast as that’s possible.
Are you being kicked out by your family?
Did you take the federal loans freshman and sophomore years?
@kelsmom: if a student didn’t take their freshman/sophomore loans, can they ask for them on top of the jr/sr loans?

@MYOS1634 the student cannot retroactively get Direct Loans for school years that have ended.

However, the student CAN get the direct loan for the 2016-2017 school year…and bank that for next year.

Thanks! that’s what I thought but I wondered, just in case.

OP:
are you a sophomore? If so, you can still get the sophomore-year loan and bank it for next year ($6,500).
How many credits do you have left till you’re done with your “most direcly employable major”?
Out of the $18,000 you estimate for COA, can you list
-direct costs: tuition+fees =

  • monthly cost of a room in a shared apartment in the town your college is in =
  • estimated budget for food (think in terms of “ramen noodles” or “pumpkin soup with sesame seeds” rather than going out to the restaurant…) = explain what you include in your estimate / ways to cut that down?
  • transportation costs? => ways to cut that down?
  • book rentals?

You could take the $7500 unsubsidized loan by April and save it as suggested above. Then take $7500 in the fall of 2017. Can you earn $5k over the summer? That would add up to $20k and possible get you through another year.

If you are in engineering, take an internship or co-op for summer/fall 2017, then go back in spring 2018 to finish. You should be able to make $10-15k on a good internship. Some even provide housing. Daughter’s friend went to Alaska for the summer and made a lot.

I’m so confused

@thumper1 no, both major classes are scheduled in a manner that allows me to complete them at the same time. I
since certain classes are only offered at certain times, I was able to adjust my course in a manner I could do both with a minor and survive.

I have AP units comping in which eliminated my class requirements

OP, I’m sorry it’s come to this. I read your previous posts as you didn’t take any loans in prior years. If you had you would have $13K banked for this year to help offset costs.

@“Erin’s Dad” its ok, wasnt meant to be. I will try for one more week to look for a job.
work part time and then go for a loan in about 2 months; however, if nothing is ready by januray, then to the marines I will go.

What is your major/minor? Are you at a private school in CA? Is it too late to transfer to a CSU and finish there?

Do you qualify for Calgrant?

Can you apply to be an RA?

And if you are looking at military, how about National Guard instead of Marines?

That might allow you to finish your degree.

@mommdc I am attending a CSU; however, I am not allowed to live in the dorms and the cost of apartments is quite high. I do not qualify for a cal grant

I will look into that option as well
thank you

Would this be a correct summary of your situation:

  1. You have attended a CSU for two years, living with your parents and commuting at no cost to you. This was affordable without loans.
  2. You will no longer able to live with your parents and commute, so you need to live on your own on or near campus, and this cost is what could make continuing to attend school for two more years unaffordable to you.

Correct?

Do you know any others who want to share an off campus place with maximum possible occupancy so that the cost will be substantially lower than the usual estimate, and within the possibility of affording with a federal direct loan and some part time work earnings?
