wow that statement really made feel terrible. i guess i’m not that qualified then. But i really wonder because she’s Asian indian, only did newspaper, took regular classes in math and science. The only thign was she was double-legacy. I just can’t help wondering not that i’m saying it’s wonrg.

Any suggestions. Was deffered in early November with about a 3.8 GPA weighted and a 26 ACT. Contaced admissions, found out I was deffered because my schedule was too weak. Changed my schedule. Retook the ACT and got a 29. My admissions counsler said I should find out soon. But if not, send in my first semester grades.

1st Semester
Architectural Design-A
Personal Fit (required)-A
AP English 12-B
Student Leadership-A
AP Calc-B

Kind of iffy, I dont know if my umich GPA takes into consideration required classes for graduation. I have honor points, giving me a 4.0 for the semester, but umich takes them away. Now, Im kind of worried.

Any suggestions?

UMich only counts your academic classes in your GPA. So those A’s in Architecture, Personal Fit, and Student Leadership are completely disregarded. So you have a 3.0 Senior year GPA in their eyes. But you did improve your curriculum. You did all you could… just send them in and hope!

I was also deferred… I have good board scores, but poor grades, but grades that have shown improvement. What do you think my chances are? I’m really hoping to get into Michigan and was really dissapointed when I found out I was deferred.

Test Scores: ACT 30, SAT 2000 (verbal 670, math 710, writing 630)

Approximate GPA’S on Michigan’s scale (each semester)

Sophomore Year 3.0 2.75
Junior Year 3.0 3.75
Senior Year 4.0

Obviously I had a bad first 1 1/2 semesters but my grades have gotten a lot better. I consider the school I attend to be very good (although it is public) I have also taken difficult classes. I have gotten C’s in difficult science classes, and watched some people take easier ones and get A’s, and get into Michigan. (same or lower test scores) this is unfair, but because Michigan does not take into account our schools weighted G.P.A taking into account the difficulty of the course, I get pretty screwed.

It is always wise not to compare yourself to others. At any rate, Michigan does take course difficulty into considertation, but weighed GPAs are hard to interpret, which is why Michigan has a standardized method to calculate GPAs.

Anyway, even though your last two semseter have been good, it is hard for Michigan to overlook the fact that your GPA for your Sophomore and Junior years was under 3.3. Your ACT/SAT are solid, but not much over the Michigan mean.

Still, you have a decent chance of getting in. Your 4.0 this year will go a long way.

How much would a C+ in an AP class hurt your chances, if all the rest were straight A’s?

Are we talking one C (remember, as far as Michigan is concerned, a C+ is really a C) in the last couple of years or are we talking about one C last semester? If you are deferred, a C your senior year could make things very difficult. Even with 3 or 4 As, that C will knock your GPA down to a 3.5 or a 3.6.

I got two C’s sophomore year (chemistry both semesters)
Junior Year I got a C (shouldnt have) in Physics first semester and then a B second semester.
Senior Year I have Straight A’s…

sorry i thought that response was to me, it was to the other guy, nvm

Talking about one C senior year.

I don’t have my grades yet (finals finished today), but here’s what they are likely to be

Team Sports - A
AP Statistics - A
Physics - A
Marketing - A+
Orchestra - A
AP English - C+

These are how they appear on the transcript. The C+ may get up to a B-, but i’ll need some luck.

I’ll be doing some major begging for it to be boosted, because that’s the difference between a 3.33 and a 3.66 (I don’t think marketing will be counted)

I applied to UMich as a transfer… I wasnt expecting to get in, and today I got a letter essentially saying I was deferred, something like they want to wait until April when they figure out how many open slots they will have for transfer students. But unlike high school students, I wont have any new grades for UMich to see because I sent them my 1st semester college grades, and my 2nd semester doesnt end until May. So… if I wasnt accepted now, is that basically a rejection? I applied real early because I thought id have a slim chance, but now that I’m deferred, UMich has nothing else they can see from me… anyone have any info about deferrals and transfers? I didnt even know schools defferred applicants in the transfer process.

Thanks

Awolves, see if you can talk to your English teacher. If you are 1 point from a B-, ask for mercy.

Your grades are strong otherwise, but a C in English will hurt you at this stage.

i got deferred as well. do i have any chance at all with a 3.56 GPA? i go to a highly competitive school where everyone applies to umich as a safety and they likely wont go. but still, its not looking good…

Applying to Michigan as a safety is never a good idea. Yes, you have a chance, assuming your 3.56 GPA is unweighed, your mid-year report is good and your SAT/ACT is strong…but even then, there are no guarantees.
