What are some disadvantages/advantages of going to school near home?

Living close to home is pretty sick. I live 50 minutes away from home so I can go home on the weekends and work and have my mom do my laundry (epic success)! I can do my laundry but I hate doing it and anyways people steal at my school (I’ve had 2 jeans stolen) so I just do laundry at home. Being able to go home and spend a weekend away from school is awesome imo and if you need to get away from campus to study, then going home is a great idea. I do think living on campus atleast 1 year is big though for your social life + partying. 10k is expensive but in the long run, you will have a better outlook on your college career imo bc you met people and had things to do (party). I’m thinking about living at home though potentially in the future to save money.

I go to school about 25-30 minutes from home. I live on campus - my financial aid package works out so that it would actually be around the same price if I lived here or commuted, and considering the cost of gas, probably slightly cheaper here. Plus I find I get more done here than I do at home, and it’s easier to make friends, go to study groups and things that may be late at night if I’m already here.

I go home about once a month to work, so that could be a good thing if you have a part time job at home you can keep. It helps me 1) stay on the payroll at work, and 2) bring in some extra cash for going out, because my parents don’t give me money so I work during breaks and save it for during the semester.

I also do laundry at school, because it’s free here so why not? And I’d feel like a jerk bringing my laundry home for someone else to do. I can do it myself, so why not leave it at school to do, right?

If you’re familiar with the area, that can help a lot if you make lots of friends from out of state, you can show them cool stuff to do. At the same time, you don’t wanna be like a know it all…that can **** people off.

It’s also a lot easier to get home in case of a family emergency or something. If you have a car on campus, doctor appointments and stuff are also easier to schedule (so you don’t necessarily have to wait til you’re home on break and make all your appointments at once)

Finally, I agree with amarkov - you don’t want to be going home every chance you get. My roomie last year went home ALL THE TIME. Every weekend, if school was cancelled for a mid-week holiday (Veteran’s day, snow days whatever). She always had her parents come bring her her car (Freshman can’t have cars on campus). It was just annoying. Like, if you live that close and you go home all the time, why don’t you just commute?

I woulda commuted if I had a car.

Living close to homes has its advantages and disadvantages though usually the advantagas are minimal.

To list a few:
Advantages:
Can practically go home anytime you like
Know your area
Disadavantages:
Feel tied to home
In your parents backyard
High school again ( and see the current high school students from your former school)
Person next door knows your neighbor ( just a example)
