What are some natural sleep aids and things that interfere with sleep?

H really does need his sleep. He’s the hyper type so he has a hard time winding down and not “marinating” in whatever crappy things happened at the office during the day

when he finally does fall asleep, I don’t think he has really restful sleep. He has “chase dreams” and will actually speak out while sleeping. I can sometimes tell when he’s having a chase dream, so I’ll gently wake him to disrupt the dream. However, sometimes the dreams are very real to him and he’ll actually fling an arm or leg while in deep dream sleep…once his flinging arm hit the back of my head while we were sleeping. Of course he felt terrible, so now we try to keep an extra pillow by my head to offer some protection. lol

If he is waking up hungry during the night, he might have a problem with blood sugar. I am borderline diabetic and trying very hard to lose weight. If I don’t eat a protein/high fiber snack late in the evening, I wake up usually at 4:30 am.

I generally sleep very well, but in the past five years have experience times that I wake up and cannot go back to sleep. No matter how wide awake I am, listening to a book on my ipod (your public library has them for free) will let me go back to sleep quickly.

A quater cup of oj helps me fall back to sleep upon waking in the night.

Hmmm…never thought of that possibility.

thecheckbook: I wonder how OJ helps you go back to sleep.

Not that you can control this…but I sleep much better when my kids (and parents) are doing OK and work woes are minimal.

I sleep well when my DH is home but I have a lot of trouble sleeping when he travels. It’s very romantic – he returns from a trip and I greet him with – “Great, you’re home, now I can get some sleep! Night Sweetie!”

This was reccommended by my son’s sleep specialist

By undergoing the sleep restrictive therapy it was determined that DS really only needs 5-6 hours of sleep per night. He was making himself miserable by going to bed 8 hours before he had to wake up, because by 3 am he was wide awake and could never get back to sleep, yet starting the day at 3am wasn’t the best timetable to be productive until 8 or 9 pm. Now he goes to bed at 12:30 on weeknights and is well rested by 6:30.

He also takes a very low level histamine blocker. It works in the same way that Benadryl would except no grogginess.
