What are the best Public Universities or top public schools in the U.S.?

Ok… so to make an actual ranking of the best publics taking into account:

Admissions Selectivity

Strength of undergraduate admissions

Strength of graduate admissions

Endowment

Research level

I say:

1) UC Berkeley
2) Michigan
3) UCLA / UVA
5) UT Austin / UNC CH
7) Wisconsin / Washington
9) GA Tech / UCSD
11) Illinois

How does this look for the overall best universities. I’m not sure what to do about the College of W&M.

More like:

1 University of California-Berkeley 96.17

7 University of Michigan-Ann Arbor 86.84

11 University of California-Los Angeles 83.84

12 University of Wisconsin-Madison 83.67

14 University of Texas-Austin 80.50

15 University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill 80.40

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/1241939-university-michigans-academic-power-rating.html

Oh UCB…

How is Wisconsin better than UT Austin?

What about law, business, engineering, pharmacy, architecture and all of the other MANY programs that are ranked higher at UT?

What about UT’s significantly larger endowment?

What about UT’s significantly lower acceptance rate.

I was looking at the universities overall - not just the academic power rankings. Ya gotta look at everything! :)

What about UW’s $1 Billion + research budget, better liberal arts, sciences, education and just about everything else. Much higher international rankings. More apps from dummies means nothing.

I live in California and therefore must say that Cal wins.
(UC Berkeley)

Universities are the one industry where we rank them more by their inputs than by their outputs.

In any case, in answer to a question above, most people consider UVa to be roughly equivalent to William and Mary. Each have different strengths and different personalities. They also end up often admitting and rejecting different students. William and Mary is called a college for historical reasons, but it is more like a mid-sized university.

Only some people–mostly in the US- believe in the ranking by inputs. Others are more sophisticated.

I kinda want to get a definitive answer here. How does this look:

Top National Publics:

 1. UC Berkeley
 2. Michigan
 3. UCLA
 4. UT Austin
 5. Wisconsin
 6. Washington
 7. Illinois

Top Liberal Arts Powerhouse Publics:

 1. Virginia
 2. UNC Chapel Hill
 3. College of William and Mary

Top Technical Powerhouse Publics:

 1. Georgia Tech
 2. UCSD
 3. Purdue
