Mississippi allows for beer sales in grocery stores. There is a movement to allow wine sales in the grocery stores, but that is meeting with some resistance. Wine and hard licquor is at private stores.
Our town just passed a law allowing us to be wet!!! It was a great day when it passed. We had to have a petition with about 20% of the voters supporting the vote for wine and beer and a separate petition for hard stuff. We are in the bible belt here, and both of the large Baptist church pastors preached against it. When I saw the Development director in April he said that there were just enough signators. Two days later he said that they were 5 short because some of the signees were not city residents. I called a couple of friends who I knew hadn’t signed and got their signatures. (I got 6!!) The vote was held in July and it passed 3 to 1!!! Everyone was shocked by the margin.
The county to our west is dry, as is most of our county. The first week of sales had 10,000 cases of beer sold. It has been a great boon for our sales tax revenues. We are hoping that the next county over stays dry!!!
Our city allows no sales on Sunday. We now have 2 licquor stores and about 5 grocery/ gas stations that sell beer. One grocery store also has things like Mike’s Hard Lemonade. They also sell light wine. When talking to the owner at a Christmas party he said that as long as the wine is delivered by the beer trucks, it is legal.
As a note, the alchohol must be put in a brown bag when sold. That is different than the white bags that the grocery store uses. My friends and I call it “The Brown Bag of Shame!!!”
Oh, in the Stay in Place ruling Licquor stores are allowed to be open, as they are considered essential.
