Posters who start with a phrase like “Is it okay to lie about…” or write a thread that contains a variation of “will I get caught if I…” should just stop it.

The “need school suggestions” The ones that just state a general major _ “or maybe teach.” with no other info.

How about threads that get shut down by the moderators because of one or two obnoxious posters? That’s happened recently – and I think of something that would contribute to the conversation but the topic is gone.

^ I hate that. If one poster gets out of line I think their posts should be removed or they suspended, but not require the entire topic be shut down for everyone else. In a way that rewards the offending poster.

^^YES! Or when a topic gets shut down just because it’s “uncomfortable” for some people, but is what needs to be talked about…sighs

I think if a posters comments are out of line to the point of getting the thread shut down, they should lose a certain percentage of their post tally. Like maybe 20%. A few times I have seen jail bars over a poster’s picture. How does that work?

Pseudo-“controversial” threads started to start “discussions” but really just make everyone roll their eyes. (not a reference to this thread if that’s not apparent)

Be careful about dissing moderator behavior, gang. Potential violations of TOS. :(

True!

“My child has an IQ of 175, perfect SAT scores , IB, GPA of 4.8, is captain of three varsity teams and runs a homeless shelter , how can he improve his chances at Ivy X?”

The ones that bait posters, especially in any specific profession, to justify their existence.

^^^ Yup. I’m a teacher :)>-

Chance threads, “Will I fit in at ____?” threads, and the treads, usually written by angry parents, that invariably start after the first wave of acceptances…that lash out cos their brain child didn’t get into XYZ soley because s/he isn’t an athlete.

Yes, EPTR, the broad-brush teacher-bashing threads are very annoying (daughter of a teacher here)!

Former teacher here. No bashing ever 'cause I’ve walked in those moccasins. ;)

Married to a teacher, who used to be a doctor. And I’m a college instructor.

We can do no right, judging by some threads.

When I first came on this forum I thought it was so weird that a forum devoted to educational issues was so full of hate for the teaching profession. I’ve learned to TRY to stay away from those threads.

The ones where people somehow read things that were never said and then start bashing and thrashing endlessly about pre-existing agenda items rather than intelligently discussing the actual topic of the thread. And, then when their point was proven wrong they quietly disappear and go elsewhere to do it all over again. lol.

The ones where someone posts, “I can’t believe this thread! Why aren’t the moderators doing anything? I guess they’re all raging liberals [or conservatives]! Really poor moderation on this site.” Then I check, and the poster has not flagged a single post to our attention. Huh.

Is there ANY broad brushing that is NOT annoying? Has happened here on most political discussions. And it is natural it has happened on a site dedicated to education. When threads go against our individual tastes, we tend to find them offensive, even if the perceived attacks are balanced and nuanced.

The issues related to teachers is one that has been divisive. One can expose the many faults of the education system without brushing ALL teachers with the same coat of vitriol. One can see them as victims or puppets of a leadership that has an agenda riddled with deep inequities.

The devil is in the details, but it is easier to demonize the perceived black on white. Not the grey.
