What are the most annoying threads on CC?

  • "I have a 2.8 GPA and plan to go to Harvard." ANSWER: No, you're not. End of discussion.
  • "What should I major in/do for extracurriculars in order to get into law school?" ANSWER: Anything except a junk major, and ditch the extracurriculars.
  • "Will one C/D/F matter?" ANSWER: Yes, at least somewhat.

Any post with the phrase “this was back in the 90s” when it doesn’t apply to the topic at hand.

^^ You know, back in the 90s posts on social media sites like this one didn’t bother me nearly as much as they do now.

^^ clever.

“I am a wealthy international–choosing from HYPSM, which can I attend for free?”

The ones started by people who are good at getting me to believe it is real… so good I suspect it but can’t find a smoking gun.

Threads by a newbie who is busier than Santa: 26 threads since joining on Xmas Eve.

Threads where a poster has an agenda and keeps posting the same opinion again and again and again.

Threads where kids are looking for the easy way or a back door into tippy top schools because nothing but the most elite colleges are good enough for them but they suddenly realize that their stats and ECs aren’t impressive.

The one, where if I understand it right, the family makes 600k/year and wants to manipulate their finances so they can qualify for need-based financial aid.

@MaelstromMonkey and @MamaBear16 , no prizes for guessing who you mean, lol!

I have a seen more than one post lately which asks if their YouTube channel counts as an EC. And is it impressive because it has a thousand views?

Inexperienced parents who know it all, insist what will lead their unconventional kid to rousing success.

And a couple of posters who argue their assumptions over and over, but if you read it all, change sides in a few comments.

Posters who feel they must post in every thread, even when they have nothing much to add other than a humblebrag.

^^ Must…resist…urge…to…post…metareply…humblebrag…

Any thread where a poster asks if it’s OK to take out $60,000 a year plus in loans to pay for undergrad school.

Oh…and can the student take those loans all by themselves?

Most annoying responses are when someone is looking for college suggestions but has restrictions, and the responses try to convince OP otherwise.
For instance, poster says no west coast schools please (or no southern schools, or no all women’s schools) and most responders go on to suggest west coast schools (or schools in Florida, or all girls schools etc.)

In general, many of the “please give me advice on transferring” when the reason the student wants to transfer is to move to a school higher up in the rankings (instead of moving for a specific major, etc.). More specifically, the one in which a student was admitted to Johns Hopkins ED a few weeks ago and wants to know what her GPA should be so she can be sure of being able to transfer to Duke. SMH.

When things arent perfect but may be fine. It seems the kid made an aware decision, can roll with it.

And poster after poster allays the OP’s concerns. (Not just nicey nicey.) Then that one comes in who just has to explain why it’s a mistake, wont be a good choice after all. Smh.

Ones where a newbie who supposedly joined in November is mocking another newbie who joined in December. Thats assuming the former is “really” a newbie.

Totally biased, but any thread about geting into Duke! Lol!

“Will I get need based aid from name the college?”

Sorry…we are not mind readers. Don’t know family finances.
