<p>I don’t know if this has been mentioned before but something that is facepalm-worthy.</p>

<p>“Need help on major choice: Which Engineering is the best?”</p>
<p>Sorry, incorrect link two posts up. Here’s the link to the post I was referring to:</p>
<p><a href=“http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1688607-getting-into-stanford-or-harvard-university.html”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1688607-getting-into-stanford-or-harvard-university.html</a></p>
<p>Anything having to do with affirmative action is instant moderater bait and will be deleted. </p>
<p>Given that the things said in affirmative action forums tend to be the same over the years, this is probably a good idea and the mods have determined that the discussion is a huge time waster and is, in the end, political — and political discussions are banned by TOS.</p>
<p>^^ not deleted, usually moved to the Race in Admissions thread.</p>
<p>On this topic, my pet peeve is vague thread titles too. Like </p>
<p>“Question?”</p>
<p>or </p>
<p>“What Can I Do?”</p>
<p>
</p>
<p>I see your point, and agree semantically.</p>
<p>I make a distinction between sharing an opinion ‘on topic’ and steering a conversation in a totally different direction just because one wants to get on a soapbox, especially while being argumentative The latter frequently requires ad hominem and straw man tactics. Frankly, I think some posters are so wrapped up in their narrative (perhaps not the best word to use) that they don’t even do it on purpose. </p>
<p>BTW, I am referring directly to college topics (prestige, fit, test prep, private vs public, etc…). Topics like politics, religion, etc. are third rail for internet message boards. Not a good venue for such conversations and I wasn’t referring to those.</p>
<p>I know this might sound a little mean, but on the “Chance Me” forum, I -always- ignore all threads that includes any Ivy Leagues and/or California universities. I know, crucify me, but damn it sometimes I think it’s a bug on the forum page where all threads keep having the same title
“CHANCE ME USC, UCL, UC, UC UC UCU CUCUUUC” etc…</p>
<p>Is there a confession thread? This should probably go there.</p>
<p>Actually, I’ll even go as far as to challenge you. If someone can send me a screenshot of ONE page of the “What are my chances” thread that doesn’t mention any UC (in the title!) of Ivy League, I will deactivate my account and become a freelance writer. That’s a promise.
<em>Looks at the thread now just to make sure << >></em>
Hah!</p>
<p>

<p>Quite a few? <a href=“Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/</a></p>

<p>The “which school is higher ranked?” threads</p>
The ones where OP argues that they are 1st gen college because parents got their PhDs in India
The ones where you don’t even have to read the posts. Once you see the posters name you know exactly what they are going to say on that subject.
The ones that are cliques. Some of the people actually get together for brunch or some other fool thing. I enjoy this being an anonymous thread. That way I can speak completely freely.
I want my red pen so badly when I see the post of a self professed superstar student, 4.4 (out of 4) unweighted GPA, 2200+ sat score, etc. and the post is riddled with spelling and grammer mistakes.
No doubt everyone makes an occasional mistake, but come on brainiacs…If you are so smart learn how to add and spell.
I can’t help it … red pen has a life of its own … ‘grammer’ …
(thinks carefully to make sure ‘its’ is correct …)…
^^ lol
The ones where the bullies gang up on certain posters.
The ones where the self appointed thread hall monitors come in not to participate in the discussion but to chide the posters who are providing feedback they don’t like. Predictably derails and often kills the discussion.
I raise my glass to all of the previous confessions!. 'Ere!
Admittedly I haven’t been here too long but I can safely say I’ve encountered each of those cases, with the most prominent being the “Stellar student/sub-par writing”. Coherency doesn’t weigh too much on GPA I’m afraid.
How about those OPs who seem so nice in their intro posts, pleading for advice… Then someone comes along, writes a huge, detailed and informative paragraph, only to be replied by:
“bump”
