What are the most annoying threads on CC?

MODERATOR’S NOTE: OK, move on, please.

Threads where an OP receives both genuine and harsh advice, but it’s always the harsh advice that racks up the likes on that thread even when the genuine advice keeps the civility level at a high and garners positive responses. It’s one thing if the OP is being completely ignorant to all advice given to them, but it’s natural that any OP is going to defensively snap at any comments they feel are talking down to them while also taking other advice in stride. Threads like that just devolve into a huge shouting match and completely lose their value.

This is a general observation.

Sure it is.

Waitlist threads where students stress out for days and weeks about getting off the waitlist and put lots of energy into following up with the college of their dreams to convince it of their desire to attend and then get let in off the waitlist and say “I don’t know what to do”.

Everyone wants to be invited to the party, even if they have no desire to attend.

Commenters who think the SAT isn’t hard enough.

Threads where the OP owes 9K in tuition/fees and is indignant that they cannot participate in graduation ceremonies.

Threads where the OP cheated, got caught and is now trying to find ways to avoid the consequences.

Any thread where a student wants to go to a school that’s really too expensive for their family and doesn’t seem to care about the toll it could take on them. For whatever reason, they believe that working hard in high school entitles them to go OOS and/or to a name brand school even if their parents have to take on enormous debt and risk the opportunities they can provide to younger siblings to make it happen.

Where high school kids think their thoughts make them authorities.

Threads where posters believe that anecdotal examples outweigh statistical and factual information found on the college website.

Threads where posters seem to think that everyone should stay in-state. Even when some had an absolutely wretched time in HS, particularly from an interpersonal (but also financial) standpoint. Even when some could possibly have found a much better fit elsewhere. Even when some people could have a more valuable college degree by graduating from the school they love that just so happens to be OOS as opposed to settling for staying in-state when they clearly don’t want/have to. Even when remaining in-state would most likely mean a repeat of HS because of embarrassingly lacking social scenes (small state = lots of suitcase/commuter schools).

Threads where posters think that transferring from an OOS best-fit public university to a mediocre in-state public university (that is NOT the flagship) halfway through college is of any real benefit besides maybe - maybe - financial. Especially when they’re already doing well at their current university and they’ve made valuable life-long connections in their first two years that would make it almost unbearably difficult to leave. Especially if that student could potentially have to take an extra semester or two just because of the transfer. Especially if that student would much rather drop out of college altogether than leave their beloved school to attend a suitcase/commuter school with a well below-par social scene and, at best, very average academics.

Threads where posters think they know everything about another poster’s family finances and that qualifies them to tell that poster that they should leave the university they’ve loved for two years. Never mind all the life-long connections that would be lost. Never mind the fact that grades would absolutely tank when someone is forced to leave the university they love to attend a university they don’t like. Never mind the fact that post-grad job prospects would be significantly altered by any sort of transfer at this late stage (especially when the app deadline of the two good in-state publics have already passed). Never mind the fact that no in or OOS restrictions were placed when the student applied and got accepted to several schools.

Maybe this isn’t the website for you, @LBad96.

@MaineLonghorn what?? What do you mean? It’s fine here. I enjoy being on here. I don’t agree with everything, but it’s not a big deal haha

Oh, that’s good. It’s just that it seems like you don’t like a lot of the advice you’ve received. I’m glad I was wrong.

There’s a popular venting thread.

This is more a throwing our arms in the air and SMH sort. Generalized eye rolling.

Threads where students post in the Parents Forum or in the Parent Cafe…and then criticize the parents…or argue about their opinions.

  • "Chance me thread"....the chances are 50/50 every time (yes or no)
  • People who reply to "chance me threads" with a "you're in". Nobody can provide this guarantee nor should we give that opinion and false hope.
  • Any "How did this happen? Hard work does not pay off!" thread where the OP is upset they were rejected when everyone said they were in or have a perfect Math/English SAT score or GPA.

I

Annoying and exhausting.

@bboop42 Especially those rejected by HYPSM who have to settle for Cornell, Northwestern, JHU or Berkeley. Oh the indignity!
