What are the most annoying threads on CC?

Then maybe they’ve never been about you – but there’s been at least four different instances in which the “annoying” person has been someone who reads this thread, and who then snapped back in anger, perpetuating whatever argument they were in.

And once where it was me and I found it hilarious.

It’s been explained that TOS doesn’t allow that. Do they shut down a thread the rest of us enjoy because a few didn’t play nice? Or get rid of those jerks?

“there’s been at least four different instances” *out of 3100 posts *

And sorry for this, but didn’t someone recently say they minded when another calls for closure?

I have seen it happen.

It’s all fun and games until you turn around and the coworker you thought you were mocking behind their back is right there listening to you. And in this thread that happens over and over again.

I’m not looking through 207 pages to find every instance, but there were two I can think of last month alone.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:

It depends upon the thread and where it is. If it is a current events conversation, as an example, where users are not playing by the rules despite me posting a note, then yes. Sorry, but I’m not the hallway monitor, and this is not junior high.

I will also say that I am not unreasonable; if a user presents a valid case for reopening the thread, I will do so. However, in the 3 years that I’ve been a mod on this site, I’ve received exactly 4 complaints about a thread I’ve closed. And 3 of those were from users who caused the thread to be closed. OTOH, I’ve received hundreds of PM’s thanking me for closing a thread, some of which saying I waited too long to do so. Sometimes you can’t win for trying.

In any event, Nobody is being forced to read any thread. If a thread is not to your liking, there are thousands more here that may better align with a particular user’s sensibilities.

That has been known to happen.

“this is not junior high”

This particular thread sure makes it feel that way sometimes.

As with any thread on CC, nobody is forced to open it up, read it, participate in it etc.

I like being able to SMH here.
Most times, one really has to dig to figure out what poster someone refers to, IF it’s just one. No, it shouldn’t be posted who, in an obvious way.

Just saying.

To extend my previous analogy, “My coworker doesn’t have to listen while I badmouth them behind their back” really doesn’t excuse the badmouthing.

if anyone has the right to be, its the mods.Just… the mods.

There are many threads posters don’t read for whatever reason… no interest, don’t agree with the conversation, or find them… annoying. But others enjoy/read them. As they say, that’s what makes horse races.

But this is an anonymous forum, mostly folks who’ve never met, never will, certainly don’t work together. And the clear rules don’t allow dissing, say, bodangles, either by name or in some way that points “only” to you.

Several times, some posters have said this thread is “mean.” Imo, not if done right.

I’m far more concerned with misinformation propagated by posters who do not know if it’s accurate.

So… what’s annoying is when this thread gets talked about as … annoying.

I can’t help but feel like that doesn’t matter. Only some of them have been deleted. And even if they get deleted, that’s still yet another user who was hurt by it. It happened. Deleting it or saying it’s not allowed doesn’t do anything to prevent it.

I find posts that are certain that statistics regarding admissions from 5-10 years ago remain accurate predictions of the admissions process today.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
While we’re on the subject of moderator involvement, I’d like to offer the following for this thread:

Please all try to remember that College Confidential is a welcoming community. All users in good standing are free to post on any forum. Non-parents are able to add their opinions here, as parents are welcome to add their opinions on student forums. And the earth will continue to rotate on its axis.

Having said that, the students should be cognizant of the fact that this particular forum exists primarily (although not exclusively) for parents to discuss topics amongst themselves, and would be well served by remembering the target audience when writing comments. The parents themselves should also benefit from remembering the target audience when responding to a student’s question on WAMC or College Search and Selection or similar forums.

Nicely put, ski.

Ones where students complain about grades that teachers " gave" them rather than accepting responsibility for the grades that they earned .

I imagine I already answered this, but I HATE anything with “Urgent” or “Emergency” in the title.

If it’s a true emergency, step away from the computer and call 911. Otherwise, stop the hyperbole.

So true. I feel like just posting, "“A lack of planning on your part doesn’t constitute an emergency on mine.”

Me three. All of those hyperbolic titles are ridiculous and particularly annoying when they don’t give you a clue what the thread is about. Seems like click bait.

But wait…doesn’t “urgent” or “emergency” need to be in caps??
