Threads that OP starts after their original thread doesn’t elicit the advice they really want. (The advice isn’t going to change just because you ask the question in slightly different way)
Students complaining about having only two months of summer vacation.
Students that obviously need professional therapy posting to CC hoping that random people on the internet will solve their problems or looking for enough people will say what they want to hear to make them feel better even though that may create bigger issues in the long run.
I’m sorry, not everyone has the aptitude required for all majors, it’s time to accept that and move on…
I find those threads with C- Algebra grades (or less than desirable science test scores) and ask “should I stay in STEM?” somewhat amusing. And a bit of a bummer at the same time.
@sushiritto The thread I’m thinking of (which may be the same one you are thinking of), the grade ended up being lower than a C- and the course was lower than basic college algebra. I so want the kid to succeed, but desire and reality just aren’t the same thing!
I didn’t follow it all the way through, but I’m just surprised the OP’s in these cases haven’t had a conversation with their GC or a parent, assuming they’re available for counseling. I’d guess that most of the parents that frequent this site know their kids extremely well and can help guide their children towards the best direction.
@sushiritto I wouldn’t assume that the OPs issues are because no one has attempted to support them or access therapy . In order for counseling and therapy to work, one must admit there’s a problem and be willing to work on it.
@carolinamom2boys I might add that the OP also has to have the ability to understand they have a serious problem and have the ability to work on it. I am far from an expert on high functioning Autism/Asperger which OP claims to have but clearly they just don’t ‘get it’ and I’m at a loss at what to suggest at this point the thread is going around in circles and yes I have reported it.
As someone who started out in engineering as a first-gen-in-college student because that’s what everyone told me a “smart kid” does and then promptly flunked out (before landing quite nicely in one of the quantitative social sciences I’d never heard of before my third year of undergrad), it could also be that such a kid has a very supportive support network, but one that lacks the cultural capital with regard to higher education to be able to give good advice.
ETA: Speaking only to the academic side of things, not any emotional issues—but could possibly be something similar in that sphere, as well.
Here are my stats, and they’re all wonderful. But I’m not bragging; I just want to see whether I can get in to the local community college. Oh, did I mention how wonderful my stats are???
Posters who use “quotation marks” when asking about getting “caught” for “cheating” or whether a college will discover that they “failed” to report an :outside “scholarship”.
The close relative to the poster in #3230:
You open a thread titled, “My stats are horrible! What can I do? I need help!” hoping to give some help and comfort to a struggling student only to find the “horrible stats” are a 3.9UW GPA and a 1540 SAT.
It’s all click-bait. And I fall for it every time.
“I made a perfect score on my SAT. Should I take it again?”
Re #3230 and #3232, did you ever see the movie The Purge? For 24 hours people could do whatever they want (steal, murder, etc.) without punishment, then life goes back to normal the next day.
I’d love a 24 hour purge on CC, where I could respond to these types of posts with all the snarkiness in my head, without rebuke from the admins.
Or the ones that sound something like "I am international and need full aid and I want to go to an elite school and I know I will get a 1600/36 when he take the standardized tests. Why are US schools so stingy with internationals?
" this is my thread, so I’m in control if it. I’ll tell you exactly how to reply to it."
“This is my thread and I don’t want to keep hearing the same advice over and over that is contrary to what I want to hear, so I want a moderator to close the thread”.
Which I did. Normally I won’t do just because a user asked. In this case, I felt the thread had run its course. Additionally, I found the use of quotation marks in the title to be annoying.
Ha, we don’t like the “it’s my thread” folks.
Mjrube, I agree about wanting a moratorium day when we can say what we think.
