Those threads where someone tries to tell you that a mediocre commuter research university is better than residential “regional” universities that have much higher incoming freshman stats, retention, and graduation rates just because it happens to offer more degrees and is bigger…and they literally made an account just to tell you how wrong you are. SMH.
There are some students at “mediocre” commuter research universities that really accomplish amazing things. They go to the same medical schools , law schools, and other grad programs as the students at “regional” universities.
Can you blame a family for wanting to save some money on four years of room and board rather than taking on loans to pay for that? There is nothing wrong with graduating debt free. It’s not the college but the students efforts that determine their future. SMH.
I don’t get the say it here thread. People post some vague information, which could be about almost anything. It’s even odder when those vague posts get multiple likes or helpfuls. Maybe, it’s a secret club.
I hate threads where people argue about the value of a liberal arts education while seemingly having no idea what the liberal arts are. Hint: claiming that a degree in biochemistry, math, physics or economics is more valuable than a liberal arts degree is nonsensical because biochemistry, math, physics, and economics are liberal arts.
It is obnoxious when people claim that the way to get into HYPSM is to “be yourself” and “do what you love.” Just be real with these poor teenagers: 95% aren’t going to get into a tippy-top. Embracing your individuality or living your authentic life or whatever isn’t going to help you get there unless you happen to be passionate about something that satisfies their institutional needs. They’re still going to be picky about who they want.
I don’t understand threads like these:
OP: What schools are best for my intended major and/or could I get into with my stats? Let’s say price isn’t a factor.
Response: Do costs matter?
OP: Well, yes. But let’s pretend they don’t.
There are ~3,000 colleges in the US. Many are good for a variety of majors, and there are schools for just about every band of stats. An easy way to narrow what could otherwise be an enormous list is to limit by budget. I think I must be missing something. What good is a list of unaffordable schools?
^^ Welll, that way the OP can come back in 4 or 5 months with a new thread, about how his parents are keeping him from attending his dream school and the unfairness of it all.

I want to go to XXX school because of the mascot.
^Oh, I don’t know about that! I kinda like longhorns…
@MaineLonghorn oh, you know what I mean
Posts where people interrogate the student regarding information they have provided in previous posts.
@paul2752 I want to send my kid to U of Colorado - Boulder, cuz Buffalos. TCU however is out, no to Horned Frogs and because she is not top 7%, DD will never be a Longhorn. :((
Not so annoying really and you have to admit that a mascot can stick in your head and may subconsciously play into a decision.
Threads where the goal(s) of the thread may never be met, because the posters “support” (enable) each other. The time for being serious about that goal is now, today, not tomorrow, next week, next month or next year.
“I got caught cheating, can I still get into Harvard?”
@Conformist1688 It is usually: I got caught “cheating”, can I still get into Harvard?
I got “caught” and my teacher says it’s “cheating”, can I still get into Harvard?
I’m really special and I decided Harvard’s for me.
I programmed something, is that a tip for Stanford?
Rising high school seniors who don’t know how to use Google.
Folks lamenting “Grade Inflation” without stopping to wonder whether their own (or their children’s) grades might be inflated.
