Threads where young students come from advice. But then encounter some harsh comments.
There are nice ways to provide insight, and mean ways to crush a kid. Sometimes it’s over the line and there are nicer ways to steer a kid in the right direction.
I too get annoyed by the answer to a thread asking about where should I apply or help me make a list and the first answer is how much can you afford. Just looked at a thread and literally, first answer given was affordability.
I understand its importance but maybe slide that in after giving an answer to the question. Its almost like certain people can not wait to find that question and pounce on it lol
Considering costs, money should be a top consideration. If a poster is certain the family can afford anything, he can say so. What annoys me is kids/families not doing the right exploring, thinking their stats, some magic ECs, and a great essay are all it takes to make a smooth path. Eg, we still have kids thinking they’ll get OOS aid for the UCs. Or who want suggestions but haven’t run a NPC.
Times when an OP doesn’t “get it,” but claims to be advising a neighbor or friend. It’s ok when someone asks a genuine question. But crazy when they claim to be taking an active advisory role and don’t seem to know squat.
I understand the impulse not to want to lead the OP down a garden path. But, It’s also no fun for the reader to open a thread where no one is posting until the OP comes back with their parents tax returns. Maybe a better way would be to post a decent reply with the proviso “assuming and until you run these colleges’ NPC.”
Btw, the thread I was referring to at #1741 was one where you made several good points.
I just saw that thread; it was hilarious. I call those Newbie Screwbies, as in a forum screw-up so funny it has to be because they’ve never posted anywhere before and have no idea how anything works, but still get in a lather about it.
Someone asks for his chances at Ivies. A new poster with fewer than 50 posts (likely another high school senior) replies. “Wow you have great stats ! You have a great chance at Harvard! Chance me back.”
Ones where the poster immediately begins a new thread asking a similar question when they’re not getting the answer that they want or his present thread has been recently closed. Also ones where they only thank people for assistance when they provide the desired answer they were looking for and dismiss everyone else attempting to assist.
@carolinamom2boys Oh, that does make more sense. Sorry, read it the wrong way. But yes, those threads always confused me – is it necessary to brag about your kid online? I’m thinking of a specific internship thread going on right now.
