Oh, alwaysamom, you betcha.
Ones where HS students give advice regarding underage drinking violations .
^^ was just about to say that
I guess that I could expand that to really include any advice regarding college life given by a current HS student. Where’s their frame of reference .
Threads where the ranking obsessed try to convince others that if they don’t think college rankings and elite schools are everything, they obviously don’t have a clue.
Threads where the ranking obsessed try to convince others that if they went to an elite school, they can’t argue against college rankings.
So tiresome!
Threads where the anti-rankings crowd argue that the rankings are useless because “everybody knows” what the top schools are and all others are poseurs trying to grab attention.
Except those “alarmist” threads about constant catastrophes have multiple pages of responses. So is it the thread that is “most annoying?”
I must not be coming here enough, because I don’t get the references to “alarmist” threads.
@HarvestMoon1 to me, yes. And the folks who seem to post them frequently. I’m not talking about bombs in NYC.
Wait, I misinterpreted, didn’t see you meant is that the thread I find so annoying, about NYC. No. I can see some value in what some of those posters offered, a local view. II think that one affects many of us, one way or another.
Threads where people tell kids how lucky they are to be born poor!
Thread about the Sept ACT had this exchange: Poster X already has a 35 but retook for a 36 so he could get into Stanford. Poster Y says the retake was unnecessary (initially I’m pleased with this reply–but not for long) because with a 33-34, you can get into any Ivy League school, and a 35 will get you in anywhere. Poster X sort of agrees, but worries that his 35 showed academic weakness–compared to the 1600 he had on the SAT.
^wow! Who signs these kids up for retakes? This is on the parents.
Not annoying, but sad - these threads were the poster (always a student) is SO STRESSED. Often the problem is nothing big at all (afraid of perhaps being accused of something) but the poster is SO worried. Ironically, there are other posts by students who have actually done bad things, and are in trouble, and they come off as less stressed than these kids.
I truly feel bad that so many kids feel under so much pressure and stress these days. It obviously isn’t healthy. I want to tell these kids, with the wisdom of having lived so many decades more, that these are small issues and to save their stress for bigger things, but I know that wouldn’t help, so I just sigh and move on. And a day or two later comes the next one…
The thread where the OP’s low income parents saved enough to cover undergrad in their home state if OP spent 2 years at a cc first, which they did, and transferred to an in-state public. Now OP wants to blow the entire fund by transferring OOS to (insert popular urban university known for being extremely frugal with financial aid here) because it’s their dream school and they’re sick of where they live. The college fund won’t cover one year, much less two. OP has used time wisely and been able to save some money, but still needs nearly a year’s COA.
OP’s plan was to cover the gap through grants which haven’t been offered and an RA position that hasn’t been applied for, then ask the low income parents to take a PLUS loan to cover the rest. OP couldn’t understand why that wasn’t a good idea. After all, s/he would be the one repaying the loans after law school. Every time it seemed like OP was willing to accept the necessity of exploring other options, they circled back to this school looking for angles on how they might be able to attend. I hope the parents refuse to go along with it.
Sometimes, just sad.
@austinmshauri That just got worse and worse as I kept reading.
Back to the stress thing - even now, as a freshman, I see how pointless all my worrying was and wish I could explain that to kids who are in the same spots that I was.
Oh, look at the time– must be time for collective jabs at that same gets-under-the-skin poster. What a surprise. Regular as clockwork.
Can a thread be annoying if you never look at it? I am referring to threads about flipping houses, and what kind of wedge to wear, or exercise routines—none of which are related to college. Oh, I am sure such threads are informative and fun and all. But I am already wasting so much time on the college threads, hours a day some days, I have no time for such general threads and am annoyed they pop up in latest posts.
And reading my last post, I have to say the most annoying threads are the ones that I post in, because I have to see my own annoying posts. I just tried to add myself to my ‘ignore list’ and it didn’t work.
