What are things people say about your major that annoys you?

Computer Science

“Oh, can you fix my computer? I can’t get it to turn on.”

Criminology.

“Oh, so you’re going to be a CSI!”

No. No. For the billionth time, no.

Linguistics - “What’s that?”

^Are you serious?

Then again, with the general populace, that doesn’t really surprise me.

The official name of my major is “Residential College in the Arts and Humanities”. It’s only 3 years old and they’re not going to name it quite yet. I’m not sure why, it’s an administrative thing.

Anyway, the annoying comments are abundant:
“Why don’t you get a REAL major?”
“You’re going to starve with that major.”
etc.

The annoying thing is that I already have a job lined up (as a rising 2nd year) that I could take which would earn me more than the average American does -.-
Whatever lol.

Film production Major (Or whatever you want to call it)

“You’re not guaranteed a job, and not everyone makes it in the biz, you know that right?”

“Oh, look at Mr. Spielberg”, “He wants to be a Spielberg” (My dad) or “Wannabe Steven Spielberg”

Energy Economics & Finance:
“Wow!! Getting a job won’t be a problem” or “Oh no!! So much math”

I find that really weird. I was really awful in math during high school, but economics & fin is so much fun and not too stressful. My GPA is pretty darn good too!!

It’s not my major yet but whenever i say to people i want to do international relations I get “What? what are you going to become after that?” or “oohh you get to travel the world?”

It’s unbelievable how people are ignorant about certain things. Irrks me soo much. Also, you’d think that economics is something most people would approve but nooooo. I get a lot of “ew why do you want to do economics, it’s all about money” when these people have no freakin clue what economics is about. Uhhh NO economics is not about money! Economics is really looked down upon where i come from so i really can’t wait to get out of this sh** hole.

accounting

“oh…why don’t you do something exciting instead?”
“Um…you know, you might want to kill yourself if you do that long enough.”

For American Studies:

 • “What’s that? Like…you study America??”
 • “Ohh is that like history? Or English?”

Not a major, but a minor in Asian American Studies:

 • “Why don’t they have White Studies or European Studies?”
 • Me: Umm…it’s called the Department of English and History…

Civil Engineering

“gonna build bridges?”

Not the only thing that civil engineers do…I’m more interested in the environmental/transportation part than structural stuff.

Political Science/Economics double major:

“Oh, so you must be totally power hungry.”

“Economics? You must have no soul/be morally corrupt.”

Easy major.

Poli sci and hsty. Coming from kids who can’t write and complain about reading 600 word articles.

Music Education

“How are you going to find a job?”
“You know, with all the teacher cuts lately, that’s a pretty bad move…”
“Are you aware there is usually only one chorus teacher per school?”

Meh.

I’m not in college so I of course have no major. I just want to know how do you guys reply to these questions? Do you guys sometimes ever think that what others are saying about your major is true?

I’m just curious! :)

Hah, good question^

I’m majoring in Classics

“What’s that?”

It’s Latin and Greek Literature, Ancient history and philosophy, that sort of thing

And then the reply is invariably “Oh, that’s cool, I’d have never thought that existed!” or, much more often "Hah, good luck with finding a job! My/My kid’s major is so much better for x/y/z reasons! What do your parents think? etc etc. " - I have actually gotten that speech from more than one person, and it is incredibly rude.

I also get:

“So, like, English?”

…which more often than not comes after I answer the above question, which is perplexing. People tend to confuse classic literature with classical languages though, so I guess I kind of understand where they’re coming from. This usually necessitates explanation.

“So you want to teach?”
…which comes almost immediately after I say I’m majoring in classics. I would probably feel indignant about this if I didn’t want to be a professor, but usually I explain that classics majors can, in fact, make something of themselves in the world.

Engineering:

"Wow, you must be so smart!!! " w/ faces like 0.o

Really annoying b/c all of my classmates are also struggling like me…sigh

English - “What does that mean? What job can you get with that?”

“Kinesiology”
Oh… is that the study of sneezing?

do people really say that your major X is bad for employment/money making upfront in your face? cause thats incredibly rude
