What are you packing?

Nikara, 2+2=5 or another current student — is property theft a serious problem on campus, particularly for smaller electronics, e.g., ipods, cameras, cell phones etc. Is security box or s similar device necessary/useful? I found this and that, the nice thing is that it has a cable that can be looped around a room fixture (bed, table, pipe) that makes it not entirely trivial to walk out of the room with the whole thing.

Property theft can be an issue, but not usually things stolen from a locked room. The real issue: students tend to leave their laptops/ipods/cell phones alone on tables in the library/ any eating area while they go to the bathroom or do something else. Personally, I’ve never had anything stolen here, but I’ve been careful about always locking my room door when I leave, and I never leave my things unattended- common sense, but many students seem to forget it. While security box-ish things might be nice, I know that I would probably never actually use one- I’m using all of those easily stolen things too much to lock them up.

A friend of mine last year in New/North almost had his MacBook Pro stolen from his room. Yes, it was locked to the bedpost, and the thief (never caught) had tried to pry away the lock from the side of the computer. The aluminum casing was ruined, but it was a deterrent; had the thief spent 30 more seconds he could have gone away with it.

That’s sort of scary! Was his door deadbolted when he left?
