What are your pets' names, and how did they get them?

My Chin (the one in the pic) is Daisy. She was Ella when she came to us but neighbors dog was Bella and the neighbor next to her’s is Ella. I picked Daisy because I think it’s a cute name for a dog.

Our newest is Henry. He was Sami but my niece is a Sam and my great nephew is a Sammy - so we changed it so as not to upset anyone (you’d be surprised how relatives can get upset about dog with name of a family member.) I wanted to name him Bentley but H didn’t like it. Henry was the only name we could agree on. So Henry he is.

15 1/2 yr. old dog who recently died was Bandit. Came with that name and we didn’t change it. Don’t know why because I like people name for dogs.

Our dog that had issues was Lulu. She was Roxie which I really disliked. She just looked like a Lulu and it’s a cute name for dog, imo.

Our first beagle was named Bruce. Middle name Springsteen.

My dog in picture is named Stacy. That was her name when we adopted her. Funny, how it is my D’s dog but she has always been with me. 15 years later my daughter still calls Stacy puppy and pretty dog

First cat (now deceased) was Cosmo, named NOT after the Seinfeld character–this was before that show ever existed–but after the character in Moonstruck. “It’s Cosmo’s moon!” One of our favorite movies.

Dog, a black standard Poodle, is named Loki. Pre-Avengers movies, just after Norse mythology.

New cat is named Squalo. Our sons named him that because we went on a very fun and memorable snorkeling trip in Amalfi and the boat was named Lo Squalo. It means “shark”. The cat looks nothing like a shark, but I think it’s a pretty cool name.

@mamaduck That’s the good thing about cats. They don’t seem to get too attached to their names, or in many cases, even know their names. We’ve had Josie for 3 years and she’s just beginning to get that the “J” sound means her. Mippy is 17, and doesn’t seem to have a clue that he has a name at all lol.

I had a lab called Bonny (her official name from the breeder was ardmargh juniper berry!). We got a kitten and canals him Clyde. Both long gone. Bobby was the most wonderful dog. We’d go on vacation and people were clamoring to take care of her for us.

Current indoor cat is Booboo. Inherited her from our son when he moved back home briefly after a break up. She decided she was mine so when he left she stayed. She is a snuggler which I like, though currently I am persona non grata for some reason. Outdoor cat (bad bathroom manners) is Kiki. My daughter named him when we still thought he was a girl. He is probably the stupidest cat I’ve ever had. Momma picked him up by his head and he nearly died from brain damage (her other kitten died - we found half of him and never knew if she ate him because he died or he died because she ate him). Recently deceased cat was Casper a a play on Casper the (UN)friendly ghost. He was a mean little blighter. Mellowed some as he aged.

Didn’t see ‘Spot’ on list. Doesn’t anyone name their dog Spot anymore?

Ha! I named a dog Rhiannon years ago, after the character in The Mabinogion (Welsh mythology). Within the year that Fleetwood Mac song came out. Annoyed me to no end.

The first dog H and I owned was a GSD named Micah. Our next dog was a golden. His breeders used litter themes, plus their kennel name, and he was from the Road litter, so I named him Mariner Road to the Isles (A favorite Scottish folk song.) His call name was Will. Our next golden came from rescue with the name Sassy, which a) I hated, and b) could not have suited her less, since she was extremely timid. I renamed her Sally. My current golden girl came with the name Maggie, which I kept. I wouldn’t have picked it, but it’s okay. Unfortunately it is similar to Sally so we call her that by mistake sometimes. I always think she must wonder who this Sally dog is.

I had a stray cat I rescued for a while. I always felt that she had a name, I just didn’t know what it was. I called her Miss Kitty, after Gunsmoke.

Our cats’ names are Lillibet and Livia (Lilli and Livi). They told me their names; I didn’t name them. Cats are very particular about their names, you know.

Maddie and Bella (cats) came to us with those names:)

Our new cat is named after Cooper’s Hawk, the winery/restaurant that we frequent. I guess we are just winos.

Our dog is named Kira, after Major Kira Nerise from Star Trek Deep Space 9. You can tell my kids were in middle school when we adopted her. Cutest puppy on any planet!

Ginger. Because she is.

Fluffy. This is more of a Boy Named Sue situation…Fluffy likes to fight.

I had a cat named Booboo once. I took custody of her from a friend, who had dubbed her “Boule de Suif” (Butterball), after the character in the Guy de Maupassant story, even though the kitty was not fat – but then the friend had started calling her Booboo instead.

A different friend suggested that I call the kitty Boobette, which I sometimes did.

My first dog was named Radar after the MASH character. The next one was a Goldie that we named Woody after the Cheers char.

Don’t know why because I like people name for dogs.

We are the same way! However, for cats, we all prefer non-people names.

H and I also tend to think of cats as being females. Our sons think we’re nuts.

Growing up, we had 3 dogs at various times. They were named Driver, Putter, and Bogey. Yup. Dad was a golf nut.

Our first yellow lab was Chloe…just because.

Our second yellow lab was Dolly. We got her shortly after my dad passed away suddenly, her name is an anagram of his (Lloyd).

Our third yellow lab is Ellie (pictured in my avatar). We got her from a breeder in the nearby (sort of) town of Ellington.

Chloe, Dolly, Ellie…H says our next dog’s name has to start with an F. Got any good female dog names that start with “F”???

D1 at age 6 named our dog U.S.A.- the olympics were going on.

We adopted a rescue greyhound when scoutson was little and he wanted to name her after his favorite TV show - Power Rangers, so she was Ranger. We later adopted a cat as company for the dog, who, naturally, was (is) Tonto.

Years ago I had a pure white cat named Flurry - she was too small for Blizzard, too thin for Snowball.
