BO5TON, you are correct. UW is highly selective.

Really? Hm…well maybe I’ll looking into Western Washington, too.

I have a friend who was rejected from UCSD and UCLA out-of-state and in at several superelite schools.

“UDub shouldnt be a safety for anyone.”

Please note that I was not suggesting that UW is a safety. I know little about the selectivity of UW. We do not live in Washington. Another poster made that assumption. (I would think, though that a student in the top 10% of their class, an AP Scholar and National Merit Finalist with various state and national academic awards and SATs over 2300 plus good ECs could reasonably regard UW as a safety. If UW is THAT selective, it’s news to me.)

Our state U would definitely be a safety for my S. But it is not a highly-regarded “flagship state u” with strengths in his areas of interest, unlike, just to cite a few, U Michigan Ann Arbor, U Wisconsin Madison, et al.

UW is not our state school either. Here are there 2006 freshman stats.

Of 5400 students:

The freshman class includes 67 National Merit Finalists and Semifinalists.
84% of the freshman class was in the top 10% of its high school graduating class.
High School GPA (Middle 50%) also known as average GPA of the freshman class: 3.50-3.89

I have no idea how that matches up with other top state schools. I know UW has become increasing selective in the last 10 years or so. Consolation, of course your S will get in most places. UW does attract many top students and have some particular strengths: bioengineering and computer science (lots of Microsoft $) to name a couple.

I’m applying (if I must) to Conn College, Clark U, and GW as safeties.

I’m also applying to USC, Boston College, Emory, Brown, Northwestern and NYU. None of those are safeties, just schools I like.

HOPEFULLY I’ll just get into Yale though :-)
