What Are Your “Stalker Schools” and Have You Caved in To Them?

But the silence now is deafening, no?

Not if your kid’s a junior.

“My son received the emails from Washington University in St. Louis and DID end up applying! Why not? It’s a top school and–something that my son appreciated–did not have a supplemental essay so it was virtually effortless to give himself another good college option! In our case the marketing really worked because I had never really heard of the school before, but the emails got me curious so I looked into it, and saw that it’s actually wonderful!”

tellm3more: Here is “why not” - because WUSTL is very protective of its yield and sensitive to demonstrated interest. It is an excellent school, but they create a very large waitlist of qualified kids who did not visit/check in/demonstrate high interest. Check out the common data set.

My junior year daughter’s greatest “stalker” right now is Vanderbilt. Amazing how she gets something every single week, sometimes twice a week. Lovely school, great programs.

While most of my stalker schools seemed desperate (though, s/o to the U. of Chicago for sending me a nifty t-shirt), I didn’t mind them THAT much. None of the four schools I applied to sent me any advertising materials or swag.

For me…I would have to say Virginia Wesleyan and Randolph College have both been merciless! VW literally extended my application date to March 15th!

I’m getting offers from UNC Wilmington even though I am only half way through Sophmore year

My D thought she was all finished with applications, thought the deadlines had all passed, then she got a VERY nice personalized letter from Pratt Institute asking her to apply and implying that she would qualify for a substantial merit award. So I made her apply. She only applied to 4 schools and one was a toss-off. I really wanted her to have more options. I am very interested to see if she gets in to Pratt now.

We thought about her applying to UMich so she had her ACT score sent there. She is still getting mail from them ,even though I thought their deadline was Feb. 1.

Stalker mail from UChicago does not bother me, maybe it gave me false hope (WL) but I do not see it as anything. The ones I cannot stand are from places I never heard of and would never apply to. Bottom line if I was interested in them the mail was fine, otherwise no. I do think I may have missed one or two important emails in slogging through all the emails from some of these top schools. Also any truth that if Harvard sends you mail they really are interested? Friend got mail and got in

No @SaphireNY. Back when my first kid was applying, I heard a Harvard admissions rep say that he would like a Harvard app to be on the kitchen table of every senior in America.

My friend was the one of only a couple of kids that got Harvard from her school and she got in. A friend with a high ACT score also got a catelogue from Harvard over the summer. I doubt he will get in but who knows. I did not get one and got plenty from other schools

Kettering university and Syracuse. DS is not interested!! Please stop.

Simpson University
Baylor University
Hofstra University
Wheaton College
Memphis
RIT
MIssouri S&T
These are the worst for me, each has “extended” my deadline multiple times

I received constant emails from the following schools:
Carroll College (I must have received 35+ emails. Insane.)
UChicago
RIT
Loyola Chicago
Creighton
Fordham
Tulane

Drexel
Rensselaer Polytechnic
Hofstra

…And I didn’t apply to any of them.

My oldest son is a junior and gets daily mail from some great schools, many of 123wombat’s list above. My daughter is a sophomore and in the last week we’ve received four different recorded voice mails, one personal call and two mailings from Liberty University. If you knew this girl and this family you would know how completely off target they are.

Cal Lutheran University
Columbia
Azusa Pacific (caved)
Carnegie Mellon
University of Pacific
Johnson and Wales
RIT
UCR (caved still waiting for the decision though)
Pratt Institute
Houghton College
Babson College

So many colleges. I got tired of them . Just unsubscribed from email and mailing lists.

Oh, god, I couldn’t remember them all. These are some of the worst offenders, who have sent me dozens of emails.

Stevenson (they actually sent me a paper application twice, as well as other letters and emails)
Cedar Crest
Florida Polytechnic
Virginia Wesleyan
Tulane
Fordham
Chestnut Hill College
Randolph College
Quinnipiac (or however it’s spelled, I don’t remember)
St. Bonaventure
St. Johns University
St. Johns College
HULT International Business School

To name a few. I’ve been getting letters since the beginning of my sophomore year. Senior year now, fingers crossed so we will see where I end up. I didn’t cave to any of these, though I did cave to admissions stress by applying to a state flagship I didn’t really want to apply to and definitely won’t be going to.

@crooly Stetson and St. John’s university were also major stalkers for me. And the worst part is they never reply any of my email!

University of Pennsylvania

Columbia University is my ‘stalker school’ lol and yes it’s certainly working
