What Clothes To Bring To The South (from a northerner haha)

Female=depends on school.

I had one daughter go to school in VA the other goes to school in NC.
Both of them wear a lot of lightweight sun dresses at the beginning of the school year and casual skirts and tee shirts. J Crew khaki shorts. It is very hot at both of their schools at the beginning and end of the year and they prefer cotton skirts and dresses.

Shoes are flip flops, Jack Rogers, Tory Burch for both of them. The one in NC
bought a pair of Sperrys when she started school because they wear them at her school, but really didnt like them.

I’m just curious – does it raise any eyebrows if a student doesn’t dress as described above? (Ie, wears cargo shorts and a t-shirt)

my S is a non frat guy at USC.He wears khaki shorts, but they are cargos. He wears flip flops, and also the Birks he’s been wearing for years. He hasn’t bought those thingies guys let their sunglasses dangle on…croakies??.He wears regular tee shirts, collared polos, button down shirts.Wears his jeans.he loves to call me in January and tell me he’s wearing shorts.
He needs to dress up sometimes and gets away with a navy blazer, oxford shirt and khaki pants there in places he would need a regular suit for here in NY.No ties, usually.
He didnt buy a pink button down shirt until this past spring, but they are common on guys, as are pink and brightly colored polo shirts. In fact, when we first visited, we saw guys wearing outfits we would only see here on the golf course.

He hasnt had to wear anything heavier than a fleece in three years. But his southern buddies feel the cold much more than him.
Last year, they cancelled classes for a “blizzard” he was hysterical with laughter…there was a coating on the trees.bushes,etc.Nothing on the ground at all…

I agree with the suggestion of taking one “dress casual” outfit. We sent D to NOLA with casual outfits and she ended up buying several semi-formal outfits for parties.

I wouldn’t say it does. And t-shirts are fine… I wear tshirts all the time. One thing I don’t do specifically is wear athletic shorts if I’m going out with my friends for the night or something. As far as jackets go, a North Face/equivalent fleece is really all you’ll need.

I’m not saying these clothes are required by any means, or that every person you’ll find is dressed like this. Simply answering what types of clothes people wear here, and this is a pretty big “style”.

For girls, lots and lots of sundresses… a curious phenomenon I’ve noticed at UVa is the practice of wearing sundresses with cowboy boots. Don’t really understand it, but people do it. In cooler weather, you tend to see skinny jeans, pashminas, boots (Uggs or cute leather ones - think Frye or the like) and a nice bag.

My S’s, both born and bred southern boys attending big state u’s, wear non-cargo khaki or army green color shorts. S1 does have a couple pair of subtle plaid ones this year.
They wear a variety of t-shirts mostly school t-shirts or ones from restaurants/bars or surfer brands. They wear Rainbow flipflops until it’s too cold.

Neither like Topsiders. Dressing for a football game includes above mentioned shorts/flipflops plus official tailgater t-shirts in warm weather and jeans/hoodies in colder weather.

At their schools the guys wearing the pastel shorts w/ oxford button downs and Topsiders are generally in a fraternity.

Sperrys and polos are pretty much the uniform down here.

What about using an umbrella versus wearing a raincoat?

Around here, high school kids often refuse to use either and just get wet, but perhaps students who have to walk everywhere have different habits.

Don’t wear flip-flops unless you’re off to the beach.

^^^^^^^^^^^

What??? Why??? Everybody around here lives in flip-flops, weather permitting of course.

Same here GA2012MOM,flip-flops everywhere…girls and boys. Between my two S’s, they’ve prob. had 6 or 7 pairs of Rainbows. They wear them with jeans until it’s too cold.
