What color/pattern tie for job interview?

When I used to wear 'em, I’d get them from Tie City (six for a buck). You can get perfectly fine small-print silk business ties at Costco.

If you are looking for a real special tie order one from Southern Proper Gents Collection they are $68 and have been all the rage of tie collectors for the past few seasons.

If you are looking for a nice rep stripe (the most popular non critter tie) the best this season are definitely from Kiel James Patrick who just debuted his collection this last month. I have his green and blue as well as the blue and white stripe and find they go great with a dark blue suit and white shirt. $85

If you are going for cheap outlets like TJ Maxx, Stein Mart, and Burlington Coat Factory all are carrying previous years Nautica Ties and they can be had for right around $20. They are an absolute steal at that price.

I read an article recently that I could not find that the colors of green and blue, or red and blue; were considered to be the best tie colors for politicians as they are appealing to a larger demographic. I honestly do not know of the accuracy of the article and it was not from a scholarly publication by any means (i actually dont remember which magazine I was reading it in)

P.S. Don’t wear a bow tie.

Sorry, BowTieFratty. I wear bow ties myself, sometimes, but I wouldn’t wear one to an interview.

Thanks for the reminder about TJ Maxx, etc. I never think to go there, but we have one right by my house. Ds2 has always been a tie lover and is itching for some new ones. He thinks his dad’s are all outdated. We prefer to think of them as classics.

Ds1 has a friend who wears bow ties. His senior ad featured him in one as a 3yo and in one for his senior pic.

Nordstrom Rack is an excellent source of fine Italian-made ties at reasonable prices.

Lawyers may wear bow ties–after they make partner.

Re post #19, they are all acceptable, but I’d prefer either of the red ones with a navy suit and white shirt.

Years ago, Ferragamo had some gorgeous printed silk ties in a style that was reminiscent of Moghul miniature painting. I got a couple for my husband. Although they had animals, which some here say is verboten, they screamed quality and would certainly be completely appropriate. The trick is to distinguish good animals from bad. Ferragamo is unlikely to produce anything in poor taste, but when you go down the food chain, things get dicier, so it’s usually safer for a young man to stick to the small patterns and stripes.

BTW, I agree with no solids. I personally tend to prefer printed silk to woven, but that’s just a personal preference.

My H wears bow ties upon occasion, and used to do so more frequently. He just recently started wearing suspenders again, too. This week he went to work in a classic blue striped seersucker suit with suspenders. I love that look, but then he has the height and figure to carry it off. All he needed was the straw boater, but he doesn’t own one. :)

To be a real tie connoisseur, don’t forget to obsess about your knot - google to find different types and how to tie them.

My favorite is the half Windsor, but you need to take the shape of your face into consideration.

To those who watch Colbert and Daily Show, Stewart usually wears a traditional knot, and Colbert a half or full Windsor.

No Costco, or Nordstrom Rack where I am…
Another question if I may - most of the ties on various websites indicate differing lengths, my son is not very tall (5’ 7" or so), should I be looking for a particular length as well? Also looking for help re: cost vs. quality for those of you “in the know”.

Standard length tie would be fine for someone who is 5’7". My 6’4" son needs a longer tie, as his height in all in the torso.

I do not buy expensive ties for DH, as he is prone to sharing his lunch with them. He does pick some ties up when he is overseas for work. We have found nice ties at Kohl’s on sale for my guys. Silk, $20 or under, noone is going to get freaked if it gets stained, permanently borrowed or lost at college.

A “power tie” is good for interviews and big meetings, but if you have to wear ties daily, don’t blow the budget.
I have never seen ties at our local Costco! Will have to look more closely.

Don’t let Speaker John Boehner pick out your ties unless you’re going to an Easter egg hunt. [Slideshow: Why Does John Boehner Wear Such Flashy Ties? The New Republic](http://www.tnr.com/slideshow/92709/john-boehner-ties-congress)

I have looked through all the links for ties and think the David Donahue is by far the best.
I really like that little hint of blue in the red tie and think it is sophisticated pattern. The southern tie collection and repp ties are just too collegiate and sort of make you seem like a clone. Also have known way too many engineer types who hate ties and think those joke ties are so clever.

Our Costco had ties before the holidays but I think they were moved out on sale at the first of the year.

A tidy clone look is what most suit-wearing companies want–at least at the start. When you are somebody you can wear what you want.

^agree completely. Wear a smaller less expensive version of whatever the partners are wearing. Most law firms have photos of the partners on their website – head shots, with ties in full view. Good luck! Sounds exciting!

I meant a fratty college guy clone not a lawyer/ businessman clone :)

Husband is a partner in an AMLAW 100 firm and use to be on the hiring committee. If you look at most of the "power players: on business channels or see pictures of attorneys in court, I would suggest the lighter, shade of blue tie with a foulard print or stripe. rfirst and second year clerks I have seen also have worn Vineyard Vines more conservative ties. Here are 2 suggestions:

Definitely white shirt without button-down collar. Good luck on your interviews!

It has been Proven through research (idk who conducts these or why but I have seen them) that red is a color of power, confidence and control. The bolder the red, the stronger these emotions cone across. Red has some sort of psychological effect on the people looking at it so I suggest a not so bold red as a tie because you don’t want it to be too much ( like someone else said TJmaxx is good as well sears, JCPenney and Macy’s)

It’s a Brooks Brother tie. It’s a rep tie similar to what georgiaTwins suggested. Rep tie is conservative and will not offend anyone. One can be flashy and with a bit of fashion when one has made it. Unless your son is interviewing as a senior associate or partner I would try not make a fashion statement.

Many years ago when I worked for a white shoe IB firm, we were told specifically not to wear Hermes ties or scarves when visiting clients, rep ties were the best.

Wow, never knew ties ran into so much money for so little fabric! Am glad S only had us buy him two–one for graduation from HS with the rest of his class & one for Christmas when he was starting to go to career fairs & interviews. Last year when he was cleaning out the storage room, he came across a trove of ties that my dad no longer uses or wears (he has dozens more than he has ever needed–only wears for court and very special occasions). S was able to choose among those & ended up with a very nice selection of classics, including quite a few designer ones. :)

Please let us know what you finally decide; never realized how much agonizing went into the selection (more than we put into helping S choose one, that’s for sure). Maybe engineering doesn’t care as much?
