Hey, I am a highschool sophomore at a local magnet school (RVGS) for math and science and am trying to go to school for either Political Science, philosophy, or Physics. Took Honors English and World, RVGS Physics 1 and Algebra II, and Spanish II last year. Planning on AP Euro and Seminar, RVGS Chemistry and Pre-Calc, and Honors English and Spanish this year. Any suggestions of other classes I should take or better APs for next year, please let me know!
How about an arts course of some sort.
Anything that your high school requires for a high school diploma.
In general you want to take four years of Math, English, Science, Social Studies, and Foreign Language as well as any other courses needed to graduate HS. Colleges are not looking for students to specialize in HS. Of course, electives can be of your choosing.
If you are looking towards competitive colleges, take the most rigorous courseload you can comfortably manage. Work with your teachers and guidance counselor to create a program that makes sense for you.
You have all the basics covered. Take something fun or interesting to you - ceramics, theatre, graphic design, choir, painting, psychology, journalism, art history?
Thank you for your responses. I want to go to Stanford or UPenn. I want to take journalism but can’t fit it into my schedule. I have considered taking AP Art History. I love history and am extremely excited to take AP Euro.
It is great to think ahead…but as some unsolicited advice I’d caution against setting up any “dream schools”…especially ones with under 10% acceptance rates.
It’s nice to have these very high reach schools as goals. At this point, your main goal should be to finish high school strongly so that your college options will be more attainable. Please consider taking time to research colleges that are less competitive than these two.
I still say…take an arts class or some elective that interests you.
Please make sure you hit the core classes (English, lab science, math, social science, foreign language). Some schools want an arts or tech class. Courses like Journalism can wait if you can’t find room in the schedule.
Best of luck
