Now, this is a bit dated… and Kings Point may have set the admissions bar higher since my son got in… but it might give some hope to those that dont have the greatest grades or SAT/ACT scores but have the DRIVE to succeed…

My sons had a 2.75 HS GPA (weighted). His SAT scores were 600 Math, 650 Verbal. His high school was highly competitive and did not rank its students. He took no AP classes and no advanced math or science courses. His CFA scores were good, but not impressive (I dont remember his scores exactly) He was a two year varsity letterman in cross country and team captain his senior year. The team finished third place in the region and just missed going to the (California) state meet. He wasnt one of the better members of the team and his times were unremarkable.

In his first attempt at gaining admission with the class of 2004 he was an alternate, but didnt get in. He got a job… He enrolled at a JC and took an introductory to Physics course, an English course and tennis… and thats it !!! He applied again the next year and was accepted for admission about two weeks before his class was to report… Go figure. Maybe they gave him points for persistence when he reapplied… Maybe they just took a chance on him… Who knows.

He struggled his first year… He finishing plebe year with a 2.28 GPA, failing Calculus which he retook and passed during the summer. He told me that NOTHING in his previous experience prepared him for the pace and intensity of the math and science courses at the academy.

He had to WORK and STUDY harder than he ever had before and it paid off. He ended up passing his license exam the first time and graduating in four years with a 2.52 GPA and a BS degree in Marine Transportation. And thats something only 65% of the original 283 members of his class did.
