What do you buy at Costco?

I’ve heard of people using the lobster bisque as a pasta sauce.

Well that might be a good idea (the pasta idea) cause it was quite thick - it would still be really rich in my opinion…

has anyone mentioned the Ghiradelli Brownie mix? Although it comes in a big box, it actually has smaller packages inside so you can make smaller portions if you want.

We’re way past needing them at my house, but I have friends who buy diapers and formula at Costco and save a lot of money.

While I am thrilled that Costco came to Madison (actually Middleton) it doesn’t match those in Northern Virginia especially the one at Pentagon City.

My family (5) buys a ton of stuff there
detergent (best deal), batteries, frozen food, cleaning supplies, toliet paper, paper towels, fish, half&half, ink, paper, etc etc. Basically, we buy anything that we know won’t go bad super quick (or at all, like TP and stuff) or that we will eat nearly immediately and can eat that much (steak, fish, cheese, etc). Their fruit/veggies are also a good deal (cherries, oranges, asparagus, salads). Also, they offer discounted (heavily!) gift cards to iTunes, Godiva, spas, and more, and they offer discounted movie tickets. They also tend to “bundle” things together to get more bang for you buck, like a new coffee machine I got: it came with a ton of extra K-cups essentially for free.
Technology items are often priced far better there, but there’s less selection. Anything from TVs and DVD players to iPods and memory cards are much cheaper than Best Buy and places like that.
I buy stuff for college (huge box of soups, Velvetta, snacks, etc) and take stuff from home that is a majority from there. I only have a Sams Club down here.
If you have a medium family, or just like to buy in bulk, I think it’s totally worth it. We pretty much swear by it, although we definitely do not buy everything from there (we don’t treat it as a grocery store and get goods from other places too)

Another pro: they’ll take back anything, no questions asked. My mom had not one, but two sets of outdoor lights break (months after we had gotten them) and she simply took them back and got a refund. No questions asked, just keep the receipts!!

teriwitt, yes, best brownie mix on the planet!

I haven’t run through the last pages, but has anyone mentioned the optical dept? H dropped his wire-rimmed glasses today and the miniscule screw that holds the frame around the lens popped out. He couldn’t see to put it back in without the glasses. I, however can see the hairs on a gnat’s leg if I take my contacts out (just don’t ask me to see beyond 11"), so I tried. I didn’t have enough hands to hold it together and line up the frame, so we took them to Costco (where he got them). Smiling young optical person didn’t even ask where he got them or who he was… used precision tools to repair. Told him the silicone nose-pads were “gross” and replaces those, too. Cleaned the glasses and fixed the bent ear-piece. No charge.
Their tire policy is just as friendly and for those of us who hate to haggle with car dealers, their auto purchase plan gives you essentially fleet rates on a new car. (OK, so most of us can’t buy a new car this year and you might get a great deal on the lot if you can, but in normal times it saves lots of money)

I just watched Oprah’s show on longevity and new technologies helping people live longer. She had an 89 yr old guy on her show who looked like he was 70. He wants to live to be 125 years old, exercises every day, eats a lot of veggies and fruit, and shops for his produce at Costco. His shopping cart looks just like our cart: peppers, oranges, shrimp, spinach, berries… If only H could get his butt off the couch…

I loved it when he ‘slipped’ on camera and spoke of the beneficial qualities of plums.

And that 89 year old Costco shopper is a billionaire!

No wonder he is a billionaire - he saves a bundle on his food by shopping smart ;)!

Interesting story!
Do your Costco locations offer organic veggies and fruit? Mine does not and I’m a bit picky about certain items that I have read absorb high levels of pesticides - like strawberries and peppers.
And I still have problem with bags of spinach leaves - even though I love them - can’t get it out of my head…

The list of items that we buy at Costco keeps getting longer. Some items are much better than Restaurant quality. I love the store!

The Naked Orange Juice – the best. All the boring household staples for cleaning, toilet paper, paper towels, etc. The roasted chicken of course. Produce. Bread. Last time I bought butter thinking it would be a lot of regular sized butter sticks in a huge box. Instead each stick is one-pound in size and my family has been ribbing me for weeks.

The Costcos here in L.A. (as someone pointed out) can have lines that take 20 minutes or longer depending on the time of day and year. Also, the aisles in certain sections are like our freeways – so jammed it’s hard to move. I went to a Costco in Connecticut once and just could not get over how empty it was and how there was no line either to check out or to buy a hot dog. I would pop in all the time if I could have that kind of experience.

cleaning products, lots of meat, they have really good chicken sausage, flank steaks and the salmon is great. I just separate into freezer bags. our costco has a seafood department as well with great prices on shrimp and clams.

That’s 'cause everyone in Connecticut is so rich, they don’t need to shop at Costco. ;)

I am in love with the sundried tomatoes in oil and the fresh little sweet peppers in the produce section. They have a terrific meat department, and their produce is top notch.

I don’t buy paper goods there. I don’t have enough storage space.

I have to psych myself up to go to Costco. The lines ARE terrible in SoCal.

.

They carry both kinds: the packages with four sticks in one pound, and the one pound stick.

Just got back - Rose Fertilizer… they have the Bayer all in one systemic fertilizer/fungicide/insecticide at a great price.

[Bayer Advanced All-In-One Rose & Flower Care](<a href=“Science-Based Lawn & Garden Care | Bioadvanced”>Science-Based Lawn & Garden Care | Bioadvanced)

As I have a huge rose garden, I use a lot of this stuff - and Costco is definitely the best value.
