There are plenty of words “in common parlance” but they have varying connotations and implications. This is very worth discussing. Doesn’t have to be stopped because Someone suggests so.
I despise, detest, loathe, dislike, abhor, you name it how this thread is turning into a discussion of how a single word is definite and whether it should be used or not. You could say the same thing for overuse of the word “love” as well and I agree it is common parlance. To each their own. Let’s move on…

MODERATOR’S NOTE
FYI, I deleted the above comment, as well as the 11 comments regarding “hate” that were basically a debate between 2 users. Side conversations should be handled via PM, and debate has no place on this thread.
I hate it when you do that
^^Lol, @jym626 FTW.
I hate peas.
really, who loves peas?
Not that everybody “loves” it, but it is all-too common: I cannot stand the use of the words “gay” and “retarded” to mean nonsensical.
@MotherOfDragons My daughter
Raw english peas are fabulous!
Exactly, skieurope. Just because a word has been used “generically” does not mean it is reasonable or appropriate. Thanks for the excellent examples.
On the bright side, those two words have fallen very strongly out of favor, the first in that context and the second in any context.
I like fresh peas with butter on them.
scallions sautéed crispy pancetta and peas and a tablespoon of chopped fresh mint at the end.
Simply amazing
And who would think is what I thought
I hate peas.
I strongly dislike peas
Or really, anything that pops.
Peas
Blueberries
Cherry tomatoes
Cut them up though, put them in a salad bake them etc and I’m ok.
Slimy foods. Same thing
Mango
Avocado
Etc
Chutney, guacamole, smoothies
All good
Blackberries.
They’re never sweet.
It’s funny – there are really no foods that I even dislike, much less hate. I am surprised by the animus directed at food here.
I tend not to like most sitcoms, even the really popular ones, with a few exceptions.
I hate reality TV shows. Pretty much all of them.
I have never actually walked out on a movie, but there are some well-regarded movies where I came very close: Dressed To Kill, Les Miz (Wow! Did I ever hate that! Not just the film, either. The lyrics may be OK in the original German, but whoever translated them into English has no poetic ability whatsoever.), The Lion King (an apology for fascism), My Dinner With Andre (I have tried multiple times to watch it without falling asleep, and never succeeded), Wings of Desire, anything Milos Foreman directed in English.
And the one movie I have despised above all others: The Princess Diaries. It took a perfectly decent, B+ young adult novel and turned it into misogynistic dreck. I could imagine the production meetings with some Disney executive bellowing, “Dumber! We need to make it dumber!” I wouldn’t imagine I could hate a movie with Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway, but I do. (Re Julie Andrews – I never got the movie “10” either, because I couldn’t fathom how anyone would choose Bo Derek over Julie Andrews, even if the latter were somewhat past her sell-by date.)
ABBA. I have never gotten why anyone likes ABBA. Hence, also, Mamma Mia.
Andrew Lloyd Weber.
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros.
Sondheim musicals. (Hate is too strong, I guess, but I don’t get why people think he’s so great. Some of his earlier work is good.)
@JHS said:
Wasn’t the musical written in French originally? And inspired by a French novel?
Just curious why you would go see the film when you already hated the live performance.
I HATED Les Miserables. HATED HATED HATED. No way I was going to sit through the film.
Key and Peele did a funny parody on Les Mis
